Boring, dull, lifeless, and flat. This is so drawn out and boring I kept having to remind myself what the plot was.
Best to get someone else to sum up the story rather than undergo the torture of reading it.

Rocky See i think dicken was little like that there is no doubt that he was a great writer. He started the story with lots of energy and enthusiasm but coming towards the end he felt like readers are not worth it sort of feeling and he wrapped up like that

So i do not complain you are feeling this way but it does not mean that dickens was any less writer than any of his time and beyond

Jason Kennedy Possibly the most stupid comment I have ever read on this site.

JM Will never get people crapping on this book. This was one of the most beautiful books I'd read. The words, the characters, their dynamic, their interactions what got to me.

Also, saying "I did not like the book" is different from saying "This book is crap."

You'll never be respected by brazenly shitting on the good books because YOU didn't like them.

Patrick Martin I find that you have to take your time getting into Dickens sometimes. He weaves very intricate plots so he takes his time setting them up. I have to say that it is hard with not to see the plot twists coming from a mile away. Dickens twists are really quite incredible and you don't see them coming at all. But when you look back you can see that he set it all up

Patrick Martin Obviously YA and classics can be enjoyed by the same person but you have to admit that they are very different beasts. And I can imagine that if you were used to reading YA a lot of classics would be hard to approach. I have never really gotten in YA (and I have tried) and I just find that most of the time I don't enjoy them. And I'm in my 20s so I'm not an old snob if that what you thinking.

Laarniebpocot I'm not a fan of Dickens, although I admit that I enjoyed A Tale of Two Cities. This book, however, I don't know why I wasted my time with this. Aside from the plot being boring, that Pip guy protagonist is the most annoying character in all of Dickens' books I've read. He seems to notice all of the useless details of the people around him. I would rather sit next to Uriah Heap than this Pip guy. Ugh.

Seth This book was absolute torture and truly, truly does suck.

message 58: by Evi (new) - rated it 1 star

Evi Completely agree. The story was way longer than it needed to be and there was absolutely no character development till the last few chapters.

message 59: by Huck (new) - rated it 5 stars

Huck Flynn Sad, the need to rate a literary classic as 1 star because you claim it bores you. You don't qualify or explain that statement in any useful way and it possibly says more about you than it does about the book? "This book bores me - it must be the books fault". I'd be interested to learn which books rate highly with you - it might give us some idea of your great expectations of literature.

Evi To Huck Flynn, you sound like one of those people who hate on anyone who doesn't like old books just because they are considered classic. If you want specifics on what I and probably others didn't like about this book, I'd be more than happy to explain. For starters the main protagonist Pip is constantly complaining about his life and has absolutely no character development till the end of the book and by then it's too late for it to do the story any favors. He treats every person who is good to him like crap. He chases after the same girl no matter how bitchy she is and how non existent his chances with her are. Overall Pip not someone I rooted for and is the main problem I have with this book. He spends way too much of the book focusing on the woes of Pip and how sorry we should feel for him. The book as a whole dragged on far to long with unnecessary details and useless dialogue.
I will give credit to all of Dickens other characters though. Miss Havisham, Provis, and Estelle are the only reason I was able to finish this book. The complexity of these characters are what make a story great and that was just something that was lacking in Pip. The storyline did have promise but just fell flat. Charles Dickens is a great author and that's why his works are called classic but in my opinion Great Expectations was just not captivating and was overall, dull and, for lack of better word, boring. Hopefully this is reason enough for you, just because a books a classic doesn't mean we have to like it.

Linda Visser Thank you JM. Well said

Huck Flynn Evi wrote: "To Huck Flynn, you sound like one of those people who hate on anyone who doesn't like old books just because they are considered classic. If you want specifics on what I and probably others didn't ..."

Hi Evi. Many thanks for your comments. I would never hate anyone because of their opinions of a book. However to "review" a book then i think it is fair to substantiate why you like (or dislike) it - that becomes useful to other readers. I fully respect your comments and considered response for that reason. I think the point of the book is that Pip learns (u r right) too late that his ambitions (great expectations) have been based on the wrong values and to a great extent he redeems himself by trying to save Magwitch. There are many fascinating characters - i agree about Estelle. So when you say the characters make the story great but it is boring seems to be self contradictory. There is a danger in condemning classics as "boring" - you are in essence saying that all those who appreciate them are somehow deluded or just wrong. Possibly better to discuss, as we are, why they enjoy them and what value they find. You should also be prepared to qualify statements like "unnecessary detail" and "useless dialogue". I guess that's what these forums are all about. So, i'm sorry if we can't be friends but i'll not hate you :-)

Spencer McDonell You just criticized one of literature’s greatest classics. With no evidence to back up your baseless opinion. Congratulations.

Gaetano Ceneri Perhaps you guys should take something for your ADD because this book is amazing.

Thomas Anyone who doesn't understand the greatness, the depth of the characters in this book, the genius that is Dickens at the top of his game. Watch some movies and stick to checkers, this is Chess and the deep books that zing over your head because you believe the harry potter books are the best ever written. Not.

Chicklet Wow. This didn't go over my head. I understand this book. Understanding and enjoying are not the same.
Spoken in a few sentences it's interesting. Reading it in full not so much.
I love Oliver. So it's not Dickens I don't care for, just this book.
Disliking Great Expectations doesn't make me stupid, or that I don't get it.
Reviews don't ever need defense of opinion contained within.
Thank you for everyone who shared their opinions of the book (love, hate, etc) rather than insulting me for not having the same.
Opinions, by definition, can't be wrong.

BoenWu blah blah blah

Thomas Another Troll looking for comments.

message 71: by Dana (new) - rated it 3 stars

Dana Huffer Couldn’t agree more with the OP. This book is the reason I’ve never returned to Dickens - two-dimensional characters, simplistic morality, humor that isn’t funny, and the book is way too long. Plus the writing itself is drier than a dehydrated Dana in the desert.

Reader PANAGIOTA M I felt the same 🤣
