Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Reason I am asking is because I have not read properly for a while. I want to read, but just can't sit down anymore and read. Wondered what everyone's take was on this. I know I have been on here posting, but I just can't seem to pick up a book and read.

Lynai | 0 comments I think it's not reader's block. It might be reader's over consumption LOL! It's time I guess to rest our eyes (and brains) and allow ourselves to miss reading for just a short while.

Yep, I agree with Lynai since I'm in the same sort of boat with you, Fiona. I can't seem to concentrate on a book and I'm in the middle of like 10 books or something crazy like that! I'm calling it 'restless reading'. And I think it was because I was soooo intent on a particular challenge that I've pretty much 'over-read' myself if that's even possible!

Hopefully I'll get over it soon since I'd really like to get back into reading properly.

Lynai | 0 comments we just love multi-tasking (multi-reading?), don't we? i'm in the middle of several books too!

message 5: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) I had my grandfather's funeral, my medical probs and now family are making an impact on my time. Which is why I am slowly reading this month. I am gonna make more time for my reading.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) I don't recall ever having "reader's block," but sometimes I get "read out" in a particular genre.

Right now I've had about enough mystery fiction for a while, so I'm reading other things. I'll get back to wanting to read mysteries again.

Lynlee4 | 134 comments I go through periods like that, too. It will pass :)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) | 75 comments Fiona, I am going through a sort of "readers block"! It is like a writer's block for readers. lol! Yeah, it kinda sucks. I want to read but I pick up something, and I am uninterested!

Slayermel | 664 comments I constantly have several books on the go, I'm so glad it's not just me. I was starting to wonder if I had problems focusing :0)

Kristen Harvey I agree with "overconsumption" it's like having a huge headache the day after and nothing you have lining your shelf to read (and trust me there's lots to choose from) appeals to you.

I don't get reader's block...

I find I'm more likely to get author block. I find an author and if I like then I generally read them out until I've read all of their books...then I have to find a new author!

And it's happening right now!

Southernbelle0326 | 20 comments I have periods like that. I am in the mood to read but dont know what I want to read. Once I pick a book and start reading it, I am not interested and put it down. I have put reading down all together and it seemed to help a little. I usually pick a book by which mood I am in but if you are read out then you just cant find anything that interests you.

Sam (ecowitch) | 409 comments I can't imagine not being in the mood to read, I've constantly got a book or two (or three or four) beside me to pick up wheneva, especially when the tv's on and there's going to be adverts (which seems to be most of the time). I used to suffer with author or genre block but Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ has totally solved that problem :-D I hope you get over your reader's block soon Fiona

message 14: by Steven (new)

Steven (yam655) | 26 comments I've had times where I had a hard time picking up or finishing any book. This has typically been related to other stressors and an abundance of anxiety. That's really the only time I've had something I could generally describe as "Reader's Block".

If you have trouble doing other things you normally enjoy, it may be a sign of depression. Depression is serious business. Talk to a professional if you can, though talking to your spiritual/religious advisor (priest, minister, etc.) may also help. Just make sure you talk to someone, and that it is someone you trust.

More regularly I have periods where I can't get in to a particular author or genre -- though overall it may be one of my favorite authors or genres. I attribute this to anxiety as well. This is easy enough to resolve by trying a different genre or author.

As a side-note, I'm a single-minded reader. If I like a book, and I plan to finish reading it, and something silly like misplacing it doesn't happen, I read it until it is done. The number two reason for me to start a second book before I finish the first is that I'm never going to finish the first one. (Unfortunately, the number one reason is that I've misplaced it -- though that's primarily a statement on how few books I quit or abandon.) When I was in young I was so single-minded that I would read fiction in my classes instead of paying attention to the teacher. (I only wish I'd started earlier.)

Trisha I'm so sorry to hear about the block, since we all love reading.
Maybe try a book on CD (maybe some casual easy listening in the car will be easier. You still enjoy the book but get to relax the eyes).
Or, maybe a book of short stories. That way, little commitment and lots of variety!
Good luck and I hope it passes soon!

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) I go through Reader's Block a couple times a year. Usually it lasts for about a month, and I just can't settle down with any one book like normal. It eventually wears off though, and then I am back to reading every second that I can nab. I would assume it happens because I over-indulge on the reading front, and sometimes my mind needs a rest from all of the amazing stories I am cramming it with. :)

Lahni | 660 comments When I became pregnant with my twins I totally lost my attention span for reading books. I didn't even want to listen to them. This is the first year I've really begun to read again and they are 3!! I had to start slowly and I've only pulled from books already on my to read list. In the past I have loved complicated reading challenges that encourage me to find new books to read but I just had to make it simpler so I'd want to read.

It's a habit I picked up from my dad. He explained it this way ... He always hated finishing a book, because he had gotten so caught up with the characters and wanted to continue being in touch with them and their lives. Sort of like missing old friends when they move away. So, if he had another book started already, that gave him something to turn to.

I also always have at least one that I'm reading on paper or ebook, and one that I'm listening to in the car when I'm driving.
