Round II - Tower Teams Read-a-Thon
~Rules, FAQ’s & How To’s~
 Book Advantage
Once a month the mods will set a inter-team challenge with a book advantage prize. This number will count for all purposes as a book read and will be added to the team’s total.
Example of book advantage:

 Team’s Page Goal
How to check the number of pages read
On the profile page choose stats

Then select the radio button pages

The only way to keep count is to check the number of pages before the start of the Read-a-Thon week and at the end. The difference will be the total of pages read
Participants should avoid tagging any books the 2 hours prior the start of the read-a-thon and the 2 hours after the end of the read-a-thon.
Be realistic. If you are only capable of reading one/two books a week, unless we're talking about Les Miserables or The Game of Thrones, don't set a 1000 pages goal. On the other hand, if you are a speed reader a 500 pages goal seems rather low.
Minimum page goal per member: 600 pages - average of 50 pages a day
For members with Challenge Goals 50 books or less minimum page goal will be 300 pages.
Only pages from books marked as read count.
Goal Posting
By team captains on RaT page thread. Tell us the name of participants and their page goal.
 Mini-Challenges & Games
*Only one Mini-Challenge & Game allowed per team so give us your best shot Participation
*Team's Mini-Challenge & Game suggestion must be posted by one of the Team Captains/Co-Captains till the beginning of the Read-a-Thon May 1st PDT 8:00 AM (BST 4PM). After that it will not be rewarded with the 5 points even if the mods decided to use it during the event
*When creating a Mini-Challenge & Game:- It has to be fun and quick. We want to take a break of reading BUT we don't want to keep people from reading*Acceptable Ideas:
- No aditional reading implied.
Mini-Challenge #1: Over the Rainbow (*This is choose-a-book only, no reading included)
Build a rainbow with book covers.
Optional: build a rainbow with book covers from your actual bookshelf, then take a picture and post it on the thread.
Mini-Challenge #2: Leave your Mark
What do you use for bookmarks (whether you use them at all). Take a picture of your bookmarks (or what you use) and post them.
*What NOT to Do:

- Has an animal in the title of the book.
- Has an animal on the cover of the book.
- An animal plays a major role in the book.
- A main character is (or turns into) an animal.
*The team Captains must send them by PM to the mod account or to Sonia with the subject: "RaT Mini-Challenge"

Since we had not one but 5 winning teams, the prize will be 2 book advantage points per winning team.
Details on the
~Member's Questions~
1.What if team/goal is exceeded? does that give any extra points?
No. The main purpose of the RaT is to challenge yourself and make you exceed your goals. The points are just a bonus. Besides, the more you read, the more books your team will pile up.
2.In case not all members are participating in RaT, can they play those mini games/challenges and does that count for team points?
No. In order to win points you have to participate on the Read-a-thon.
3.For that read a book with a cover representing the color of the team does it have to be exactly team shade or it's enough to read blue cover?
Is enough to read blue cover. And it only has to be the predominant color.
4.Must the team captain's track the points and all of that, and then hand it over to the mods, or will the mods track that?
The mods will be posting & updating the progress and points, but you can keep track to double check.
We'll also going to ask the captains to keep track of the page numbers before the start of the RaT, again, to double check the results.
We want things to be as fair and transparent as possible.
5.Sorry but do all the pages count even if book started *ahead* of time or just the pages read between 5/1 and 5/11??
Yes. ŷ stats only count books/pages marked as read, so we're only validating the finishing date.
6. I just realised that members are going to have to match their book edition to the one that they are reading, in order to get an accurate page count. If there isn't a book that matches the one you have, the member or the captain will have to add the edition to GR. Am I correct? How lenient will you be with the pages? Must they all match perfectly, or if they're out by 10 pages is it okay?
They don't have to match perfectly. For instance if the kindle edition has no pages but the paperback does, and if you don't mind having a different edition then choose the paperback.
AMENDED: Please go to the Page Numbers, Just Page Numbers thread and post your edition that needs page number added - or where there is a conflict - and Lisa Kay will be glad to add/correct them according to GRs Librarian rules.
If LK is am unable to do that, she will at least make a ruling on the book, so you have a post for reference.
7.If our missing member doesnt show before May 1 will we have to still include her in the parts that have to do with all the member to get points or will the present team members that read a book (theme or cover) count towards the points including the points that need all the members of the group to get?
The RaT isn't mandatory. Only the team members that decided to set a goal and participate count.
For example, if only 4 members of a team are participating then if 2 members read a book that matches the theme or cover it counts as 50% of the team --> the team gets 30 points.
8.Mini-Challenges & Games - As done on the previous read-a-thons we'll come out with some fun stuff to shoot the breeze. An extra 5 points can be earned by suggesting a mini-challenge & game
Explain more, please.
It could be a question or a cover hunt or something fun to do, like "post a picture of wild animal"
Did you see the examples on message #2?
You can also see Example from round I
Each team can come up with one mini-challenge idea for earning 5 more points. Then the mod will post the mini-challenges during the RaT, and members can post their answers/choices.
Ahhhhhhh ! So, it's basically a Q & A?
Yes. Or a cover hunt. I thought about trying to do a scrabble or a cross puzzle or a riddle thing, but never had the time to make it doable.
Something fun. It can't be time consuming, we're trying to motivate reading, not keeping readers away from books :)
9.For the read-a-thon does it matter about the books page count? Like can we read novella's and books under 160 pages for this since we are only calculating pages read?
Yes, you can. But don't tag it on the challenge's shelf, because is not eligible to the challenge, OK?
10. Do I have to make a fix list of books and as I read them I 1. Do I have to make a fix list of books and as I read them I can add or change the list/page count till 8 th of May
No. You can add them as you go. We only need know after you read them which is the book for color and theme.
11. I can start reading books prior the date or I have to wait 1. of May at 5 pm to follow the rules. I mean if GR doesn't have time but only start date lot's of people will start reading before time is on
Yes, you can. I'm aware of that loop. Since it benefits the slower readers, or the readers that don't like to start a new book before finishing the current, I let it stay. The main goal of the read-a-thon is to challenge yourself so I'm hoping that at least the majority starts the book reading close to the date.
12. Do I post books/pages that I plan to read on my page and this page both or I leave it to moderators of my group.
You can leave the participant posting here for the team captains. During the read-a-thon you can post in both threads if you like.
13. What if I make a lits with more books I can read but I red a quote- does my club loose points?
No. Posting and changing lists will not count for points. If you see the goal is too high or too low, you can always change it till the 8th May.
14.Just to double check, will books less than 160 pages count for the theme/colour challenges or only towards overall pages?
Yes they count. You can even choose short-stories with 20 pages - as long as the cover exists on goodreads - to color and theme. The page number is not mandatory.
However, since they don't count for the tower team's challenge, my advise is, choose those if you want or must, but read an eligible book too :o)

Oh, Alexa poses a very good question!
*gives her captain's whip a side-eye view and ponders how much use it will get at the start of May* **snicker**

Good point, I'll think about it

Yikes!
Not the two hours prior the RaT and after. I need those :)

1. In case not all members are participating in RaT, can they play those mini games/challenges and does that count for team points?
2. For that read a book with a cover representing the color of the team does it have to be exactly team shade or it's enough to read blue cover?
I know I had more questions when I first read it, but they escaped me :(

So tempted to tie up Oo and stick her in a closet so she can't read during the week, only on her weekend, lol!
Great questions, Tea! I'm so glad everyone else has the forethought to ask these. I'm just too giddy with prospects of themes and looking for books with blue covers to use for this, lol.

#2 Sure thing! The more the merrier. Keep the goals as realistic as possible. For those who did RaT before they have a better notion of what they can or can't do. And remember, the time frame is 11 days not a week.

Reading start date? Does book needs to be started in that time period to count? Or just finished? :D (I need to know should I stall with that big-pager or not :D)

I'm signing up for 2000 pages minimum. About a month's reading in 11 days. Consider the gauntlet thrown!

Hey Lisa Kay, do you think you should have negative point for those who set their goals too high and can't keep up? :o)

There is no need to defeat the Kraken. Harpies fly, Kraken don't.

I can honestly say, I never would have anticipated that I'd be in "reading wars" ever in my life, lol. This is fun, hilarious, entertaining and inspiring all at once. Bookworms are the best!

No, the start date doesn't matter. Since we will base y«the page counting on the GR stats is only the finishing date that has to be between the 1st and the 11th.

Nah.
I don't think those who read over should get any extra points, either. Too much strategy there.
However, I do think those who accurately predict their page count should get something. LOL!

And if we think about it, if we exceed the goal, we already are increasing the book total, so no need to enhance it.

EDT Eastern Daylight Time? If google is right, for you is now 4:10 PM?

The RaT isn't mandatory. Only the team members that decided to set a goal and participate count.
For example, if only 4 members of a team are participating then if 2 members read a book that matches the theme or cover it counts as 50% of the team --> the team gets 30 points.
Does this makes sense?

EDT is Eastern Daylight Time. When I tried to find the PST I was directed that it is PDT because we are in Daylight Savings time. My time is 4:19 pm now.

Me too. Although Portugal did that one year - our government decided we should be on European Central Time - IT WAS AWFUL.
