John Mountford (killmandela) | 735 comments Some great aerial manoeuvres and barrels in that clip - I didn't know that Cape Town produced such good waves. I did my surfing in Durban when I was young. Are you a surfer, Don?

Deon Bing. I did when I first moved to CT 17 years ago, but I found the water too cold for surfing. I am now a Cape Talk 567 listener.

I can't believe that you wimped out over a bit of cold water! It was the highlight of all my visits to Cape Town. I loved the cold water. Totally exhilarating! Now it is the norm for me!
Re surfing..... This is how we do it in Ireland.....

Surfing in Ireland's in Donegal, right?
I love the sea, takes a lot to keep me out. But there's something about the warm KZN waters.
FYI, East Coast Radio also has a surf report. I heard it last September.

message 208: by Buck (new)

Buck (spectru) I live near the Gulf of Mexico. The waves here just aren't big enough for surfing. There is wind surfing, kite boarding, skim boarding, but no surfing.

No that video is in Mullaghmore, Co Sligo and there are other 'secret' places on the west coast, near the Cliffs Of Moher, where they get towed out by jet ski. Some of the videos are amazing. Surfers come from all over the world to surf Ireland now.

Yeah, it took me by surprise as well, Irene. I think it was the shock factor: I grew up in Durban, and for 8 months a year hardly a week went by without a swim at the beach. My son was a junior life-guard and we had breakfast on the beach every Sunday Summer morning.
The beaches in Cape Town are very different - beautiful to look at, but not family-fun friendly. And then having to wear a wet-suit ... too much pain for too little return. Our family just stopped going to the beach.
Those Irish guys have to be mad to ride waves like that - nasty stuff!

I must say that I was shouting for the Lions as well, Lisa. They are lovely to watch. Our teams are leading the conference - Sharks and Lions.

Irene (zavrou) | 122 comments John, don't forget that Durban was my 'home' town also. Favourite beach was Umhlanga especially at Easter Weekend.
I once dragged my twenty plus daughter into the sea at Clifton and she was crying the whole time and I was just laughing at her. Somehow I don't think she has forgiven me!

Let's us not forget the wonderful Sharks today! My SA team won but Ireland got beaten by three points. damn!

Yes, you were a Durban girl, weren't you. A wonderful life-style that we will never forget, I'm sure. I feel a little stab in the heart when I think of those times, Irene.

Sounds like an incredible childhood.
Tsaneen is beautiful.
You actually had monsters under your bed though...very scary!
When I lived in KZN, my housemate was a banggat about all creepy crawlies. When I found a dead snake, I put it in a jar to use as a threat for lazy behavior.
Dead snake in a jar does not equal live sleeping mamba!

With your hand.

message 230: by Buck (new)

Buck (spectru) I have a book, The Complete Care of Orphaned or Abandoned Baby Animals. What sort of a bird is a mousebird? I'll see if I can find something similar.

message 231: by Buck (new)

Buck (spectru) Wikipedia says: "The mousebirds are a small group of (possibly near passerine) birds, which have no known close affinities to other groups" It says they eat berries, fruit, and buds and that the young are quite precocious. Precocious - that's good.

message 234: by Buck (last edited Feb 23, 2014 11:24AM) (new)

Buck (spectru) My book says this about songbirds: "Baby birds are very difficult to raise if they are not yet feathered out. The biggest reason is that they must be fed at least every half hour throughout the daytime. If one feeding is skipped, the baby becomes severely weakened....

Baby birds are quite easy to feed in most instances, gaping their mouths open wide when hungry. Generally all you have to do is make a small sound to make them aware you are there, and the mouths fly open with cheeps of anticipation. If a newly found baby will not open its mouth, try tapping the beak with a small stick which holds a morsel of food. A broom straw works well. If this still doesn't cause the baby to open its mouth, gently grasp the bird and pry open the beak from the back corner and insert the food particle. Feed the baby bird all it will eat, within reason, at each feeding..."

We occasionally have found nestlings that have fallen out of the nest. We try to return them to the nest, if we can find it. If not we put them in a open container fastened on a tree branch, or once we used a step-ladder. The parent birds know best how to take care of their baby. The old myth that the parents will abandon the baby if it has been handled by people isn't true.

I tried to put him back Buck, he was too weak. Then I fed him and it was dark...
