For some reason, I thought Russian authors were hard to read. Not so in this case. This is a surprisingly easy-to-read novella.

A young man, first-person narrator of the story, released from prison, looking for work, eventually finds it in a village in the Russian province. There he lives as a tenant in the small house of Matrjona Vasilievna. The story deals with the two of them living together, about Matrjona's burdensome life and finally a tragedy. By the way, the story takes place starting in the summer of 1953, after Stalin, just barely though.

Matrjona is, I think, a very well worked out character. The author puts people at the forefront. He obviously made the conscious decision not to overload the story with symbolism and remains simple. The reader will get the meaning anyway. Maybe it's a little close to cliché sometimes, but that's nothing I would complain about. After all there must be a reason why a cliché becomes a cliché.

In any case I enjoyed this story very much. For me it was the perfect introduction to the works of the author.

PS: I read the book in a Russian/German edition. Unfortunately I don't speak Russian. Therefore please consider the following (automatic) translation of my review into Russian a bold experiment and probably utter nonsense

По некоторым причинам я думал, что российских авторов было трудно читать. Не так в этом случае. Это удивительно легкий для чтения.

Молодой человек, первого лица рассказчик истории, освобожден из тюрьмы, ищет работу и в конечном итоге находит их в деревне в российской провинции. Там он живет как арендатор в крошечный двор Матрена Васильевна. История-это трагедия, как два вместе живут от тяжелой жизни Матрена и наконец. Он играет кстати в период с лета 1953 года, после Сталина, хотя еле-еле.

Это Матрена-один, я думаю, очень хорошая, комплексный характер. Автор ставит человека на переднем плане. Видимо, он намеренно обходится с тяжелым символизм но остается легко. Читатель тоже имеет значение. Может быть иногда немного близко к клише, но я ничего не приостановить найти его на самом деле. Ведь там должна быть также причина так клише клише.

Эта поправка во всяком случае, очень понравилось. Для меня это было идеальное введение в работах этого автора.
