** spoiler alert **
Dull & plodding; at p 75 I'm starting to skim. Do not appreciate the author's license with the reputation of March, implying him to be an adulterous unitarian (which she admits in her post-discussion is a fantasy). Do not see how this book ever won an award. The other 2 novels were so much better!!! I just reviewed the endnotes which say that the 2d half switches to Marmee's voice; I may or may not stick around for that.....
A little better now; at least he's doing something useful by running a school to teach the freed slaves.
Still don't see how this won an award; it's dark, & I've never endured such whiny characters!!! The wife is as whiny as the protagonist!
As it plays out, the true hero(ine) is Grace, the former slave. The best part of the book may just be the little poem on p.265.
