Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) Only 3 more weeks of our current challenge are left, it's time to think about our next challenge!

If there isn't anyone who'd like to run the next challenge, then I volunteer. I've been putting together a challenge just in case. :)

But if there's a new person who'd like to run a challenge for the first time, by all means, I'd love that!

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) No thoughts? Shall I post my suggested challenge then?

I thought we'd revisit our old challenge format, with 5 tasks per section, each task with a specific point value. Some of these tasks we've done before, but I liked them and borrowed them back for this challenge. :)

Ground Rules and Notes:
1. The Challenge begins at 12:00 A.M. local time on 1 January 2013 and ends at 11:59 P.M. local time on 31 March 2013; for a book to count for the challenge, it cannot be more than 1/2 read before 12:00 AM on 1 January 2013.
2. This Challenge is just for fun, so make sure you enjoy yourself and all the books you will be reading!
3. All books must be classified as Young Adult or Juvenile Fiction; unless specifically stated otherwise in a task. If you local library classifies the book you chose as juvenile-young adult, then the book may be included.
4. All books must be at least 100 pages long to count for any of the tasks.
5. Re-reads are NOT allowed unless it falls into one of the following categories: it is a book you never finished, it is a book you didn't like but want to give another chance. The goal is to try new things, not reread old ones, but if you think it fits or feel it's reasonable, it probably is; just ask. :)
6. Audio books and electronic books (unabridged), such as Kindle, all count for this Challenge. Page counts will be according to the GoodReads page count.
7. When reporting completion of tasks, please link the title and author if possible. Also include the number of pages for the first edition listed on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ (as was done in the first challenge). The point-count Leaderboard will be updated as often as I am able or as necessary. If you find discrepancies in the point totals, please notify me. If you change a book to a different task, please notify me.

Here's a sample post:
1.5 Wither by Lauren DeStefano - 358 pages

4.10 Dragonwings by Laurence Yep - 336 pages
originally pub. in January 1975

Total Points: 15
Total Pages: 694

Official Wild Things Section

1.5: Read a selection from our group bookshelf that you have not previously read. (http://www.goodreads.com/group/booksh...)
1.10: Read one of the group reads chosen during January, February, or March.
1.15: Read a book that fits Kellee’s monthly challenge for January, February or March. *Whichever month you choose, you cannot claim points PRIOR to that month beginning. So don’t read/claim a book that works for March early in January!*
1.20: Read a 4- or 5-star book from a WT member you've never conversed with. There are nearly 2,000 of us; scroll to the bottom of the page or click members in the right-hand menu to browse for someone you don’t know. If the book you choose has an existing thread, add to the discussion. If it does not yet have a thread, begin a thread and discuss it. The book must be one you’ve never read before. Posting in a thread about the book is required to get the points for this task, also the name of the member is required.
1.25: Read 2 books that have previously been nominated for our group reads but were not selected. If the books have existing threads, discuss them. If they do not yet have threads, begin threads and discuss them. Posting is required to get the points for this task.

“What’s in a Name section

2.5: Read a book with a first or last name in the title. (Example: Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh)
2.10: Read a book with a verb in the title. (Example: The Running Dream)
2.15: Read a book with a character that has the same first or last name as someone in your household, yourself included. A different spelling of the same name is acceptable.
2.20: Read a book with a word or phrase that repeats in the title. (Example: Love You Hate You Miss You)
2.25: Read 2 books by the same author, or by 2 different authors with a common name. (Example: Carrie Jones and Carrie Ryan, or Carrie Ryan and Patrick Ryan)

“Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner section
Note: All books must be award winners or honor award winners, as required in the tasks. Being on a booklist is not considered an award win for this challenge. Also, all books must be YA or MG to count. Here's a link to some info about book awards http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

3.5: Read a past or current winner or honor book for any award. Please state which award and year when posting.
3.10: Read any winner or honor book by an author who has been nominated more than once. Please state which 2 years the author has been nominated.
3.15: Read one of the 2012 Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Choice Awards nominees or winners. http://www.goodreads.com/choiceawards...
3.20: Read both the winner and a nominated book for the same award from the same year. Please state which award and year when posting.
3.25: Read the 2012 winners of two different awards, excluding state awards. Please state awards when posting.

4.25: In honor of Spring, read 2 books with one of the following on the cover: flowers, birds, blue skies, or baby animals. You must link the books covers when posting.

50 point task All four tasks must be completed before points will be awarded.

a: Read any book from the Wild Things Top YA Novels List http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
b: Read a book that has a compound word in the title. (Example: "Countdown" [count+down] and "Breadcrumbs [bread+crumbs])
c: Read an Alex award winner and discuss whether you agree that both kids and adults would enjoy it. *Books classified as "Adult" are acceptable for this task.* Here's a link to the winners:

message 5: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Love it! I have missed challenges in this format.

message 6: by Kari (new)

Kari Like it!

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) Any unclear wording? Anything you see that could be construed multiple ways?

message 8: by Kari (new)

Kari So 1.20 would be worth 20 points. Then in addition a, b, c & d equal 50 points once these are completed? Or is it 50 additional points if you complete all sections?

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) Kari wrote: "So 1.20 would be worth 20 points. Then in addition a, b, c & d equal 50 points once these are completed? Or is it 50 additional points if you complete all sections?"

Correct, 1.20 would be worth 20 points. You do not have to complete all of the tasks of section 1 to get the points you've earned. So, if you complete 1.15, you will get 15 points right then.

However, if you completed section a of the 50 pointer, you cannot collect 12.5 points. You can only collect the points when a, b, c and d are all completed.

You do not have to finish all of the 4 sections prior to getting the bonus points, I'll award the 50 bonus points as soon as a, b, c and d are all completed.

message 10: by Kari (new)

Kari Got it! Thanks for the clarification. :) I can't wait to start. It sounds really fun!

If I want to use an Odyssey award winner (which is given for audio books) do I have to listen to the book? I totally would, but my library doesn't have it. :(

Nah, as long as it won some award where an award is required I don't think it has to be read in the winning format. Just make sure you make different voices in your head ;-)

I don't always stick to my lists either, but I like to have a chance to get my bookshelves ready. I try to pull them towards the front, rather than dig every time!

Kari I just tried clicking on this link, and it brought me to a pride & prejudice discussion.

a: Read any book from the Wild Things Top YA Books List (http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1... )

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Hi :) For 3.10 does ALA Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Adult Readers count?,
For 3.25 can it be the 2013 winner after the ALA awards are announced on Monday?,
And for 2.15 does animal names count? Or extended family? It is only my husband and I here...

Hi!
No on the Quick Pick. Avoiding book lists, or short list types for this challenge.
Yes, go ahead and use pet names or middle names since your household isn't very large.
And I'm going to stick to the 2012 stipulation for 2013. Sorry!

Celeste (celeste_bocchicchio) | 88 comments for 1.25 is there an easy way to find out what was previously nominated for group reads? I can't seem to find the threads where you nominate books once the winners have been chosen.

I wondered the same thing after I made that task, lol!

What I did to choose my book was scroll through the polls. The ones that are for our monthly reads are pretty clearly labeled. I felt like that was the fastest way without having to click through multiple threads. (You can get to the polls at the top right of this screen)

Would Scumble count for 2.10? It is a made up word, but it is a verb.
