Well tweety, you are the one with lots of free time I think, so go ahead....
I noticed it too but only jsut have enough time to check all th eposts I want and make a comment here and there.....

When are you going to read another of his books? As you seem to have book troubles lately and never pick my recommendation of you two choices you give, why not just starting one of his other books and just see what it does?

message 2: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 216 comments Mod
No really, if you aren't sure about which book to read or you can't get into the mood of your book, why not trying it?

Jeane (icegini) | 216 comments Mod
oh and I didn't mean it in a bad way about all the free time, enjoy it now you have it. I still miss my waking up and start to read till going to bed and stop reading time that I had for more than a year till about four weeks ago!

Hmmm.. I'm not able to find Smoke Jumper anywhere. And Thirteen Moons by Charles Frazier isn't working out too well for me. So, bad times. But I booked Thousand Splendid Suns at the library and its expected to arrive by 4th of Feb. So, I'm waiting.

I understand your problem Fiona but then, Loop was such a nice one that we all can't stop from recommending it every other time.

There she goes!!! I am not religious but don't they say something, I mean catholics, not to do to others what you don't want them to do to you? All your talking Fiona, and what is the first thing you do????? Cheecky girl!!!:-)

Atishay, I so want to send the smoke jumper to you!!!!!

Lolz, thanks for the recommend Fiona! I so want to check it out only if i can get it. And you were damn lucky to get all the collection of Evans. But I got my copy of Thousand Splendid Suns today! So, some ray of hope for days to come. :)

I had to wait a lot till I finally got my hands on The Loop. Guess, it'll be the same with The Smoke Jumper. But then again, the joy of reading a book that you've been waiting for long is in itself so good. Same is the case with the Brave. We know it's still a long way to go but we've something to look forward to.

Meanwhile, its Thousand Splendid Suns for me. I'm hoping its better than the Kite Runner.

Okay, yes we have something to look forward but I am waiting for the brave from the moment he wrote in his newsletter that he was writing the book!!!!!

Kathy (readr4ever) | 136 comments I have suffered from no Internet for over a week. Yikes, it's hard to believe I survived it. Of course, it loses its priority when you go without electricity for 6 days, trying to stay warm in freezing temperature with just a fireplace and reading by flashlight. We had a horrible ice and snow storm (the ice was the biggest and baddest part) in western Kentucky, and we are still recovering from it. I got power back on Sunday, but I just got Internet and cable TV back tonight. My car window across the back got blown out by a big chunk of ice hitting it on Saturday, got that fixed yesterday. And, there are people who have had it lots worse. I know people who still don't have their power and won't for weeks.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 136 comments Fiona wrote: "Yikes! Crikey Kathy 6 days and no electricity? I go mad if it is only an hour. How did you cope with cooking etc? My dad's got a mini gas cooker and a kettle for such emergencies and I hope we neve..."

It was hell. I didn't cook, ate what was here that was non-perishable the first day and a half. After that my son, who was here, were able to find some places open to get sandwiches. What was especially horrible was going to bed and trying to pile on enough blankets to keep from freezing.

message 11: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 136 comments Oh, one trick I learned was to fill an empty milk jug with hot water (I have a gas water heater, so I still had hot water) and take it to be with me like a hot water bottle (didn't have one of those). It did help a little.

Oh my God Kathy, 6 days?!! You are a survivor. But must have given you a lot of time to read. :)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 136 comments Atishay wrote: "Oh my God Kathy, 6 days?!! You are a survivor. But must have given you a lot of time to read. :)"

Well, I did get some reading done (Too Close to Home, The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop, and The Wednesday Letters), but you would be amazed at how much time is spent just trying to stay warm and just take care of the essentials. Of course, reading with gloves on and by flashlight gets to be a pain, too. Often the daytime hours were spent out checking on my mother-in-law, getting hot coffee and food and such. But, as bad as it was, there were people who had it so much worse, especially those with small children and the elderly. My banker friend still doesn't have electricity and is staying with a friend. It's so amazing what we take for granted.

lots of reading time Kathy?

That was so bad Kathy. In fact, I love to read in bed at night and I always fall asleep reading, so in winters, I couldn't get my hands out of my blanket to turn the page because of the cold. To hold the book itself was unbearable. So, I perfectly understand what you went through.

message 16: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 136 comments Yeah, I truly was in survival mode. I think the temperature in the house got down to the upper 30's, but it felt colder than outside, which was colder. All I could do was get as much of me under covers as possible, dress in multiple layers, and keep a hat on my head and gloves on my hands. I would read before I went to bed by the fireplace with my flashlight. OK, I am through whining about my ordeal. It's time to get back to coercing Fiona into reading The Loop. Fiona?

Yes, a good plan. Fiona, give it up. We are officially doing an intervention, one that you will thank us for. Read The Loop. There is no escape now.

message 20: by Atishay, The Brave (new)

Atishay | 229 comments Mod
Yeah, come on now Fiona. Here are your three friends coaxing you into reading a book, that we know is awesome. What can be more beautiful than that? :P

message 21: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 136 comments Ah, the old tit for tat, Fiona. Well, I loved the movie of I Capture the Castle, so I promise to read it soon. Maybe as a good faith move, you could go ahead and read The Loop. Yes, I'm relentless.

message 22: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 136 comments Fiona wrote: "You are!

I loved the film too - it's a good adaptation. Pity you didn't read the book first though."

Yes, I agree. It is a rare instance in which I see a movie based on a book without having read the book first. I promise to rectify that mistake very soon.

message 23: by Atishay, The Brave (new)

Atishay | 229 comments Mod
I capture the castle looks nice from what I found in its summary. I'll be sure to give it a try whenever I get it. Meanwhile Fiona, do try out Loop or Smoke Jumper, whichever you want to. Smoke Jumper is a little similar in its narration to Horse Whisperer. Loop is again an outstanding book and completely different from the usual Nicholas Evans novels in some ways.

message 25: by Jeane (new)

Actually, If I can get I capture the castle, I'll leave Thousand Splendid Suns right at this moment and start that one. But where I'm living right now, its pretty hard to get new books. :(

message 38: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 136 comments OK, Fiona, I started Outlander last night. So far, so good. I didn't get very far, as I was very tired and went to sleep before I wanted to. Let us know when you start The Loop. I really do think you're going to enjoy it.

message 39: by Atishay, The Brave (new)

Atishay | 229 comments Mod
Deal, but I didn't like that part about putting aside Evans. He doesn't need to ferment, at least not for long. Maybe a week at the maximum.... there is Smoke Jumper too. And then if you haven't read Horse Whisperer too, its a must read.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone. Hope we're here on GR and chatting even 25 years from now.

message 47: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 136 comments Fiona, I am loving Outlander, on page 220 out of 850 something. It's going to be one of those books that 850 isn't long enough. I'm so glad that it's a series. I can't believe I hadn't read it before now. Thanks for the nudge. Now, I do have it right that you are reading The Loop, right? Comments so far?

I don't know if anyone has noticed, but Atishay is the only one of us not reading a book that has been pushed here lately. Atishay? Maybe you should take a look at the discussion thread on books similar to Evans' and pick one of our recommendations out. OK?

message 48: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 136 comments Fiona wrote: "Yeah, like I Capture the Castle :P Which isn't exactly like Evans but y'know. :P"

OK, that sounds good, Fiona. Atishay, you must begin reading I Capture the Castle immediately.

message 49: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 136 comments Atishay wrote: "Happy Valentine's Day everyone. Hope we're here on GR and chatting even 25 years from now."

I would also like to add a Happy Valentine's Day to all you wonderful Horse Whisperer readers. I do hope we continue to push, oops, I mean encourage one another to read great books, which, of course, includes Nicholas Evans.

message 50: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 136 comments Atishay, where are you? We are talking about you. I'm off to read on Outlander, but I'll be back tomorrow checking for you.

Jeane, how are you liking Outlander so far? I'm loving it.

Fiona, keep reading The Loop.
