Continualknowledge | 52 comments Just wondering if folks had any recommendations for June? Or if there is a particular theme you wanted to focus on?

Brown Girl Reading How about the Second Life of Samuel Tyne by Esi Edugyan or Ghana Must Go by Taiye Selasi?

Felicity (happyblackgirl) | 45 comments I was thinking The warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson.

Continualknowledge | 52 comments How about a poll of two books, books focused on the African continent and a nonfiction book.

Deidre I don't think Ghana Must Go is on the Clutch 100 list; however, Literary Fiction by African American group is currently reading Ghana Must Go.

Brown Girl Reading Oh sorry I'll take a closer look at the list. Your idea is good though.

Rakel | 24 comments Too funny. I'm currently reading Ghana Must Go for another book club. It's an interesting read. It'd make a great June selection.

Crystal (mslibrarylady) | 21 comments I'm about 100 pages from finishing The Warmth of Other Suns...it's a good one.

I ordered Ghana Must Go for our library and we cannot find it...ugh...hope it hasn't been stolen.

Continualknowledge | 52 comments So let's go with Warmth of the Other Suns for this month and we can choose an African themed one as well. I will set up a poll for it.

Kanita Carington-McDonald (kanitacaringtonmcdonald) | 31 comments Hello everyone!

Jumping in the conversation a bit late. Like the suggestions...Warmth of Other Suns for sure as non-fiction, right? Just wondering if I overlooked a poll for the African themed fiction title for this month. If we are still considering 2 fiction selections, may I suggest either of the following: The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives by Lola Shoneyin or On Black Sisters Street A Novel by Chika Unigwe ? Came across them while perusing the list. They both look interesting.

Sandra (sandras_bookshelf) | 1 comments So do we have a decision on the next book for June? Are we reading "The Warmth of Other Suns" or something else?

Continualknowledge | 52 comments We are definitely reading The Warmth of Other Suns and let's go with The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives (it is a great book). If folks would rather read another book set in Africa, please let us know. My apologies for not getting the poll up.

message 17: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnavance1) | 5 comments we're reading/discussing both?
please pardon my ignorance. I don't know how this works.

Hi Donna, no ignorance whatsoever, some months we read and discuss two books when there is enough interest in two different books. Some individuals read only one book and some read both books, it's just a matter of what interests you. Sometimes we like to pair a fiction book with a nonfiction book, for greater flexibility and interest.

Donna (donnavance1) | 5 comments oh, ok. i am on board now, and will begin my reading. thank you.

Camilla Lyons | 1 comments I'm new here.. So have we decided what book we are reading?

message 21: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnavance1) | 5 comments hi camilla,
as i understand, we are reading The Warmth of Other Suns and The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives. I have begun reading the latter.

message 22: by Kanita (new)

Kanita Carington-McDonald (kanitacaringtonmcdonald) | 31 comments Hi Camilla! Welcome!!
And Hello to ALL! :)
I'm glad I was able to get copies of both books at my local library. Though I'm quickly finishing another book now, I "plan" on reading both selections this month and joining in on the discussions. We'll see how that goes! Anyone else attempting to read or already one or the other of our June titles or both?

Continualknowledge | 52 comments I've already read Baba Segi's Wives and will be reading Warmth of other Suns. We usually start the discussion around mid month.

Kanita Carington-McDonald (kanitacaringtonmcdonald) | 31 comments Hello All! Just wondering if anyone has any ideas for our July selection? Any thoughts on a particular theme for July? During a quick glance of the Clutch List, some books caught my attention. I noticed some children and young adult titles on the list. Do these genres interest anyone for July? Two titles I noticed were

The Shimmershine Queens by Camille Yarbrough by Camille Yarbrough and One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia by Rita Williams-Garcia.

Of course, I'm open to anything. Thoughts?

Continualknowledge | 52 comments Kanita I'm open to either book. Maybe a quick read would generate more discussion and participation.

Kanita Carington-McDonald (kanitacaringtonmcdonald) | 31 comments You know, I'm thinking the same thing now that I consider it. I'm still reading The Warmth of Other Suns along with a few other titles I have slated for July. So a quick, easy read suits me just fine. And, as for which book, I don't have a preference either.

message 27: by Kanita (new)

Kanita Carington-McDonald (kanitacaringtonmcdonald) | 31 comments How about One Crazy Summer? That is...since we are officially in July and if we are agreeing on a children's/young adult genre for July. It has lots of good reviews and awards. It's more recently written and should be readily available at public libraries for quick request and pick-up for everyone. Just a thought. Again, I'm flexible.

Continualknowledge | 52 comments Sounds great Kanita. Can you start the thread for the July read?

message 29: by Kanita (new)

Kanita Carington-McDonald (kanitacaringtonmcdonald) | 31 comments No problem. I sure can.
