Finished The Hour of the Star and The Afternoon of a Writer. I liked the latter one better. I didn't like Hour of the Star much until I got to the end of it. I think I only then understood what it was about.

Kai Coates (southernbohemian) | 42 comments The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins. I really loved it.

message 503: by Jonpaul (new)

Jonpaul At the Mountains of Madness. Classic stuff. Really inventive.

message 504: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyneedsbooks) | 154 comments Death in Rome by Wolfgang Koeppen. Rather Thomas Mann-ish, a very uncomfortable post-war story, but so well-written.

Nicely written and enjoyable read.

Lauren | 73 comments I just finished The Garden Party and Other Stories by Katherine Mansfield. It was okay, but I'm not a huge fan of short stories. The three best stories in this volume are: "At the Bay," "The Garden Party," and "Ma Parker."

How did you like this? I currently have this one on hold at the library and should be able to pick it up soon.

I agree with both of you - loved both books! Read Moonstone as a result of loving Woman in White.

Have you read any other Wilkie Collins books?

Finished Zorba the Greek by Nikos Kazantzakis. Loved it! One of the best books I have ever read. Awesome, awesome, awesome!

Finished Bunner Sister by Edith Wharton. I liked the second half of it better than the first.

message 517: by Glorianne (new)

Glorianne | 33 comments Just finished Breakfast at Tiffany's. Loved it better than the movie, even though both are similar.

I have this book packed somewhere from my move. I haven't read it yet, but want to. Unfortunately, the place we moved isn't big enough to unpack all 1500 of my books so I'm currently slowly being driven insane by the need to access my books and the inability to do so...

message 520: by Sandi (new)

Sandi | 227 comments Finished The Left-Handed Woman by Handke. A married woman decides to separate from her husband and then has to overcome her loneliness, all in only a hundred pages. One of those stories that could have been interesting but just made me shrug.

Finished The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain. The story was really good, so many twists and turns in such a short book. But the language was awful.

message 522: by Steve (new)

Steve mitchell | 127 comments Finished Death in Venice by Thomas Mann
Surprised me a bit, great writing, strange plot but good read.

message 523: by Jean (new)

I definitely want to read this- really enjoyed the film

One of those cautionary tales that stick with you. A good read.

message 526: by Maggie (last edited Feb 20, 2014 07:01AM) (new)

Maggie | 106 comments Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. The only other Woolf I've read is A Room of One's Own and I really like her insightful and intelligent style.

message 527: by Katrina (new)

Katrina (katrinasreads) Story of an Eye by George Bastille, crude and dreadful, not sure how this is on the list.

message 528: by Linda (new)

Linda | 275 comments Daniel Deronda by George Eliot. It was the second George Eliot book I've read, after Middlemarch. It was good, but not as great as Middlemarch. There were a couple of coincidences which were a bit much in my opinion. I would rate it 3.5 or 4 stars.

message 529: by RoseB612 (new)

RoseB612 (janavertigo-designcz) Heinrich von Ofterdingen by Novalis. First half was nice, the second wasn´t really my cup of tea.

Good book!

message 532: by Laura (new)

Laura | 149 comments I finished The Turn of the screw yesterday. I liked that it was short, a classic, quality, really eerie and scary (scariest book that I've ever read). I didn't really like the ending because I don't understand what happened! So I need to look it up

Skillful writing, but I was frustrated by often feeling "I know what's going to happen - why can't the characters see it?!"

message 537: by Danyellemastro (new)

Danyellemastro | 170 comments The Beautiful Room is Empty. Although a smaller book, it packs a punch and the language deserves to be read slowly and thoughtfully. A really wonderful little gem on this long list.

Hi, Robyn! Welcome!

message 539: by Kai (new)

Kai Coates (southernbohemian) | 42 comments One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich - so very good and a quick read. Now I'm reading a book about Russian history at the time and understanding a bit more of the setting and author.

I'm just about halfway through that at the moment! I remember him being in the news as an exile when I was in high school.

Are you telling me that this is on the 1001 Books list?! I suppose I might put it on "1001 Books By Philip Roth You Must Read Before You Die", but to be honest I'm not sure.

Yes, it's on the list but was removed in the first revision. I wonder why...

message 548: by Manny (new)

Manny (mannyrayner) How many other books by Roth are there?

message 549: by Amber (new)

Amber (panduhbear) | 33 comments Six other Roths, if I read correctly.

message 550: by Manny (new)

Manny (mannyrayner) If I tried for a week, I could not come up with a better argument against this kind of list.
