I am looking at The Patience Stone by Atiq Rahimi. According to Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ he was born in Afghanistan, has dual citizenship in France and Afghanistan and wrote the book in French. Can I claim it for 20.1 (written in French by French author), 20.10 (born in an undeveloped country) and non-western style points for birth and citizenship in Asia?

Coralie, it appears Atiq Rahimi will work for 20.10 as he was born in Afghanistan. He will not work for 20.1 as this task requires a book written in French by an author born in France. According to Wikipedia he splits his time between Afghanistan and France and holds dual citizenship and therefore should be fine for non-western. I look forward to hearing what you think.

In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin is listed as #88 on the linked list for 20.9 even though BPL has it classified as nonfiction. Will it still qualify?

Yes, we'll use that list and that book qualifies, even though it is supposed to contain only novels (sometimes people don't read the instructions).

Could we have a link to the old BPL catalog on the Style page for each challenge? It's easier to make sure of the YA designation in that version and it would be an easy way to find the right link and check on our books.

For 10.3 - Conjunction Junction, do subtitles count?

I just read Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman and am trying to see where I can fit this book into a task. I know, if all else fails, I can put it either into 10.1 or in the Pick 'n Mix bucket.

However, can anyone weigh in on whether it will fit another task? I'm thinking either 20.7, Jewish author, because Gaiman has family connections that are Jewish (and therefore he may default into this category) but he does not claim to be an actual adherent to Judaism. Alternatively, 20.8, non-human MAJOR character, may fit, as one of the major characters is a god, the main character is the son of a god, but they are in human form and act like humans (for the most part).

I didn't see a separate thread for "10.4 - Prize-worthy: Read a book by an author that has won the Miguel de Cervantes Prize OR a book that has won the Prix Goncourt." so I'll ask my question here.

May I use The Girl Who Played Go by Shan Sa for this task? It won Prix Goncourt des Lycéens in 2001.

Only the titles on the linked list for the Prix Goncourt qualify for this task.

Sorry, Therese, the Prix Goncourt des Lyceens is a separate award.

There is a small upside to our answer, Theresa. If it doesn't work for any other task, you can read it for 10.1 Square Peg. Some seasons that's a hard task to fill, and this one may be not be an exception. ;-)

That's okay, Elizabeth. I found The Patience Stone by Atiq Rahimi, which won the Prix Goncourt in 2008. As luck would have it, the audio version was available through my library in Overdrive, so I've downloaded that for my weekend read.

Would the author of My Life in Doha: Between Dream and Reality by Rachel Hajar be considered a non-western author? She was born and raised and went to Medical School in the Philippines, went to the USA to do specialized cardiologist training, where she met her Qatari husband. After completing their training, husband and wife returned to Doha, Qatar in 1978 and established the first cardiac care facility in Qatar.

That was my error. 70 is the correct total as of post 53. I will post an updated readerboard this evening.

I'm a bit confused about whether to report my totals for RWS and Pick 'n' Mix separately or combined. I've been keeping them separate, but I see that the Readerboard update yesterday combined my 170 points for RWS with my 15 points PnM, for a total of 185.

Just to be safe, I posted another finish today and included both totals separately, with 195 for RWS and 15 for PnM. You can see that here .

If someone will set me straight, I'll be sure to do the right thing next time. Sorry, but this is my first RWS Challenge, and I'm really enjoying it!

Theresa, I'm glad you are enjoying this challenge. As far as score-keeping goes, we do add the RwS and the Sub-Challenge (Pick 'n' Mix, this season) scores together to give a single score for the Readerboard.

So Kate, do I combine mine in my posts, or keep them separate?

It is easier for me if I have a running total in your post to compare to my score. So, I would prefer a combined total. Thanks.

I'm confused about Non-Western style points ... I know an author has to be born in a non-Western country, but how long after that do they have to live there? Before, I thought an author had to reside in a non-Western country pretty much all their lives to qualify, but I can see now from Completed Tasks that I was wrong about that.

The 2nd requirement is citizen/resident. We have opted to give preference to citizenship when possible. So, even if the author lives in a western country, as long as s/he retains citizenship in the non-western birth country, we will consider him non-western.

this is kind of an odd question, I think. i'm going to start reading Captain Underpants and the Preposterous Plight of the Purple Potty People to my daughter as soon as it gets here in the mail. my question actually is about a couple of combos that I might be able to use. i'm trying to see if it would qualify for 20.5 because the series is about two boys who write a comic book and it sort of comes to life and 20.8 because the plot of this one involves them going back in time to take a misplaced pteranodon named Crackers back to his own time and getting stuck in another dimension. I've already checked and it has a lexile of 850, so it qualifies for style points, and I was going to use it for 10.3 - conjunction and.

20.5 must be on the linked list or a non-fiction biography/auto-bio/memoir, so it won't work for that.

10.3 Conjunction Junction is fine.

20.8 - Kate should weigh in.

we read just about every day unless she's freaking out about something and won't sit still. >.< but she's only 6, so you'll have that sometimes. I was told over the summer that she's reading on a 2nd or 3rd grade level and she hadn't even started kindergarden yet. she gets upset if she doesn't get to get a library book at school every week! hell, I've already got her writing a journal every day when the rest of her class are still working on writing individual letters... she's a sponge!

It seems the pet pteranodon is central to the plot, if while reading this proves to be true, it is fine for 20.8. Enjoy!

I am about to post a finish for Crime and Punishment, but wanted to be sure I can post a re-read. To be very honest, I believe I read this book for English class between 1967 and 1969. The only thing I remembered is that it was a Russian novel where the main character committed a murder. I also believe the book came up on my SAT or GMAT exam. Still, when I read it this week, it might as well have been my first read!

I never read it in school - lots of books being read in school these days that weren't in our curriculum, so this was from my first read, but it doesn't have to have been yours. I hope you enjoyed it.

I am listening to an audiobook that says Unabridged, however it is a full cast recording and I think it might be different than a reading of the book? Does this still count?

It should be fine as long as the cd is over 4 hours. Although, I'm curious to know what audibook you're listening to.

Damn its not over 4 hours. It was a version of Agatha Christie's A Caribbean Mystery with a full cast. It was really enjoyable!
