I'd like to know if there is more than one audio book version, and if so, of those which is the best.

I'm pretty sure there's only one version. From the samples, it sounds like a pretty good production.
The Audible version is narrated by Jonathan Davis and his narration is superb. After reading all the books three times over 10 or so years I listened to the Audible books and really enjoyed his voice, tone, and pace. Such a great story. Truly a book of wonders......
