It was a delight to be reading Robin Hobb again. This book involves a dozen or so malformed dragons, which the people of Cassarick want gone ASAP. The townspeople are tired of feeding and taking care of the dragons, who are unable to fly, so they can't really hunt for themselves. Their new keepers are a dozen or so malformed young people, who are human, yet some have scales and some have claws. They are all accompanied by Capt. Leftrin, who is working his way upriver on his barge. He's transporting the only dragon authority in the region, Alise Finbok, originally from Bingtown. She is traveling with her childhood friend, now her husband's assistant and her chaperone, Sedric Meldar. They are all in search of the ancient city, Kelsingra, where dragons used to live. Unfortunately, there's no map and no one, human or dragon, knows where the ancient city is located. I adored Alise. Her character is strong and strong-willed. She has to be because her husband, a Rain Wild Trader, Hest, is a total jerk. I didn't like his character at all. At first, I liked Sedric, but he and Hest are keeping a huge secret from Alise. I think she'll be very happy when she learns the truth, so I can't wait to start the second novel.
