Let me ask you a hypothetical question. Say your husband is missing and you're trying to find him. You reach out to someone you think has a connection to your husband. When they say, "I can explain," do you:
1. Calmly engage this person in conversation so you can learn what you need to know.
Or
2. Run out of there screaming like a lunatic.
If you picked 2, then congratulations. You are a shoo-in for a character in a domestic thriller, where everyone acts as crazy as possible, especially when the answer is right there.
Why do I let the hype get to me, especially when it comes to thrillers? They hardly ever live up to expectations, and most of them are so silly as to be ridiculous. In fact, if I had a dollar for every time I rolled my eyes while reading a thriller, I'd be a millionaire right now. But alas, all I have to show are bruised eyeballs.
What is there to say about this book that I haven't said a thousand times already? The premise is certainly captivating, and the start is strong. Then, slowly but surely, it devolves into nonsensical silliness, along with a heaping serving of the main female character acting ever more paranoid. And on top of that, there aren't even any good twists or surprises in here. The story unfolded pretty much as expected, which is the complete opposite of what a thriller should be.
Sorry if I sound bitter. I really had high hopes for this one, but obviously it didn't work out. On the plus side, I can safely put my copy in the donation pile and free up one precious spot on my bookshelf.

I was disappointed by this "thriller" too! I never understood the hype.

Yun, I completely agree with you on this one!! I did not care for this book either, and I cannot figure out all the hype and high ratings for this book. We both read the same book for sure!! Fantastic review!!

This is the book that made me quit trusting Reese’s bookclub recs and a perfect example of what happens when a book has a huge advertising budget despite being a literary turd. SO many other books deserved the spotlight this one got. And how on earth did this even get turned into a tv series (that I did not watch)🙄 Awful.

Totally agree. I can’t believe this got made into a tv show. There’s just fake drama created by the main character and nothing really happens.

I started this book and my thoughts equal your thoughts, only I didn't write a review so spectacularly on the nose. Thank you, Yun, for continually making me remember why I log in to this sweet corner of the interwebs.
I'm reading this right now ifor my book club on this coming Monday night. It's okay. I keep thinking "well this is pretty predictable, when do the big twists start happening?" as I'm about 80% complete.
OMG, I laughed so hard at your introduction!! 😂😂 The sad part is that it is on my TBR! I am going to give it a big football kick out and clear up my Kindle space too. Thanks for the honest review, Yun! Wishing you much better reads for the rest of this year. 😊
Excellent review, Yun! Sorry this one didn’t work for you. I had been curious about it, given the Apple series it recently inspired. I agree with you that illogical thriller lead characters are always making me want to toss my book away in anguish! Here’s hoping your next 2024 reads fare a bit better!

Nope! You don't sound bitter at all! I'm so flummoxed why some authors think we readers willingly swallow unbelievable characters involved in poorly-planned "thrillers".Great review, Yun!
I really enjoyed the book as it was quite capturing.
