Laura (apenandzen) Me too! Rotten kids breed nosy moms!

message 352: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 390 comments Yep, those were "THE" books to read "back then." LOL

message 353: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments I am soooo right there with ya, Laura! If I dont have time to read them, I get online and "research" or get advice from others. Plus my sister and her friend will read them for me! My daughter reads faster than I do... she devours books.

message 354: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) You have to now. I usually pre-skim. That catches most of the questionable ones. Usually.

message 355: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I read all those horrid V.C Andrews books too. I am also a reader or skimmer as time permits. I'm not really into censorship, but I want to know what questions to expect.

Rotten kids breed nosy moms!

Good one Laura.

message 356: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) I also read V.C. Andrew books too. LOL

message 357: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Another V.C. Andrews fan here (well, I was 15 years ago or whenever). I don't think I'd appreciate them now like I did then.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments Oooh... I see! It reminded me of the aliens' names in The Host...

message 361: by Cassie (new)

Cassie (cassielo) Is this an open challenge? I've just joined the group, and I have never participated in a challenge before (or actually even heard of one until now), so I'm a bit confused...

message 362: by Laura (last edited May 07, 2009 12:33PM) (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Sure, C! Never too late to join us. We're only about 5 days into it.

(Love your av, by the way)

message 363: by Cassie (new)

Cassie (cassielo) Thanks! Just a quick question, are re-reads considered okay in any category except the ones that specifically say that the book should be one you've never read before, or only the ones that say re-reads are okay?

message 364: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Re-reads are ok for any task that does not specifically prohibit them, but each book can only be used once in the challenge. No double-dipping! ;)

message 366: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) Because I have no willpower, today's trip to the library has disrupted the list I made for this challenge. I'm not even going to bother re-posting it, since I can't figure out how to rearrange it. I'm just going to read and fill in tasks as I go.

Anyone else having this issue?

message 367: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 390 comments Yes! I decided that I'm going to take it one section at a time. I change my mind way too much to make a big list and then stick to it. I'm definitely going to read Howl's Moving Castle but I have to change the category I was going to use it for. I can see that this is going to be evolving all the time.

message 368: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) Heather wrote: "I have a hard time getting into books if I'm not in the right frame of mind for them. Anyone else have this problem?"

I definitely do. That's part of my problem now. I have some books from the library that I do want to read, but I'm not in the mood for them right now. So I keep checking out new books but I will eventually have to get to the others.

message 369: by Liz (new)

Liz Hey guys, I'm interested in joining and was wondering if it was too late or not. I'm also doing the college students official 2009 school year challenge, and I was wondering if it's okay for us to use books for other challenges in other groups for this one.

message 370: by [deleted user] (last edited May 08, 2009 04:46PM) (new)

I don't think its ever too late to join. You can use books from other challenges and re-reads are okay too, but you can only use each book once on this challenge. Can't re-read a book a second time and use it for two different tasks. Also, not like the college students official 2009 school year challenge, we are also counting page numbers (using the first listing on GR page number for each book/audio book/ebook, etc. read)

Welcome to the challenge!

message 371: by Liz (last edited May 08, 2009 05:34PM) (new)

Liz Woohoo! I'll try to start getting my titles in soon:) On which note, I just read Coraline and saw the film. Could I count that for read a book and see the film? I don't remember exactly which challenge it is. At any rate, although it's a close call, I preferred the film ebcause I thought that visually it was absolutely brilliant. I thought the artists did an amazing job of bringing the story to life. I also really liked the addition of the charcter Wybe.
Oh, and for the record, I understand Coraline was out in February in the states, but in the UK it is only just out.

message 372: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes you can count Coraline as long as you read more than half of it after May 1st, which is when the challenge started.

Alexis (alexabexis) Where should we discuss the books we've read for the tasks that require it? I just finished Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson and boy, was that intense. I wrote up a full review, but I don't know that the book deserves a whole topic. Should I start one for the author? The issue? (Eating disorders.) Or for the task - books you think young people should read?

message 375: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Alexis, I like the "books you think people should read" option. :)

Hi Alexis, you're welcome to discuss it here, but I really would like it if you added a thread called 'books young people should read' (or whatever you'd like to call it). I think that's a fabulous idea, and both our older and younger members may really find it useful.

Alexis (alexabexis) Hi Liz! I recently read The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray. Have you ever read anything by that author? I think he has a really unique style. I'm reading another one of his books for the same challenge.

And sure, I'll start a topic for "books young people should read" to discuss 20.2 and anything else that comes up.

Same here...I remember watching it with my neighborhood friends and going to the store with my godmother to buy the movie, but I never ever read the book...I bought it yesterday, so I'll finally read it!!!

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments I think I remember seeing it, but my books are in disarray since I moved out.. my fiance put them on the bookshelves by size... *shakes head* I told him I appreciated him unpacking but I'm a librarian for gods sake... I still haven't had the energy to put them in some sort of genre and author order. That's going to be one of my summer projects.

Hey, Alexis! This is actually my first book by this author. My boyfriend recommended it to me so I'm borrowing his copy. I'm so glad he's a reader as well...once he gets his 20,000 word MA dissertation written in Septemer, I'm getting him on GR! I keep organizing my bookshelves to procrastinate...

Kristen- LOL! You're library doesn't organize books from smallest to biggest? ;)

I see some people are having problems with the 1st book by a new author catergory (I forget the number). My library has a new release shelf, and most book stores do too. I got lucky on my first shot and found The Third Eye which was published last year. This would also work for the other culture requirement (southern Asia), and maybe even the fairy tale retold. Hope this helps!

message 385: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments I have two other suggestions for the new author book, both fantasy - Wondrous Strange or Lament The Faerie Queen's Deception. Both of these books came out in the last year and are the first by these authors. :)

message 386: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) Laura,

I'm sorry that I have one more change to make. It is already changed on my list. 20.3 is switching from The Wizard of Oz to One-Way Ticket to Kansas.

I do the same thing. And I keep picking them up and just sort of balancing them in my hand, like that's gonna help me decide. Interestingly enough, I am starting the Goose Girl next too.

Hey Kristen. I was born in 84 too, and I am just not finding anything I really am drawn to. Did you find a list or anything of books published in that year?

message 390: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments For task 25.1, do we have to pick a book that is listed in one of the discussions for that genre, or can we pick anything within the genre, listed or not?

message 391: by Liz (new)

Liz For re-read a book that we read when you were younger (5 point task), I want to re-read Little Women, but I only read an abridged version then so it wouldn't exactly be a true re-read. Would it still be acceptable?

message 392: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Misty, anything that you choose within the genre should be fine, since the task says that you can post a discussion topic or contribute to one already there.

Liz, that's fine. You should read the unabridged anyway... they are always so much better! :)

message 393: by Liz (new)

Liz I was very young at the time, and it was actually my grandmother who gave me the baridged copy. I remember really enjoying it so I'll be glad toread the real thing.

message 394: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yes! Little Women is one of my all time favorites. I'm re-reading it for this challenge too, and I can't wait. I love this story!

message 395: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) Misty wrote: "I was born in 84 too, and I am just not finding anything I really am drawn to."

I had the same problem with 83. I finally came up with Behind the Attic Wall, since I have a stripped copy of it, but I might go with something from 91, my brother's year. Seems like there were a lot more things I'd like to read that came out then.

message 396: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I got lucky, the first book that I found for 1982 was "Annie on my Mind" and I can't wait to read it!

message 397: by Sara (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments I hope you guys like Goose Girl... I loved that one. I couldn't find any 1983 books I was interested in. I have siblings born in 85, 90, and 93, so I'll probably look in that direction...

message 398: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) Sara, by having three siblings you've quadrupled the number of books you have to chose from. Score!

message 399: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 274 comments Another suggestion for the new YA author task is Savvy by Ingrid Law. I've had a copy sitting here for several months just waiting for me to get to it - since even before it won a Newbery Honor. So I'm excited this challenge is giving me an excuse to bump it up on my TBR list.

message 400: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Misty, what I did was go through my to-read bookshelf first and then if you go to some of our members bookshelves, I found some interesting ones as well. When you are looking at all of their books, click on the list view and you can sort it by publication date and find the years. Do you have siblings? I think we can use their birth years as well.
