This group is dedicated to reading some of the top rated books to be considered "well-read" today. You might have heard of Boxall's 1001 Books to Read Before You Die (for which there is another group dedicated already on GoodReads). This is the same premise, and indeed, the majority of our list appears on the Boxall's list. However, to many of us, the prospect of 1001 books is quite simply daunting. For a lifetime, yes, it is a good goal, but if you're like us, you need something a little more bite-sized. Therefore, our list has 101 titles, a size which is achievable and can give one a sense of accomplishment while still taking quite some time to accomplish. It will also give us a good start toward that elusive 1001 (after all, once we're done, we'll only be 900 books away, right?)

For this reason, we are not accepting requests for books to be added to the lists at this time. Our goal is to reach an obtainable goal and feel accomplishment when we reach it. These lists are not meant to be all-inclusive of all great literature but rather a bit-sized, achievable list that makes nominations easy and helps us slowly work our way through some of the most highly regarded literature to make us well-read and accomplished. If and when we do complete the books on one or both of these lists, we will have discussions on how to make selections for a new list, but being that reading through an average of one book per month it will take us over 8 years to read through all 101, this will not be something that needs addressed for quite some time. Enjoy the list as it exists and celebrate with us as we work our way toward the great achievement of marking off 101 excellent pieces of literature worth bragging about.

Nominations

1. Every member is entitled to nominate a maximum of one book from the list of adult novels each month that has not previously been read by the group.

2. Every member is entitled to nominate a maximum of one book from the list of children's books each month that has not been previously read by the group.

3. Nominations will begin on the 5th of each month and close on the 13th of each month.

4. Polls will being on the 13th of each month and end on the 18th of each month.

5. In the event of a tie, we will have a run-off vote over a two day period in which the favorite will be selected. If there is still a tie at that time, we will either read both books in one month (if they are relatively short) or will read one book one month and the second the next month. This is something we will discuss as a group if and when the occasion arises.

Discussion Rules and Guidelines

I know we are all adults so I include this section merely as a formality. Our group is designed to foster discussion and encourage us to read some great works while having others of like interest read them along with us. As we all come from different backgrounds, languages age groups and socioeconomic groups, there are bound to be differences in point of view and opinions at this time. We welcome all points of view, but please present your thoughts in a way that is thoughtful and respectful. We will not tolerate abuse of our members in any way. It is perfectly acceptable to have varying opinions and indeed, some very lively conversations can occur that way and we encourage discussion. If you cannot do so in a respectful manner, however, you will be issued and warning and if it becomes necessary, an offender will be removed from the group.

Discussion Frequency and Active Membership

We know various groups have rules about how often you need to post to discussion threads to remain an active member of a group, etc. Frankly, most of us are on GoodReads because we enjoy reading and having someone to discuss our current reads with is a nice bonus. I, for one, don't like the pressure of feeling like I have to be vocally participative on a rolling checklist basis in order to be part of a group. I want to have fun and want all of you to have fun as well. All we ask is that you post something occasionally to let us know you're there and that you are generally interested in the goings-on of the group. If you find that there are multiple books in a row that are chosen in which you have no interest, there is no pressure to make a comment in one of the discussion threads. If you only want to talk in the chit chat thread and just make a mention of a book occasionally, that is fine by me. I will go through periodically and remove some members who don't appear to be participating at all, but none of these members will be blocked from rejoining unless they have been specifically kicked out of the group for violating any rules previously mentioned. For example, I recently deleted everyone who had been a member of the group since 2012 but had never made a single post. But again, if you never post anything but you are one who follows the discussions and just wants to have someone to read along with, we are glad to have you! Just make a post once in a blue moon to let me know you're still with us.

All that being said, we look forward to discussion with you and hope everyone has a delightful experience reading through the 101 books on our list. Happy reading, everyone!
