First time reading this. The ending had me sobbing uncontrollably on the train (and thankful that I was wearing a mask so my crying wasn't so obvious!)

In December I finished War with the Newts by Karel ÄŒapek, a strange one blending fantasy and imagined history. Now I'm finishing up Quicksand by Nella Larsen, a tale of a young mixed-race woman who identifies as "Negro" in 1928.

Anne Kennedy | 13 comments I just finished Northanger Abbey which is a delightful read and quite satirical.

Angie | 3 comments Just finished The Great Gatsby. I have to admit that I didn't enjoy it, but that means I don't feel so bad about not reading it sooner.

Andrea | 34 comments I finished Blood and Guts in High School by Kathy Ackers. I’m certain it was added to the list purely for shock value. Personally, I think it’s a vile book and 10/10 do not recommend, but if your goal is to complete the list then know it is very graphic and made no sense to me.

I have finished The Melancholy of Resistance by László Krasznahorkai of Hungary. About 3.5* for me. There are no chapter breaks or even paragraphs but some of the sentences are not too long :) That reminded me somewhat of Henry James but the style is quite different so you may like one and not the other. He also wrote Satantango which I may read some day though it's not a list book.
There was a weird movie based on this unusual novel that I saw about ten years ago- the title is Werckmeister Harmonies. It was directed by Bela Tarr (also Hungarian) and was from Krasznahorkai's screenplay.

So do I! But she achieved more with these two novels than a lot of authors have done so with dozens.

I totally agree with you; this book has absolutely no redeeming qualities. If you look at the Wikipedia article on the book, the only "legacy" is that it is on the Boxall list.

I get it that a lot of people hate it but I have encountered plenty of people for whom it was very impactful. There is a community to whom Blood and Guts meant a lot.

So true, Nocturnalux!

Cphe | 24 comments The Children's Book - lengthy but I do like the author and overall enjoyed it.

The Immoralist - second book by this author and not this readers "cup of tea"
