I think I am going to get The Bell Jar again. Someone gave it to me and I thought that I could trust someone with it and I never got it back!

message 52: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) Yes I read it and loved it but THAT book meant a lot to me so even though I will never retrieve the original I would at least like to buy that particular edition.

message 53: by Yvette (new)

Yvette (yjacobs99) Recently purchased Austenland by Shannon Hale. Looks really good!

message 54: by [deleted user] (new)

This afternoon I picked up The Colour by Rose Tremain second-hand. I really enjoyed The Road Home so fingers crossed.

This is such a fun read! Loved the idea of visiting a place like Austenland.

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) Went to Borders today to pick up a copy of Sense and Sensibility for the group read. They had a copy of everything Austen ever wrote except S&S. They did however have a copy of Complete Illustrated Novels by Jane Austen. Emma, Lady Susan, Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility. at $25. With the 30% coupon and the $5 in Borders Rewards that I had, I got it for $12.50. Now I'm set for all of Austen Autumn and a little more as well.

message 57: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) I just love those Borders coupons and Rewards!

The 19th Wife A Novel - because people rave about it.

Women Talking Dirty - I absolutely loved the film.

message 60: by Lindz (new)

Lindz (miss_bovary00) I really liked the 19th wife, like a really good episode of big love but with more flashbacks. The history of the Mormon Church is interesting. Once you get over the whole ick factor of the polygamy thing, it is a fantastic novel, well I thought it was :).

message 61: by Christina Stind (new)

Christina Stind I just got 'Dragons of the Hourglass Mage' from the Dragonlance series - looking forward to reading that! And the two first volume of what looks like a very interesting fantasy trilogy - The Shadow of the Apt (by Adrian Tchaikovsky), third volume was sold out unfortunately.

Thanks, Lindsay :-)

message 63: by Lindz (new)

Lindz (miss_bovary00) Your welcome :)

I just bought, the Leopard by Lampedusa, Crime and Punishment and The Gargoyle by Davidson

message 64: by [deleted user] (new)

Oops, quoted wrong person. I'm still not very techno-savvy :P

~~
Just won a £25 book voucher. The problem with GR is that I've got too much choice now, too many unread books swilling around my mind. I'm not sure what I'll buy but it'll be nice to not feel guilty about spending real money on what is essentially-dare I say it-trivial.

message 65: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) Bought the following recently (when I should be staying far away from the bookstore, lol):

- Anna Politkovskaya's Putin's Russia Life in a Failing Democracy
- Paul Buchan's The 39 Steps
- Michael Ignatieff's Blood and Belonging Journeys into the New Nationalism

Li, is this the 39 Steps that was recently adapted to the screen? With Rupert Penry-Jones

Yup it is (the Rupert Penry-Jones adaptation was how I was introduced to the book) =D

message 68: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Elizabeth I agree with every comment that says something tot he effect of I should really just never enter a bookstore. Because even if I enter saying okay I'm just looking, you know i just leave with a bag full of books and an empty wallet.

Anyway, recently I've bought:

The Grave Maurice by Martha Grimes
Tigerheart by Peter David
Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
Fablehaven by Brendan Muil
Princess Ben by Murdock
And Both Were Young by Madeleine L'Engle

I feel like there were even a couple more, but you know I can't even remember! Terrible, huh? :)

message 69: by Silver (new)

Silver I went to one of my favorite bookstores today to trade in some old books, and here are the new ones I got.

The World According to Garp by John Irving
Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas by Tom Robbins
Light Before Day by Christopher Rice

I know, I'm so excited about reading it. My boyfriend says it's very good, and that his style of writing changed from his previous works. (in a good way)

message 73: by [deleted user] (new)

Just bought Howards End by E.M. Forster and When Will There Be Good News? A Novel by Kate Atkinson.

I love buying books in charity shops, they're cheap, they're nearly always in paperback and you're helping a cause. My friends get sniffy but IMO buying them new at Waterstones is a last resort.

Maybe try something by David Mitchell. He should be somewhat similar to Murakami, but still different. I think Cloud Atlas is his most famous work. I have Ghostwritten on my shelf and am looking forward to reading it.

message 79: by stormhawk (new)

stormhawk Books are my crack ... I just downloaded a batch of free or cheap classics to my Kindle including Dracula, Frankenstein, and a collection of all the books and poems by the Bronte family.

Push is a very quick read and will be out soon in the movies (independent film) It's disturbing but yet I couldn't stop reading it. Finished it in a day!

message 88: by Wild for Wilde (new)

Wild for Wilde (wildforwilde) | 17 comments I can't wait to buy Palin's autobiography and hear what she has to say about everything.

message 89: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) Ok I got a B&N gift card and this week they are giving member prices on all their books so I brought:

-The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins
-Catching Fire - Suzanne Collins
-Until I Find You - John Irving
-People of the Book - Geraldine Brooks

message 90: by Kristine (new)

Kristine (foreveryearning) | 72 comments I won a $200 B&N Gift Card from Sourcebooks over the weekend for their Georgette Heyer receipt promotion back in September, so guess where I went today? lol I was hoping I'd be able to control myself until around Christmas to use it, but oh well, I was craving a peppermint white chocolate mocha from the cafe so I couldn't help but spend just a little bit more :)

I bought the following:
The Woman in White - Wilkie Collins
Outlander - Diana Gabaldon
Shutter Island - Dennis Lehane
American Gods - Neil Gaiman

I also finished Push very quickly. That night that I bought it :) Looking forward to the movie.

message 92: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) Oh I just have to see the movie.

message 93: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) Push A Novel was a very quick (and good) read. I definitely want to see the movie.

message 94: by galya (new)

galya Gave myself a little present, and bought The Virgin Suicides, Middlesex, Gone With The Wind and The Sirens of Titan. :)
Strand is awesome.

message 95: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Elizabeth I <3 the Strand.

message 96: by galya (new)

galya Sarah wrote: "I <3 the Strand."

For me the $1 sales suck. When I don't have enough money, I fin a shelf full of books, but when I do have some money to waste, I don't find anything. :(

message 97: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Elizabeth I feel exactly the same way.

message 98: by galya (new)

galya I wish they also had some discounts and stuff. Although teh books are relatively cheaper than Borders and B&N, sometimes I can't afford even that, and I love books. :)

message 99: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Elizabeth I just love walking around there, it's like going back in time or something. When I get my own house, I tell everyone that I'm going to have a library like the one in Beauty and the Beast. Hahaha <3

message 100: by Kristine (new)
