Josie (maid_marian) | 126 comments If everyone looks like they'll finish all the tasks really early, you could always add some half-way (big-pointer) tasks!

message 52: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen | 229 comments Do the big pointers! Do it! :)

Josie (maid_marian) | 126 comments Tahleen wrote: "Ugh for the one I've tried to read but never finished that would have to be Little Women. I've tried to read it TWICE and couldn't get through it..."

I found it very didactic, and preachy, but I did manage to finish it...I liked the movie with Christian Bale better!

message 54: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen | 229 comments Who wouldn't love a movie with Christian Bale I ask you. Certainly not me.

message 55: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) I've never read Little Women (tried once in high school and stopped about twenty pages in), but I absolutely adore the movie. Winona Ryder is great in it (and Christian Bale is pretty yummy).

Tahleen | 229 comments Does he play Laurie?

And yes again!

message 59: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) you ladies back off :P I call Christian Bale! LOL.

message 60: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) Hey, if this is for three months...
Read a book that takes place during the revelution.
Read a book that that takes place at Christmas time (Christmas in July)
Read a book that takes place somewhere you have gone on vacation during the summer.
Read a book that takes place during WW2 (VE Day).
Read a Harry Potter book (movie comes out in July)
Read a group read.
Read a book from a genre you don't normally read.
Read a book where the monarchy is the main characters (for Victoria Day).

These are just a few ideas... I hope that there are a few that people like... of course, all books would have to be YA.

message 61: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) Read a YA book that is told from the POV of a father (Father's Day) or a son/daughter who talks a lot about their father.

Read a YA book about the Boston Tea Party, Revolutionary War, founding fathers, or the writing of the Declaration of Independence (Independence Day)

Read a YA book from a series written by a woman about a woman (Janet Evanovich - Stephanie Plum)...(I don't know if she is YA or not. I was just using it as an example)...(Woman's Equality Day)

Read a YA book about vampires or werewolves.

Read a YA book that is wholesome.

Read a YA mystery.

Read a YA book that has a story within a story.

Read a YA book that deals with the coming of age.

Read a YA book that has to do with senior citizen(s).

Read a YA book where the main character is a child.

Read a YA book written by a man (Walter Dean Myers, Robert Corimer, Scott Westerfield...)

Read a YA trilogy

Read an award-winning YA author

message 63: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Can I ask are we allowed to listen to YA books via audios or do we have to read them?

message 64: by Samantha McNulty (new)

Samantha McNulty Read a YA book you would not usually read

message 65: by Jamie (last edited Apr 30, 2009 05:47AM) (new)

Jamie I was just thinking that it might be a good idea to not put together a really big list for the reading challenge here, since we are limited to YA books. I'm not sure about the rest of you, but I'm still planning on reading some adult books this summer. I think Laura's idea of having 20 tasks or so sounds reasonable, though. (Maybe 30 would work if there aren't a lot of multiple-book tasks?) To finish Cynthia's challenge, you'd have to read 47 books (which is pretty much impossible for me in 3 months!), but it's not difficult to work in a good mixture of YA and adult books there, you know?

message 66: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Fiona wrote: "Can I ask are we allowed to listen to YA books via audios or do we have to read them?"

Listening is absolutely allowed, Titch.

Yeah, I totally agree... I am just planning on mixing as many books as possible for both challenges and then picking and choosing the other books that don't fit in both.

message 68: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Kathryn - I'm planning on doing the same thing. I hope we'll be able to overlap a good portion of our books! I think I'll keep my goal on the lower end for the Summer Challenge, though.

message 69: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Hey we can even peek in on the Summer Challenge brainstorming in TNBBC and pluck some ideas - I won't tell.

message 70: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Perfect timing!

message 71: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Thanks hon, glad to hear I can listen to books as well.

I can read the last 3 Malorie Blackman books, listen & read Harry Potter books and read the Twilight series.

message 72: by [deleted user] (new)

Didn't someone mention prizes? If you don't do so many challenge items, will it just be who finishes first then?

message 73: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I was going to do 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes, but I'm still evaluating....prize will be an Amazon gift certificate though for the winner(s).

I'm thinking 20 tasks. I'd like to get it up by end of day so everyone can start May 1!

message 74: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Let me know what I need to do and will see what I can do.

message 75: by [deleted user] (new)

So if more than 3 people finish the tasks, it will be the first ones who finish right? I don't read as fast as most on here lol...

message 76: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Yeah you got it Linda.

message 77: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Although the number of pages read, I believe, may come into play there as well....still ruminating.

message 78: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (affie) | 468 comments I absolutely love fairy tale retellings, so a task idea could be to read an original fairy tale (like The Brother's Grimm, or Hans Christian Anderson) and then read a retelling of the same fairy tale.

message 79: by [deleted user] (new)

Ohh Ashley, I like that one!!

message 80: by Jamie (new)

Jamie That's a great idea, Ashley. And very appropriate for this group, I believe.

message 81: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Fiona wrote: "yeah, then you could read Fire and hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones ;)"

Whats that the re-telling of Fi?

message 82: by Ashley (last edited Apr 30, 2009 11:47AM) (new)

Ashley (affie) | 468 comments There's a couple of Tam Lin retellings out there. You'd be suprised at how many retellings of fairy tales there are when you start looking, both common fairy tales, and the more obscure. I love them.
I went through a... phase... a few months ago where that is like all I read. I stopped reading so many to participate in the Spring Challenge, but I want to go back and read some more.
I love them! I'm glad others seem to like the idea too!

message 83: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) Laura, I'm so excited for you to post the challenge!

message 84: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I'm so wishing I could finish it up!

Thanks, Allison.....

*works feverishly*

message 85: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I'll letcha know Fiona - hopefully soon I'll be PM'ing it to ya.

message 86: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (trvljunkie) | 7 comments Ooh I've always wanted to do a challenge, but find out that I'm always a little too late...I'm excited to join!!

I have a few ideas..(sorry if these are repeats)

How about choose a YA novel from an awards list..for example..the Printz

Read a book a Historical fiction YA novel

Read a book from a series

I like reading a 5 star from a fellow member's bookshelf

hmm...That's all I can think of for now =)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) I like the "read a five-star choice from another member's bookshelf" choice myself.
