I'm going to create a task for the first time. I'm so thrilled and I hope you'll enjoy choosing books for this task. 9 years ago I moved to England from Poland to be an au pair. I didn't plan to stay in England forever but life is full of surprises. Over here I met my husband who is Iranian, we married and we have two naughty boys but my life is pretty messed up ;) We have three languages at home (English, Polish and Farsi), three different cuisines, different styles of life, different religions and every day we learn something new about each other.
For this task let's mess up a little and at the same time learn something new.
Read one book:
1. I read books mostly in English which is not my native language. Read a book originally written in a different language than your own.
For example : if my native language is Polish I could read a book written in English and if your native language is English you could read book which was originally written in Spanish, Japanese, Russian, etc.
Required : State the original language of the book
2. March 21 is Persian New Year (Nowruz). To celebrate this day, read a book set in Iran/ Persia , this list can help Books Set in Iran OR written by Iranian author (by birth or residence) like Azar Nafisi, Kader Abdolah, Shirin Ebadi, Jasmin Darznik
3. March 21 is also the first day of Spring. To celebrate this day, read a book with something yellow on the cover. Yellow titles and/or text are EXCLUDED.
.

Required :Please include the cover in your post
4. Being chosen to create this task made me very happy and sleepless at the same time. Read a book of your choice that promises sleepless night or simply makes you happy
Required: Please identify the option

25.1 Delicious Dee's task: Anchor’s Aweigh
Help Thread
It has been an interesting few months for me and at one stage I wasn’t actually sure if I was going to participate in last season’s SRC because I decided after 7 years to get out of the Navy. But here I am, so I thought I would base my task on some of my experiences in the Navy. For this task, you will read TWO books from DIFFERENT OPTIONS
Option 1 - read a non-fiction book (including biographies/autobiographies) about the U.S. Navy i.e. Six Frigates: The Epic History of the Founding of the U.S. Navy, a U.S. Navy historical figure i.e.The Quiet Warrior: A Biography of Admiral Raymond A. Spruance or a mission/battle/operation involving the US Navy i.e. The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors: The Extraordinary World War II Story of the U.S. Navy's Finest Hour
Required: Please explain the connection if it is not clear in the book description
Option 2 - I received my commission through the NROTC program at Virginia Tech. Read a book where the letters NROTC can be found in the TITLE (subtitles may also be used) . The letters do not have to be sequential, but all must be in the title i.e. Turn Coat N, R and T in Turn, C, O in Coat; Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers N in Human, R, O, C in Curious, T in Stiff.
Required: State where the letters are found
Option 3 - I was commissioned on May 13, 2005 and discharged on Jan 31, 2013. Read a book that was published between those two dates
Required: State the publishing date in your post
Option 4 - The Navy gave me many opportunities to see parts of the world that I had never dreamed of. Over my time, I was deployed to and spent time in/visited Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Jordan, Seychelles, Iraq, Kuwait, Italy, Spain, Scotland. Read a book set in one of these countries OR by an author from one of those counties.
Required if not obvious from the title, description state in your post
Option 5 - the Navy loves their acronyms and abbreviations pretty much every command you are at will have a shortened name (makes it so much easier for talking on the radio). For me, these were DDG-58; LSD-41; CPR-4; JCCS-1; NCIS. Read a book where the initials of all authors or contributors are found within one of the abbreviations. i.e. Diana Gabaldon in DDG, Colin Cotterill in JCCS, Italo Calvino in NCIS, Philip R. Craig in CPR. (Craig's collaborations with William G. Tapply such as Second Sight (Brady Coyne, #22) would not work- initials PRCWGT)
Required state the abbreviation you used in your post
Option 6 - read a book with a boat/ship (water-bound) on the cover (i.e.
). This list Ships on the Cover might help (but as with any task, verify if you have questions). Required - show the cover in your post
REQUIRED State the options when you post

25.5 - Nick KY’s Task: Shadow of the White Tiger
Help Thread
For this task, read two books. Each book has two Options:
Book 1.
Option A. Read a book with a black or white silhouette on the cover. This is similar to a 5-point task from Spring of 2012, only, in respect to the White Tiger, I am adding the stipulation that the silhouette must be black or white. Here are some examples:
The tree is in silhouette, even if the girl has too many discernible features to be called a silhouette.
Remember, a silhouette is not a shadow. It is a featureless outline of an object. In a photograph it is usually a dark featureless outline against a lighter background. But, as you can see from the examples, many drawn silhouettes are light against a dark background.
Required: Post a link showing the cover.
Option B. Because following the Shadow of the White Tiger is such an adventure, choose any book by any author who has won the for mystery-adventure. You may also use any book by one of the 2012 nominees (earlier winners are listed on the right hand side of the page; scroll down for short list and long list nominees.)
Required: Tell if your author is a winner of the Steel Dagger or is a 2012 nominee.
Book 2.
Option A.
Follow the Shadow of the White Tiger by choosing a second book in the following manner:
Go to the . (Click on the link or type in )
In the search box, type the name of the author of your first book, whichever option you chose When the results pop up, choose a book by any author whose name appears. [If for Book 1 you read a book with multiple authors (such as a collection), you may put in any of the contributors names as long as you can provide a link to Book 1’s contributor list or a table of contents.]
Option B. If you do not like your choices, or do not have any from following the Literature Map, you may read a book by any author whose first and last initials are found in the words “WHITE TIGER that is, “W, H, I, T, E, G, R. You may use the same letter twice.
Required: Tell us which option you choose for Books 1 and 2.
25.6 - Lois's task: Happy Birthday Girl Scouts!
Help Thread
The first Girl Scout troop in the United States was founded by Juliette Gordon Low on March 12, 1912, in her home town of Savannah, Georgia.
Choose two different options and read one book from each:
A. Read a book with a strong girl* character. This should be a girl who is 18 or under for a significant part of the book, even though she may age beyond 18 by the end of the book. [Examples: Jane Eyre, Jo March...] It is preferred if the ŷ description of the book identifies the age or youth of the character. ex. Wild Magic, True Grit,The Lions of Little Rock
*Please keep in mind that books with the genre listing "childrens" must be at least 300 pages long to be used for this task.
Required: Please identify the character and/or character's age if it is not clear in the book description
B. Read a book whose title/subtitle includes the word “Girl or “Scout or “Guide (as they are called "Girl Guides" in many parts of the world). Plurals, possessives, variations, and compound words all work. ex. The Scouting Party, Misguided Angel, Girlchild, Dreams of Trespass: Tales of a Harem Girlhood
C. Read a book whose author’s name OR words in the title/subtitle begin with any two or more of the letters WAGGGS (World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts) ex Sarah Waters (SW), George Steiner (GS), Gone Girl (GG), A Student of Weather (ASW)
D. Read a book set in Savannah, Georgia. This may help Books set in Savannah
Required: Please identify the options when you post
25.7 - Chaitra's task: Judge a Book By Its Cover!
Help Thread
For this task, choose ONE option and read TWO books from the same option.
Option A - Dismembered: Read two books with covers showing a person/animal with a body part missing. If your cover shows multiple people, all of them should show dismemberment! No whole people allowed on the covers, sorry. You may use the same missing body part on both covers, i.e., both covers can show only hands, but it is not necessary
What works:
Option B - There's That "Thing" Again: Read two books with the same main "object" on the covers. The cover should be all inanimate - no people or animals on the cover, not even their shadows. For the purpose of this task, I'm classifying vampires and other varied undeads as living. Plants, trees, flowers etc are acceptable.
What works:
&
cupcakes
&
chess piece
&
bed
Required: Name the main object that appears on both books
Option C - Aargh My Eyes!: Read two books with loud, neon-ish colors on the cover. Anything garish is welcome here!
What works:
Option D - No-Nonsense: Read two books with minimal artwork and plain, unobtrusive titles on a solid colored cover.
What works:
Option E - Yeah, I Would Totally Buy That: Read two books with covers you consider beautiful. This one is based on your opinion - hot guys are perfectly ok. :D
Required:Mention the chosen option. Since this is a cover hunt, please post the link to the covers.
Have a great challenge!
25.8 Janet F's task: Springy Ideas!
Help Thread
I'm so grateful to ŷ and SRC for getting me motivated and diligently reading these past two challenges. My book task options incorporate some of the helpful hints that I've used.
Pick 2 different options and read a book for each.
Option 1: Word Search- To find books for some tasks I search by word on my library search engine and the GR webpage or app. On GR I type a word into the search bar in 'my books' and try to find a 'to-read'. You can also search using the general GR search bar and peruse all the choices; you can select 'title' to narrow it. Try typing March, April or May and see what you get.
+ For this option read a book where one of the words "March", "April" or "May" is found intact in the title or subtitle. For example: Middlemarch, Mayberry, Dismay, Devil May Care.
Option 2: Words with Friends- My GR friends motivate me when they finish or rate a book.
+ Read a book that one of your GR friends recently (using your subjective interpretation of 'recent' ) read and/or rated & gave a 4 or 5 star to.

Option 3: Audiobooks killed the radio star- I sincerely apologize to my favorite FM channel for my absence. Since I started the SRC I always have an audiobook playing in my car. I watch a lot less TV too but the dish satellite company is still paid so they need no apology from me.
+ Read a book that shows a mechanism for communication other than a book- like a pen/pencil, artist's brush, musical notes/sheet music, radio, telephone, television, newspaper/magazine, letter/envelope, computer, walkie-talkie/2-way radio
Required: include the cover when you post and identify the object..
Option 4: Siri, tell me a story - I've listened to some audiobook readers I really enjoy. Karen Savage did nice readings for Librivox.org including Anne of Green Gables and The Secret Garden. She has a website and a blog so you can track her 'read aloud' productivity!
+ Read (rather, listen to) an audiobook
Required:You must link to the audiobook when you post AND the link to the Mass Market Paperback or other edition used to establish length. There are specific audiobook rules. See Book Formats and Page Numbers Explained in Rules of the Challenge
Option 5: A Book Garden- Plant one book and watch it grow! Each book I read seems to make my 'to-read' list grow like a Spring garden. Especially now that a SRC Winter task taught me how to use the GR "Readers also enjoyed similar books" area (lower right side) of the main page of many books on GR.
+ Use a book from my Rookie help thread msg 43 or that you read for my Winter Rookie 20.2 task as your starting point. Pick one of these books and see what books are listed as "Readers also enjoyed similar books" and read one of them for this task option. Record the date you found your book as the 'similar books' change.
Required: Include the starting book title when you post and state whether you used it yourself for Winter task 20.2 or whether you found it in post 43.
Option 6: Searching for the Sun- My winter 'snow' task paid off in good karma for the local mountain snow.
+ This time find an author who has a quote on GR with the word 'sun' in the text of their quote ŷ Quote Search Make sure 'sun' is in the actual quote and not a 'tag' or book title listed underneath the quote. Read a book written by the author whose quote you choose.
Required: Post the quote or relevant "sun" phrase from the quote and the author. ex. "Maybe the first time you saw her you were ten. She was standing in the sun scratching her legs." ~ Nicole Krauss
Required: Please identify the option when you post.

What works:

Required: Please identify the GR friend
Option 3: Audiobooks killed the radio star- I sincerely apologize to my favorite FM channel for my absence. Since I started the SRC I always have an audiobook playing in my car. I watch a lot less TV too but the dish satellite company is still paid so they need no apology from me.

50.1 - Ms Anderson's task: Two Truths and a Lie
Help Thread
Man! I take half a season off and a million new people join the SRC. Hi, new people!
In honor of all our new participants (well, and all the long-time ones, too), I thought we could play a little game--my favorite one to play with my sixth graders at the beginning of the year. The name is "Two Truths and a Lie," and it's played much as it sounds: you say three statements about yourself, two of which are true and one that is false. You can mix them up however you like, and then everyone tries to guess which is the false one.
We will be doing this with books. Pick three books, two of which relate in REAL ways to your life somehow and one that does not.
For example, I could read:
A: Wonder (I was the new kid in school in fifth grade)
B: Who Done It? (I've met some of the contributing authors)
C: Liesl & Po (I had issues with my parents' other spouses, too)
You don't NEED to tell us which is the fake one, but you do need to post the relation to your life (or not) for each book you choose. The relation doesn't need to be all that creative, either. I could read Little House on the Prairie and say "I'm a girl, just like the narrator" or some middle-grade fantasy and say that I've befriended dragons. Obvious statements are fine.
Oh, and there's one final catch: ALL THREE BOOKS must have the genre "Middle Grade" on the main page. After all, I play this game with my students, and sixth grade is middle school here.
Happy reading, and nice to meet you all!
NOTE: Books with genre "Children" or "Kids" with 100-300 pages may be used for this task
NOTE: Genres "Sequential Art", "Comics", "Comic Book", and "Manga" may be used for this task
Required: Please include your "two truths and a lie" when you post

5.1 -- Go West!
Help Thread
In Chinese mythology, the White Tiger is the mythological guardian of the west. Read a book set in the Western Hemisphere. If the book is set in multiple locations, at least half of the action must take place in the Western Hemisphere in order for the book to count. For the purposes of this task, we will consider any country on this .
Required: If not obvious from the GRs description, explain how your book choice fits the task when you post.
5.2 -- It's In Their Genes
Help Thread
White tigers are not albinos; they are created by two recessive genes. Recessive genes must be inherited in pairs and the traits are relatively rare. Read a book that has a pair of one of the least common letters in the English language--G, Y, P, B, V, K, J, X, Q, Z -- in the title/subtitle and author name. Since recessive genes come in pairs, the title/subtitle/author name combo may only have 2 of the uncommon letter; no more, no less.
So these books would work:
Edge Of Hunger by Rhyannon Byrd (2 Gs in title or 2 Ys in author's name)
I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak (2 Ks in author's name)
Parasite Rex : Inside the Bizarre World of Nature's Most Dangerous Creatures by Carl Zimmer (2 Zs in subtitle and author's name)
But these books would NOT work:
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver (only 1 G, 1P, and 1 K and too many Bs)
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (only 1 B and 1 Z, but 3 Ks)
Required: State the uncommon letter you are using when you post.
5.3 -- Here Kitty, Kitty
Help Thread
Read a book that has a white tiger or any other large or small cat on the cover.
Required: Include the cover in your completed task post.
5.4 -- Spring Up, Fall Down
Help Thread
Fall, our theme, and spring, our season are both nouns and verbs. Read a book with a word in the title or subtitle that can be both a noun and a verb. Here's a list to help: Plural and possessive nouns as well as those with "-ing" added to the end will be accepted. Verbs in past tense will also be accepted, but no other variations.
Required: Identify the word that can be used as both a noun and a verb.
5.5 -- Spring Chicken
Help Thread
Read a YA book. The genre "Young Adult" must appear on the book's main GRs page.
5.6 -- Hope Springs Eternal
Help Thread
Hope springs eternal means to continue to hope even in the face of certain disappointment. Read a book by an author that has disappointed you you in the past, but who you are willing to give another chance.
5.7 -- Someone to Fall Back On
Help Thread
Read a book by a favorite author; one that rarely, if ever, disappoints.
5.8 -- Cinco de Mayo
Help Thread
Read a book that is #5 in a series, as identified on GRs OR read a book that a GRs friend rated 5 stars. Required: If using the series option, the book must be identified on GRs as book #5 in the series. If using the GRs friend option, you must provide a link to the friend's shelves or to their review when you post.
5.9 -- Roll With It
Help Thread
Set the to roll 1 die. Subtract the number you roll from the year 2013 and read a book originally published in that year. For example, if you roll a 1, you would read a book originally published in 2012. If you roll a 2, you would read a book originally published in 2011, etc. Required: State the number you rolled in your post.
5.10 -- Attention Grabber
Help Thread

Required: Post the sentence when you claim the task.
