I'll be honest, I really struggled through this last section. I swear, I remember reading this in high school and really liking this book, but everything after they get back to "society" is so much philosophy and debate that it became overwhelmingly tedious and boring. I was so glad to get to the end!
***SPOILERS***
I would assume his fate is that he killed himself, I think the impression given is that he hung himself because he couldn't escape from this society. He sought solitude, yet everyone came to gawk at him. That, or it is because he has completely lost hope of all humanity, that there is no one left to think, therefore no reason to continue living. Plus, by doing so, he is robbing them of their spectacle. I'm probably way oversimplifying it, but I think that was a lot of it.
Sorry, normally I have more to add, but my brain was just so fried by the time this one was done...

I don't think there is any doubt that he hung himself. I think his reason might be more uncertain.
More certain is how the world goes on after him: just as it did before, taking no notice that he ever existed.
