What year did you read it or about when was it published? Author male or female? Standalone or series?

I believe it was a standalone (but I'm not sure), as I never saw anything else in-universe.
Ummm, not sure when published - but it is definitely at least 10ish years old, and could be closer to 20 - I think 40 would be too much, as the art was newer - and the book was longer - than stuff published in the late 70s.
I'm *guessing* that the author was
Bujold and Huff are the only two I can think of off the top of my head.
edit:
Man, I was tired when I wrote that - meant to say, 'is male' as there are (effectively) no female writers.
Also, turns out it's pretty much 20 years old on the dot :D

Few books that I have not read so maybe take a look - none by female authors:
In this book we are "allies" with aliens: /book/show/1...
Name starts with B and we are conquering for a master race: /book/show/4...
And last to check:
/book/show/8...
Author's last name probably starts with a B, could be A, could be C, but probably end of As or B.
Yellow/Orange/Red cover.
Humanity fought against the aliens, who're all slaves of an over-ruling alien-race (communal, telepathic, small-minded frogs who made AI). Who own a lot of alien races, most notably a warrior-race, who fought and conquered humanity.
Humanity did well however, and thus was brought in as enforcers/cops/slave warriors.
Humanity has held rebellious thoughts, and squirreled away tech and is bent on acquiring more, and attempts (or thinks about attempting) a rebellion.
The enforcer dudes stop them from this (ie: putting down one human rebellion/or advising against it), and tell them that they can't... (view spoiler)[because enforcer dudes have tried this route before - or want to. But that the overlords still haven't revealed all of their tech. For example, during the book the frogs reveal the capability that FTL-engaged ships can be boarded during flight - up to that point had been thought to be impossible by the enforcer-race. And counsel the humans to wait. (hide spoiler)]
The frogs are fighting another set of enemies, which none of their slave races have seen. (this book reminds me of the Damned trilogy, but is not).
- I think frogs gave off/had sulfur atmosphere.
- Frogs were not independently sentient, needed to be in a group. Almost always around a computer.
- Warrior/Enforcer race was big and powerful.
- Humans had stashed away battle-armor and nukes in the asteroid belt.
