Banking Voting Power Points

ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý  ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý

This is something the mods of Nothing But Reading Challenges thought we would try or “beta test to see if we could encourage more participation in posting Discussion Questions, Answers, or members to act as a Leader of a book discussion.
â— Each point is called a Participant Power Point (PPP). Every 10
ÌýÌýÌýÌý points
(or PPP) equals one Power Vote (PV) for a Book of the Month (BO)
ÌýÌýÌýÌý or featured Series Read (SR), “Buddy Readâ€ (“BRâ€) selection.

â— You can bank your points up to six months, then you must spend them
ÌýÌýÌýÌý or they are invalid. In other words, use them or lose them.

â— Participant Power Points can be earned on Books of the Month (BOM),
ÌýÌýÌýÌý featured Series Read (SR), or “Buddy Readâ€ (“BRâ€) novels.

â— Members will have 5 days after a poll closes to use their Power Votes
ÌýÌýÌýÌý before the official BOMs/SRs are announced and listed. Please Personal
ÌýÌýÌýÌý Message (PM) the Nothing But Reading Challenges Moderator ID to
ÌýÌýÌýÌý let us know you're cashing them in.

We will keep a to keep track of participants points.
ÌýÌýÌýÌý Please don't worry if your name and points are not there initially. Give us
ÌýÌýÌýÌý some time to work this out. We will post when you should verify that
ÌýÌýÌýÌý the points are updated and correct.

â— No one will be allowed to use more than five total Power Votes in any one
ÌýÌýÌýÌý poll. (Example: 5 PVs to YA, 5 PVs to Adult, 5 PVs to Anything Goes,
ÌýÌýÌýÌý 5 PVs to the featured Series Read.)

â— Occasionally the Moderators will post a BOM book selections that will
ÌýÌýÌýÌý NOT allow Power Votes to be used.

â— Occasionally, due to Real Life interference, someone may have to step-in
ÌýÌýÌýÌý as Leader* for someone else. In this case, the Mods will get together
ÌýÌýÌýÌý and determine the amount of Participant Power Points to be assigned
ÌýÌýÌýÌý to each respective member.
Member Activity Points
Answers DQs in BOM/SR/"BR"-1 set (Chapter Breakdown) 01
Bonus Points for answering all DQs 03
Post DQs for assigned Reading Section** 03
Leads "BR" on prior BOM or prior "BR"*** 10

* A Leader responds to each member, posting their own answers either
in an individual post, or within their responses to members answers.
** A "Chapter Breakdown" is defined as one that averages 50-75 pages
   per reading section.
***This refers to DQs posted previously & recycled.

Stefani (steffiebaby140) | 807 comments Quick question. When I look at the spreadsheet, I see a 6 next to my name. I assume this means the points that I have, not the amount of votes that I have...correct? Will there be another column for votes earned or just point totals?

Yes. When last I looked we still need to add in The Rook and then Alice in Wonderland. You have actually 9 if I looked correctly. I'm missing. Lisa Kay set the spreadsheet up. We'll get them updated before anyone needs to use them.

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments I like it. I would love to see some sort of points added for participating in the polls (by nominating or voting) to get people more involved in that process as well.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Stefani wrote: "Will there be another column for votes earned or just point totals?"

My first response was to say, "Just divide by 10." Then I thought about it, and I can see this will be needed after people start using their votes.

Kudos to you. I never tried Google spreadsheet I'm more an excel girl.

It doesn't need to be fancy, but functional and readable. :o)

Btw, if you break the points by book it probably will be a little confusing after a few books...

The ideal would be a column with ppp won, ppp total, pov available (If you wanted to be thorough then you could break this one into pov earned, pov spent, pov available, but that could be complicating things - sorry, sometimes I get excited with the ideas)

I can't picture the breaking into books here, but it is needed so everyone could track ppp earnings... my damned biased inner chip'n'dale are screaming "pivot table", "pivot table" - don't worry, I told them to be quiet :o)

Maybe transforming the books into column titles?

Sorry, I got a little bit carried away *blushes*

message 10: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments I think we need the book breakdown to see when votes expire. They can only be accrued for 6 months before you must use them or lose them. I'm guessing once we get people with enough PPPs to equal votes we'll add another column. Am I right in this Lisa Kay?

message 11: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Parvathy wrote: "Doubt: If you use a power vote how many equivalent normal votes are you casting. How will we let you know when we are using the power vote?"

10 Participation Power Points equal 1 vote. I thought Lisa added in there that you will email our moderator account to let us know you wish to cash in your votes. One power vote equals 1 regular vote.

True, I was just suggesting that instead of breaking into row sections, we could have the book breakdown into columns... that way you could have a total points column that automatically summed the points from the book columns... as I did in the example... I just thought it was easier to read that way... but I have a tendency to complicate things while thinking how to do them :o)

Ahh, I see what you mean. That does look nice.

message 16: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Thanks.

Since the points are only valid for 6 months... that way you only have to highlight the "to be lost" column (using a diferent column maybe) and by the end of the month, delete it, and then the remaining points are automatically recalculated...

Great question, Jex. We were just discussing this among the mods and we feel if you are a slower reader, and you are therefore delayed in answering the DQs past the BOM vote, your points will just apply toward the next month.

message 35: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments I've been too busy reading. I find I start out answering questions when I'm first into a book and able to put it down. But once I start to get pulled in I don't stop reading, and I don't want to stop and answer questions, lol. I'll never get bonus points because I'm too busy reading. (Sometimes I find there are too many questions; makes me feel like I'm back in school having to do a book report and that sometimes just puts me off).

I love the books NBR picks (well, most of them) and I do at least try to read most of them or at least give them a start to see if I like them. I've read more types of books I would have never picked up if they hadn't been a BOM or a series read or a challenge, and I think that's what the real focus of the group is anyways; to read more books and engage in discussions with each other about the books. I'm so grateful to all the moderators for all the hard work you do. My focus is just not on answering questions, but on actually reading, more reviewing and discussing as if I was sitting down with friends over a cup of (imaginary)coffee.

I wish there was a point system, even if it were only 1 point given, for general discussion and for those of us who read, write a review, or generally discuss the BOMS etc. In the end, though, I didn't join up to get points; I joined because I wanted to read good new (to me) books, and discuss with friends those books.

I personally don't see the advantage of even voting for a book if my vote won't count in the end and can be overridden by someone who likes to answer 50 questions.

Kim | 259 comments I actually LOVE the way books of the months are done in this group. There are TONS of Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ groups that read books and discuss them, but I LOVE the way this group does them with a schedule and questions. I haven't been able to participate as much as I have wanted because of health problems, but I am hoping to be able to participate more now. I like the point system too. I feel like the ones who answer questions and help write them should have a bigger say on what books are chosen since they participate more. I guess what I am trying to say is I joined this group because I wanted different than just a general discussion of the book like most of the other groups!!! :).

message 37: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments FYI, only one person with banked voting points cast one vote last month.

I'd write more, but I'm on the way to the library for my lunch break!

message 38: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments I love the reading schedule routine of this group. It is the main reason I joined ~ a set date to read with everyone else, and I love the way books are broken down to distinctive reading sections for each day :-)I don't like the point system and now the requirement to answer all the questions in order for a vote to count and just felt like expressing my opinion on it today. I appreciate all the hard work that the moderators and active contributors do to keep this group running.

I'm wondering if book choices are going to be overturned every month in favor of those who prefer a certain genre because they have the points and have read the previous month's books? I hope there will still be a variation of book selections from all genres for everyone to enjoy.

Stefani (steffiebaby140) | 807 comments Cathie wrote: "I'm wondering if book choices are going to be overturned every month in favor of those who prefer a certain genre because they have the points and have read the previous month's books?"

I find that to be very unlikely. There are only a certain number of votes you can use (I think it's 5 per category). And more people will start using them. And with no way to know who else used their votes and for what...it basically is just a continuation of the poll.

The single vote used last month was me, because two books in that category were tied. So I find it unlikely that this group of people with votes will be singlehandedly deciding the BOMs. Sometimes? Certainly it's probable. But in order for that to happen the book would already have to be close to winning anyway, so clearly there would be a larger community interest as well. One person could not take a book from 1 vote to winning.

message 40: by Mary (last edited Nov 14, 2012 12:19PM) (new)

Mary (merinwe) | 1043 comments Thanks Cathie, for sharing that. Keep in mind that this is still in its beginning stages, so opinions like yours and Kim L's above are very helpful to hear. I'll bring this up with the mods and we can talk everything over. I'm sure when everything's said and done, a few things will need to be tweaked in order to fit everyone's needs.

Also, keep in mind that 1 Power Vote = 1 regular vote, and no more than 5 Power Votes can be used at a time. So far, we've only had one Power Vote used at all. When you vote in a poll, your vote counts. A PV is just an extra vote, that's all.

I was going to post the same Stefani did. That the only way someone was going to be able to change a book was if another book was very close behind it which means a lot of people wanted to read it too.

I think the points add another element of fun to the group.

Cathie,

You don't need to answer all the questions to get the days points, just answer the ones you wish to. We aren't trying to make you feel like you have to answer them all, we're just trying to stimulate discussion. Since we list the reading schedule, you can always try to coordinate when you end your reading with the date we end the discussion and score points by telling us what your overall thoughts of the book are and what you liked most since those are almost always included in the last set of discussion questions.

Yes, this is why we set it up this way. It is intended to settle votes that are close, without the mods having to step in and decide.

We have been tossing around ideas of what to do for quite a while now. As a mod who has had to step in and read (and buy! because I couldn't get the book at the library) a book that I did NOT want to read...but, won the vote, (I was Discussion Leader), you might be able see why I really wanted this to go out in "beta" testing.

Yes, it is expected we will have to tweak things.
