Conrad | 2 comments Man, I am so going to abuse this board.

Back when I was working in a bookstore we had this book, a little larger than 8 1/2 x 11 and I think bright yellow, that was written by some guy who had allegedly built his own boat and sailed around Asia and Oceania, living off of nothing. He wrote this book that covered pretty much everything he'd learned, from how to lash together a raft to how to make shoes out of tires and beat up rapists and mend sails and avoid eating bad fish. The author likes to discuss his own unusual sense of spirituality, and is definitely nuts.

The book was encyclopedic, and it was all handwritten with a lot of pictures and diagrams that were also hand drawn. I'm desperate for a copy because I can afford the $20 now whereas I couldn't then. What the hell is it called?

Femmy | 26 comments How do you determine which title is used as the head title in a group of combined titles?

For example, I've been combining titles by Astrid Lindgren (http://www.goodreads.com/book/combine...)
and combined "Hari-Hari Bahagia di Bullerbyn" and "Happy Days at Bullerby", and the Indonesian title is used as the head title, while I imagine it would be better if the English title is used as the head title.

Otis Chandler | 315 comments Hi Femmy,

The most popular edition (by number of people who add it) becomes the default. There should probably be a way to override this for librarians - we'll add that to the 'todo' list.

Roberta (robbi_t) | 2 comments This sounds really good! :) I hope someone comes up with the name so I can read it too.

Conrad | 2 comments There has to be a reference librarian around somewhere who can help me out with this, right?

Bethany (bethlikesbooks) | 0 comments You don't remember the approximate year, do you?

message 7: by Conrad (last edited Aug 25, 2016 11:27AM) (new)

Conrad | 2 comments I doubt it was published earlier than 1995.

Conrad | 2 comments Thanks so much! Trust me, this book is its own easter egg. If you find it, it's worth taking a look.

Rebecca | 0 comments P.S. Your edition sounds like ISBN 067177476X

message 12: by Conrad (last edited Aug 25, 2016 11:28AM) (new)

Conrad | 2 comments Rebecca, thanks, but it's definitely not Kon Tiki. The book I'm thinking of is handwritten with drawings, is not by a professional academic, and is quite a bit newer.

Rebecca | 0 comments pooey! i'm very curious now... let us know if you ever find it.

Jon | 10 comments I agree--this needs to be corrected. I combined 6 editions of one book, and the one with the weird subtitle comes out on top . . . not great behavior.

Rebecca | 0 comments Just to make sure, it's not The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook, is it?

Just sprang to mind, it's almost so similar and is that big bright yellow cover with hand-drawn pics. Although, the guys who wrote it definitely did not live it.

message 16: by Conrad (new)

Conrad | 2 comments I know it's not Worst Case Scenario, and I'm pretty sure it's not Chubasco. The author only discusses his own life in passing; there's no narrative and it's mostly just a general advice kind of book.

Man, I wish I'd bought it while I still could.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Conrad, Don't give up. Bump it every once in a while. I found 2 books in this group months after my original post. Best wishes! New members join Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ &/or this group all the time.

Conrad | 2 comments This book's line drawings must've been done by someone well-known. They look a little Crumb-y.

There's a drawing where he shows you how to build a raft out of palm trees, and lash it together.

There's a drawing - more like a blueprint - of a boat that you can build yourself.

IIRC, there's a drawing of a homemade water desalinization system.

I think there might be some stuff about navigating by the stars in there, too.

MAN, I want this book!

message 20: by Erica (new)

Erica Conrad: Well, it isn't "The Island World of Polynesia" by Edward Dodd (and illustated by MY STEPFATHER) but there are two nice drawings of double canoes and lots of navigating info. More of a history than a survival guide. NOTE: I only saw this thread because of the bump, so keep the faith!
