We have a script for empty authors, so that's not really an issue.

message 352: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments As Vicky says, obviously better than I did.

Ok, slotted for deletion. (With so many adds, a deletion isn't instantaneous.)

Karma♥Bites ^.~ (karma_bites) | 947 comments Banjomike wrote: "...On the subject of "any thoughts of an author" it would presumably depend on who the author was. ..."

Yes, that's why I've been using rivka's post re: "notable author" (link in msg #340 above) as a guideline whenever a quote was attributed to a specific work.

I took rivka's "published secondary source material which is reliable, intellectually independent, and independent of the subject" as such quotes requiring a source independent of the person "being quoted". Was I incorrect?

message 355: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
We consider Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ an acceptable secondary source. Therefore, any author with at least one work listed here qualifies as "notable".

Karma♥Bites ^.~ (karma_bites) | 947 comments Ah, didn't realise that having books listed on GR fell within "published secondary source material". That was my error.

Thanks so much, rivka!

If a delete is only scheduled, does that mean it can be cancelled and a quote 'saved'?

message 358: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
I am not aware of any mechanism to do so. In any case, the deletion went through.

message 359: by Gerd (new)

Gerd | 1050 comments Three versions of the same quote:

http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/69909...

http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/70518...

http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/15920...

I assume that the long version is the correct one, but could somebody verify that and then correct the two short versions and merge them?

message 360: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 259 comments I changed the second link to the first two lines in the longer version, but I don't know how to merge quotes yet. :/ Sorry!

Although, personally, I think you should keep the longer one and shorter ones separate from each other. Some people might only want to like those first couple lines and not the rest of it, you know?

message 361: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments I've combined the two short versions. I can't find a definitive printed attribution but the long version does look to be a commonly accepted version.

The last one is edited.

Why do the others need deleting?

message 365: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments Taylor wrote: "Because none of those quotes are actually in the book. The page was vandalized."

Ah, I see. In that case you probably need to contact Customer Support. Vandalism and spamming are NOT approved and the offender (it looks like the same person has added/like all the quotes) needs to be dealt with.

That was a quote of the day so basically we are stuffed until a staffer reads this thread.

Karma♥Bites ^.~ (karma_bites) | 947 comments I don't know how something like this would be handled so linking to search result. In essence, generally the same quote but with variations. Any way to merge into the complete/primary one, please? TIA :)

See my previous answer. One of them was a quote of the day so basically we are stuffed...

I've combined the others but the QotD rigmarole locks non-staff out.

The main/only clue is that there is no edit button. And a combine will always fail.

Karma♥Bites ^.~ (karma_bites) | 947 comments Aha, thank you. LOL, I don't recall ever seeing those options. But then, I don't go that far with quotes--better/safer to just come here. Cheers! :)

The only staff member likely to read this thread does not touch QoTDs.

Curses. Referring quotation problems to support has always seemed like overkill. I'll wait until there is a bunch of them and then send one message.

Could you ask the relevant people if it would be possible to allow combines INTO the QotD? That should not alter the QotD in any way.

Banjomike wrote: "Could you ask the relevant people if it would be possible to allow combines INTO the QotD?"

There isn't, because any quote merge only has a "survivor" by virtue of number of which one is liked more. So there's no such thing as merging into another quote; just merging two quotes.

You are right and I've corrected it. But the Wilde version you link to is a Quote of the Day so cannot be combined or merged. We now have two versions by Oscar Wilde.

message 395: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (readingontheporch) | 267 comments Author asked me to remove this quote, as the story was edited and the wording was taking out completely:
http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/85220...

I have the necessary rights to delete, so is it okay to go ahead and do that?

message 396: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments The reason you can delete this specific quote is that no-one has liked it. If it had been liked then it would NOT be permissable to delete it EVEN if the author himself asked and had rewritten the book.

If I get PMs asking for deletions I always repost them in the relevant threads. Some authors have a habit of asking for things that way when they expect to be refused.

message 397: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (readingontheporch) | 267 comments So, since nobody has liked it, and I've verified that it actually doesn't appear this way in the story, can I delete it?

As I said, you can delete it. Just remember that rewriting the book is NOT a valid reason in itself.

Yes, I understand that. In this case, quotes were added by the author himself while he was still writing the book.
Thanks for your help.

message 400: by Pisceschick (new)

Pisceschick | 34 comments I'm a Librarian but as I'm not familiar with the rules about quotes, I thought I'd post here for help.

This quote is a link to a fellow's Twitter feed and I'm guessing that's not allowed:
FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER

Also, he has entered several random things attributed to himself that I don't think meet the "notable" qualification. The likes are all from him and what looks to be an alt account.

Thanks for your help! <3
