I love Nero Wolfe books! One of my all time favorites; they have a little of everything - eccentric genius detective, handsome sidekick, interesting secondary characters (Theo the orchid tender and especially Fritz the chef)... and I like to read about the gourmet food that's served. With an intriguing mystery thrown in the books are very fun.

message 417: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9831 comments I finished The Redbreast, a Harry Hole mystery set in Norway. The book is structured so we see events during WW II (Norwegian soldiers fighting for Germany) reverberating up to the present and becoming entangled with skinheads and illegal arms traffic. Good book 4 stars.

message 418: by Renee (new)

Renee (rys00) | 252 comments Closed the pages of Hour of the Red God by Richard Crompton this week. Super good: reminders of the 1998 US Embassy bombing in Kenya and then the violence of the 2007 Kenyan elections and oh, by the way, but most important to our hero there's a 'working girl' murdered, a suspicious mega-church, and, of course, the requisite amount of government corruption.

Oh, and by the way, it is also a good story, well told and great mystery.

message 419: by David (new)

David Williams (davidiwilliams) Finally starting Hidden Order by Brad Thor. Waited for the weekend because I know I won't want to put it down.

message 423: by Julie (new)

Julie (gpangel) | 148 comments I just finished three really great mysteries.Der 7. Tag Der 7. Tag by Nika Lubitsch - This is the German cover. It's called The 7th Day and is in English, but I can't find the link for it anymore. I was free in the kindle store for brief time, you might check and see if it's still free. This was a really good book.
I also read Artifact (Jaya Jones Treasure Hunt Mystery, #1) by Gigi Pandian Artifact This is a cozy mystery that is due out in late August.
Then I read Keep No Secrets Keep No Secrets by Julie Compton - also really good.
I am now reading Bait by Karen Robards Bait

message 424: by Dottie (new)

Dottie Hall | 56 comments I know this is off the genre of mystery/thrillers, but I am currently reading Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness Brain on Fire My Month of Madness by Susannah Cahalan . I am unable to put this one down. It is a memoir and medical suspense story of a New York journalist's struggle with a rare and terrifying disease. Written so that the non medical person can understand, yet with enough interesting and realistic information for us medical personnel. Very good - the word 'gripping' keeps coming to mind. I'm about 40% done - can't wait to see how this turns out. Kinda like a House episode from the patients perspective. Still no diagnosis, I haven't read the full reviews so we shall see.

The broken arm reading marathon continued this week with Mad Dog & Englishman: A Mad Dog & Englishman Mystery, Before the Throne, The Pursuit of Love, Elegy for April, and Still Life With Murder. All entertaining and/or enlightening.

message 429: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9831 comments I finished Six Years by Harlan Coben, a mystery about a college teacher (Jake)whose girlfriend (Natalie)left him to marry someone else; at the wedding Natalie asks Jake to stay away from her. Six years later Jake sees Natalie's husband's obituary and decides he'll go to the funeral to get a peek at her. Of course Natalie has lots of secrets so this leads to huge trouble. The story was a little far-fetched but the book was okay. 3 stars for me.

Olivia "So many books--so little time."" | 831 comments I'm currently reading Eyes Wide Open by Andrew Gross. It's about a doctor whose mentally ill nephew jumped off a cliff. So far it has been an interesting read.

Recently I finished Black and White and Dead All Over by John Darnton. It's a mystery about a hard-nosed editor w2ho's found murdered, who was so unpopular anyone could have done it. I gave it 4 stars.

Sean Peters | 155 comments What a great book!!

S.J Bolton - Dead Scared

I was given this book, and I had not heard of this author.

A British author S.J Bolton, Sharon Bolton. A great find and very pleased this book was given to me, now reading another of her books.

This book has great strong characters, a great story, a gripping plot, strong and tense all the way and building to a great final few chapters.

I do highly recommend this book and author.

You will be hooked, and you will be guessing all the way !

Enjoy

regards

Sean

message 443: by Sharon (last edited Jul 24, 2013 05:40AM) (new)

Sharon Michael | 674 comments Just finished The K Street Killer - Jim McGill Novels - Book 3 by Joseph Flynn which is the third book in the James McGill series. Loved the first two books ... 5 star reads.

This one would have been as well, but unfortunately it was a classic cliffhanger ending, complete with people whose lives are in jeopardy, a Waco-style standoff and a killer still on the loose. I despise this and unfortunately it is getting to be more and more of a common *ploy* with authors.

Book 4 is already published ... in two separate parts ... and I suspect I'll get to the end of those two books and there will be still another cliffhanger ending.

I'm done ... gave this one a 1-star rating and will not be reading any more of this series.

message 444: by Dottie (new)

Dottie Hall | 56 comments finished Brain on Fire My Month of Madness by Susannah Cahalan This book was very good. It did lag some towards the end, as it was winding up, but it was still a great story. I am a nurse and have a soft spot for anything neuro since I personally had a brain tumor, so I know I am not totally unbiased, but all in all I felt it was a well written story that really captured your attention from the beginning.

Once again having trouble figuring out what to read next....I have lots in my tbr list but none that are calling out to me. Will keep searching. Happy reading everyone

message 445: by Nigel (new)

Nigel Bird (nigelbird) | 59 comments Ian Ayris still has the capacity to surprise me with his work even though I’m fairly familiar with it and feel like I know where he’s coming from. Nothing about is writing is predictable and nobody else (to my knowledge) is writing anything quite like it.
I’ve loved his short stories and really liked Abide With Me; One Day In The Life caps them all to my mind.
Jason Dean is a hard man and a bit of a thug who has started to reflect upon his life. He’s very well read after years of trying to better himself. On this particular day, he has a few jobs to do for his boss a couple of money collections and a murder, which is the outline of the plot. However, you get so much more that plot from Ian. He quotes writers of great stature and then interprets them in a language that makes complete sense of the world, making literary wisdoms wonderfully accessible. He uses poetry to emphasise a point and then goes on to write phrases and paragraphs that are as profound as any poem.
This book’s beautiful. It’s tragic and moving and it’s very special indeed. Reading it has inspired me in some way, something relating to living and to writing I suspect.
The publishers proclaim this 'the Best Of British'; in this case, I'd say they're absolutely right to do so.
Buy it.

This is actually the first Laura Lippman book I ever read. I really enjoyed it and it had a nice twist at the end. After this I read And When She Was Good by Laura Lippman (another good one) and now I have I'd Know You Anywhere by Laura Lippman on the wish list at my library.

I liked Up Country, Plum Island and The Lion's Game. Also read Wild Fire but didn't enjoy that one as much. If you are a stickler for reading in sequence he has some Paul Brenner books and a John Corey series.
