D.G. | 1370 comments POTS Cycle #5 Theme: Holidays: Since our reading will cover lots of holidays, I thought the theme could be a representative item on the book cover. So some holidays that I can think of (not inclusive I am sure) are: Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, Kwanza, and Hanukkah. The items could be a gift, turkey, candles, feast, party items, Christmas tree, etc. It would be up to the picker to determine the holiday and item. The holiday must occur within the reading time of 11/15/13 - 1/31/14. (~Bea)

RULES

Group 2
Amy - 4 books
Bea - 4 books
Tien - 2 books
D.G. - to read shelf (2 books)

D.G. | 1370 comments Ladies - Please use my to read shelf to pick for me. :)

Also, if you can, can you please pick at least one book that has been on my TBR since 2012 or older? (I'm trying to work on old books from the TBR instead of always picking the shiny new ones!) This is nice to have, NOT a requirement. Obviously if you know of a good book that I MUST read right away that I just added yesterday, please feel free to pick it. ;)

My picks for DG

Old book on TBR - Whitney, My Love

Oh, my goodness. I am not a romance reader at all but I thoroughly loved this book! I do hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Caleb's Crossing - This was a 5* read for me.

Theme book: A Christmas Promise shows iceskaters, snow and an evergreen. This definitely seems like Christmas to me.

-----------
Edited: Oh gee, I missed one book.

Grey Mask - This one is on my own TBR but I just have not gotten it done.

My picks for Tien:

Theme book: Lighthouse Bay. Chosen in honor of Australia Day - beach, bay, summer.

The Harmony Silk Factory. This is the oldest book on your shelf. Looks really interesting.

Captivate. Highest rated book on your shelf.

Thirteen Steps Down. Ruth Rendell is a classic mystery writer. Loved her books.

My picks for Amy:

Theme book: Palisades Park. (Thank you, Tien, for Australia Day - beach, surf, summer!)

Blood Work - Michael connelly is one of my favorite authors. I have not read this book, so I will be interested in what you think if you choose to read it.

Alex Cross, Run - Your most read author.

A Dog Named Boo: How One Dog and One Woman Rescued Each Other--and the Lives They Transformed Along the Way - OK, so I like dog books. This one sounds interesting.

Last Man Standing - Oldest book on your shelf

The Wise Man's Fear - Highest rated on your shelf

Marlin, Darlin': Garnet Sullivan Live from Florida #1 - Under 300 pages so should be a quick read.

Angels Flight - Just could not resist adding another Michael Connelly book to the list. I do enjoy his books.

D.G. | 1370 comments Thanks, Bea! Great choices! My internet is not working at the moment so I'll post my picks later today.

D.G. | 1370 comments My picks for Bea

I confess I haven't read any of the books on your shelf so I just picked whatever looked interesting. The first selection is the theme book (turkey in cover!) but I also picked a few from authors I know, the oldest in the list and the one with the highest rating.

A Catered Thanksgiving (A Mystery with Recipes, #7) by Isis Crawford The Bodies Left Behind by Jeffery Deaver Rolling Thunder by Doug Boyd Pilate's Wife by Antoinette May Breathless by Dean Koontz High Five (Stephanie Plum, #5) by Janet Evanovich The Big Killing (Smith and Wetzon Mystery, #1) by Annette Meyers Sunflowers by Sheramy Bundrick

D.G. | 1370 comments My picks for Amy

I haven't read any books on your list either so I went mostly with familiar authors or books that have been recommended to me. I picked the first book as the theme book (where I live, we use tons of scarves during the Holidays, LOL!)

One Breath Away by Heather Gudenkauf The Ice Princess (Patrik Hedström, #1) by Camilla Läckberg Centuries of June A Novel by Keith Donohue Tell the Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt Songs of Willow Frost by Jamie Ford Inferno (Robert Langdon, #4) by Dan Brown The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

message 12: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 1370 comments My picks for Tien

Like my previous picks, I haven't read any and chose them as follows: the first one is your theme book (in honor of Australia day...beach in the cover!), the second cover just looked interesting, the third is a book that came highly recommended and the last I had to pick because it was the only naked chest cover I saw in all your shelves, LOL!

The Hypnotist's Love Story by Liane Moriarty The Yearning by Kate Belle Suite Française by Irène Némirovsky Kiss of the Goblin Prince (Shadowlands, #2) by Shona Husk

Was too tired to actually post my picks last night so I'll do that soon-ish :)

And thanks for my books, DG & Bea.

ps: it's the nominated number of books plus 1

So really, since I asked for 2 books, each of you should only be picking 3 books for me (including a themed one) though feel free to recommend extra if there's something I really really really should read ;)

oh, my goodness! So DG & Tien - throw out one of my picks for each of you...and Amy you can throw out three of my picks for you! I somehow thought it was 2x the number of books elected to read. Boy am I confused!

So, Tien, if it is number of books I chose to read +1, then i get to eliminate one of the picks you did for me, right? 4+1 = 5.

Or does it make 6 when the theme book is added? In which case DG & Tien's lists from me are fine and Amy is the only one who can eliminate (2).

Going to bed now...really confused!

message 22: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9028 comments Mod
yes, I should really only post 5 books for you.

it doesn't matter, just pick whichever book you've like to read... just remember for next cycle, it's the chosen number of book plus one including theme book. :)

The World Is Bigger Now An American Journalist's Release from Captivity in North Korea . . . A Remarkable Story of Faith, Family, and Forgiveness by Euna Lee Chance (Spenser, #23) by Robert B. D.G. | 1370 comments I guess I've been doing it wrong all along. In all the round I've participated, I've been giving out double the books requested and everybody in my team has done the same - I sort of like it that way because I'm a mood reader and I read a lot of different genres. Or has the rule changed recently?

Bea wrote: "Looks like you and I were on the same wrong page."

LOL

I guess it's good to mix people up now and then.

I'd say the rule of "number of books nominated plus one" is really the basic so we can just use it as rule of thumb... there really isn't anything to stop you from picking more if you like to. Shall we just make that 'rule' the minimum?

message 27: by Amy (new)

Amy | 2231 comments For DG:

Theme: Between Shades of Gray (snow on the cover...white Xmas...I know, a stretch)
The Stolen Child
Kane and Abel

For Tien:

Theme: Lighthouse Bay (beach - Australia day)
Devil's Corner
Gone Girl

For Bea:

Theme: One Foot In The Gravy (love that title!)
The Fool's Run
Shallow Graves
Critical Conditions
Finding Moon

I will start with High Five (Stephanie Plum, #5) by Janet Evanovich .

message 29: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 1370 comments Oh wow! I don't know what to read! Thanks for the great picks!

These are the ones that are calling out to me:
A Christmas Promise by Mary Balogh Grey Mask (Miss Silver, #1) by Patricia Wentworth Wicked Nights (Angels of the Dark, #1) by Gena Showalter A Kingdom of Dreams (Westmoreland, #1) by Judith McNaught The Stolen Child by Keith Donohue

But I may change my mind as the week's progress. I won't start right away but I'll try to pick up in between reading for another challenge I'm in.

Finished High Five. Gave it 4*. Quick read because it is so much fun and so impossible! i love all the characters and would really like to ogle Ranger. Just the right amount of danger and sex, I am thinking.

I have started Stay since it is a library book, but I am thinking I will also start Shallow Graves because I want to finish it by 11/30/13 for another group.

Yay, I've finished reading 1 book (which I had to read as blog tour is coming up, well, starting today, I think but my stop is next week)

I read Captivate by Vanessa Garden. I'm really sad to say this but I think I'd only be rating it around 2-2.5 stars as the world was just too un-believable to me. It was an interesting premise but I just couldn't believe it. Plus, there was too much confusion on the profusion of feelings like the author doesn't know where to go with these either. ugh.

Don't think I'd be posting a review for my stop...
