it was amazing
Read 2 times. Last read June 12, 2016 to June 18, 2016.

So I cheated on my local library last week. I don't think she knows yet, and I feel kind of bad about it. I discovered a smaller library that was actually much closer to my house. She definitely caught my attention, but I never went because it just seemed like the selection was going to be much smaller, and my current library and I have a great thing going right now.

But now I'm involved with two libraries and, boy, is my life going great!

I found this book at the new library where I couldn't find anything else that jumped out to me. I mean, the fiction section is like three rows, maybe four. That includes every genre of fiction. No mystery, romance, horror... it's all fiction.

This is the book I left with last week, and this is now my favorite Stephen King book. This is King at the top of his game. It's the perfect length with all six parts, it ends well, and he doesn't rely on horror or too much salty language to tell a fantastic story.

I've always said King is the best when he stays under 400 pages or so and doesn't write about vampires or monsters. He dabbles in the supernatural here, but not for the sake of scaring the reader. He just really, really hit a home run with this thing.

I liked having six separate parts combined into one novel. Each new section felt fresh with a new plot element, and King helps reset the scene from where he left off before. The characters are all well developed and none of them are too outlandish or over-the-top. Even the antagonist. That was great.

I have a solid love/hate relationship with Mr. King, but I loved this one. Seriously, this is my favorite book I've read from him. Go read it if you haven't already. And watch the movie because it's a classic on its own.

And, thank you Stephen King for a beautiful first date with my local library. I hope our future encounters are this incredible.

James Joyce Johnny wrote: "What an idiotic response. I'd expect this from a middle schooler, not a middle-aged man."

I spy, with my little eye, something ironic.

Sandie Imagine the kind of life you must have to portray such anger about a relatively small event. I am always fascinated by the people that start these attacks .....

I agree with this; it seems that it must be a very small and lonely life and there is great pity in that.

Dawn Michelle Justin wrote: "Thanks, Dawn Michelle... but middle aged???? 😃"

Well, I was recently informed that 50 is ancient so if I am ancient, you MUST be middle aged. ;-)

Justin Ancient? I think 50 is the new middle aged. I can barely cling to the millennial generation... or say I’m not part of it... just depends.

Well, to be fair the assessment was from a 6 year old who already thinks I am a "really BIG number" in regards to age, so there is that. LOL
I personally think that we should do away with words like "middle-aged". Its just such a MEH title.

Justin I agree. Needs some more UMPH or whatever. Anyway, I learned how to block people today. So that was cool.

I totally love that feature. :-)

Zach Justin not to be picky but you said that you cheated on your local library. If you found one way closer to your house would that small library not be your local library? Just messing with you but I have to admit as many books as I have read I have never read a SK novel.

Justin Hey Zach... great question! I actually live right on the edge of my town, and the library for the next city over is much closer. At first, I didn’t think I could get a library card there since I didn’t live in that city... even though it was closer. But, now, I am a proud card carrying member of two libraries... one smaller and closer, and one bigger and further away, but both “local in a sense.

Julia Elizabeth I could not agree more. I, too, have a love / hate relationship with Stephen King, but this is King at his best. The writing and dialogue is vastly superior to his other works, and the story itself is unique and engrossing. He really hit it out of the park with this one.

Kristy I saw the movie before I read the book(s) and I have to say...this is one of the rare times where the movie is as good, if not better than the book!

Justin Absolutely agree. The other example I can think of is Shawshank Redemption. One of my favorite movies of all time.

Kristy Justin, you are right! Anytime Frank Darabont adapts King's work, it's amazing!

frances collins i like stephen king books its interesting to me alot and im going to read one of his books right now

frances collins this my first time giving stephen king 5 stars to

Susiie Gm LOL to the beginning of this review!

Rich I luv the movie, one of my favourites, so I might jus read the book, I’m not into supernatural stuff but the parts in the movie were ok, never dragging on throughout the whole movie

Nicole Power Nice review! I have a love/love relationship with King books generally, but this one does shine a little brighter and is truly amazing. This story is one of my leading arguments when someone says King is just a horror writer.

I also enjoyed the way the parts were split; I have the 6 smaller serials and really liked that format. And boy, part 6 did make me leak a tear.

I would say The Green Mile is the best movie based off a King story as well, though Stand by Me is close behind!

Justin Thanks! Shawshank will always be my favorite movie adaptation, but this one is right up there, too!

Roger Fernandez A while ago I ordered this book through book of the month club, loved the book, then the movie was made, it's good to see the movie and see what you read on the screen & connect moments of the movie to the book!!! Awesome book, and the movies adaptation to his books are just amazing.

Justin Sometimes they are amazing (like this one, Shawshank, even The Shining), but there are some really bad adaptations out there, too.

Tek Its been close to next on my shelf for a while. Ive been kind of putting it off because I know the story via the movie.

message 74: by Tayo (new) - added it

Tayo Reads Is the book anything like the movie or better?

Justin If you like the movie, you should definitely read this. I think they are both equally great!

message 76: by Tayo (new) - added it

Tayo Reads Thank you Justin I really like the movie. I appreciate your feedback thank you for reaching out to me this will actually be my first Stephen King read I've always watched his movies but I've never actually read a physical book

message 77: by Lisa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa Lantrip This is 2nd only to 11/22/63 for me, as far as King. I love this one. i read it close to 20 years ago, so I think it's time for a reread.

Justin Tayo, this is a great place to start with King. It has much less of a horror slant to it and is just written really well compared to some of his others, in my opinion. Hope you enjoy it!

Justin Lisa, that is another great one. It was really long, but it never felt that way since the story was so captivating.

´³´Ç²õé Diogo Is it an easy read in english for a non native speaker? I read books in english like George Orwell's 1984, will this be more difficult?

Stephen King's a great writer, but not a complicated one. I think he should be a good choice, for you. If you can read Orwell, you should have no trouble with King.

´³´Ç²õé Diogo Thank you a lot, I will give it a shot!

You're welcome. Enjoy.

Teresa I love that the comments are still going on this review nearly 5 years down the line. I've just finished the book and admit it made me cry. So glad the film didn't defer too much from the book. I've not read many SK books but have different seasons and the stand in my collection to read so hoping they won't disappoint.

Justin Both of those books are solid. You shouldn’t be disappointed. He is hit or miss, but you’re off to a great start!
