Bill Voting closed for the first Group Read of 2014, thank you all for participating. 266 people voted. The nomination with the most votes is The Cuckoos Calling. Thanks again.

My apologies, I meant to have this thread up on Friday Maybe it's a sign of my increasing old age or just too much Xmas good food that's slowed me down.. :0). I hope everyone is enjoying the Dec/ Jan Group Reads featuring Tess Gerritsen, but maybe you can take a few minutes from your reading to nominate a book for the next Group Read. Just please read the rules we ask you to follow in making your nominations.

Nominations will be open from today, 28 Dec 2013 until 4 Jan 2014 and voting will take place from 5 - 11 Jan 2014. (Yup that's the new year). Please read rules below -

General rules for Group Reads

1) If your nomination wins - you will be the discussion moderator.

2) One (1) nomination only per person. Neither self-nominations by authors nor nominations by their respective publishers or publicist will be accepted.

3) Do not cheat or manipulate results. It is not acceptable to create fake accounts to nominate books or vote in polls and it is not acceptable to invite people to the site for the sole purpose of nominating a book or voting for a book in a poll. It is not acceptable to ask for votes or influence the poll in any way. If the moderators feel that a group read poll has been manipulated, the book in question will be disqualified. If the moderators feel that the user(s) are fake accounts, these will be reported to Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ for further review.

4) Please do not repeat an author we have read in the last year. Check the bookshelves to see the authors we've read in the past year.
/group/books...

5) For your nomination please include Title, Author and Link (Use the "add book/author" link at the top of the comment box).

6) Since we are an international group, please check to make sure the book is readily available in more than one format. The last thing we want is to nominate a book that no one can get.

7) Finally, a word about series - the joy or bane of a mystery reader's life! Please consider whether the book you are nominating would be best read by someone who has read all the previous books in the series or can be enjoyed by someone new to the series too.

Good luck with your nominations.

message 3: by Paul (new)

Paul Perry (pezski) | 233 comments I hope everyone is having a great Christmas and New Year.

I'll nominate Where the Bodies Are Buried, a stand alone from Christopher Brookmyre who I think is one of the finest writers currently in crime fiction.

Ooops.. thanks for that, Janet. Does it seem ok now?

I'll nominate The Guards by Ken Bruen.

Pamela Beason (pamelabeason) | 3 comments I nominate DRIFT by Jon McGoran Drift, a thriller about genetically modified plants. There are moments where you'll laugh out loud while thinking, "Wait a minute, I shouldn't be laughing, this is terrifying."

Interesting choice. I put it on my wish list on Kindle.

message 8: by Shaun (new)

Shaun Ryan I nominate "The Dawn Patrol," by Don Winslow. The Dawn Patrol The Dawn Patrol (Boone Daniels #1) by Don Winslow

The first of a series, but a great standalone as well. Excellent sense of place, great characters, full of tension and ever-raising stakes. Plus, it has surfing.

Linda Ronhummer wrote: "I'll nominate The Guards by Ken Bruen.

I'd go for that. Met him at a conference in Galway. He's a hoot!

Shelly Lemons | 2 comments ACROSS THE POND by Kenny Luckett. Suspenseful face pace enjoyable read.

message 11: by Laura (new)

Laura (laura300) | 36 comments Can I nominate The cuckoo's calling' by Robert Galbraith and JK Rowling

message 12: by Warren (new)

Warren Olson (warrenolson) I nominate SUNDAY MORNING by Ray Connolly ; may not be a recently published book, but somewhat different mystery that spans a few decades, continents and relationships. Some great characters and a storyline woven through the newspaper trade ; it does not quite have the usual 'happy ever after' ending, and is I feel a worthy candidate.
All the best to fellow writers/readers for 2014.

Hi Alison. We read A Place of Execution as a group read a few years ago - my how time flies! Here's the link to the discussion if you would like to take a look /topic/show/...

Terrific book and there was a pretty good TV adaptation too.

There's a bonus that comes with this choice. You can watch five movies from a German TV series based on Ken Bruen's novels currently streaming on Netflix. Read a book, see the movies (which really look like the books as I imagine them). What a deal!!

Thanks for this. Yeah, I really want to get started on The Guards. I'll be doing it soon. I have Roku and Acorn TV and will watch the shows as well.
What I can't understand is why Liza Marklund's earlier books aren't available. I really would like to read them before watching the series on Netflix. All of her books should be available already.

message 20: by Shelly (new)

Shelly Lemons | 2 comments I'm sorry I did not add the link to my nominated book ACROSS THE POND by Kenny Luckett. It's worth the time. Fast pace and exciting.

Bill I'll double-check these when I have time at work tomorrow, but please check your nominations against the Group Read bookshelf to make sure we haven't read the book or the author in the past year. The link is in my first post.. Thanks and Happy New Year all!

message 33: by B (last edited Jan 04, 2014 11:18AM) (new)

B H Hi All: I'm new to the group and GR so I hope I get this first attempt right. My name's Bill too but BH is my sign on. I'd like to nominate THEIR LAST SECRET: DECLASSIFIED and part two THEIR LAST SECRET: DISCOVERED. An incredible two-part contemporary thriller available on most e-book readers and Amazon -- and part two -- .

I like to read debut thriller novelists as well as the established authors. This book should be the next Viola Davis movie. Written by a screenwriter and it shows. Worth a long look.

message 34: by B (new)

B H Great suggestions. I've added several to my "want to read shelf'. Like it here already.

BH - It seems as though the book is only available on E-book/ kindle. It might make it difficult for some of our members to access. Do you have any other books you might like to nominate?

message 36: by Bill (new)

Bill Shelly wrote: "ACROSS THE POND by Kenny Luckett. Suspenseful face pace enjoyable read."

It looks like an interesting book, Shelly, but it's only been out since November and seems to be only available on Kindle. Maybe it might be better to let it be on the market for awhile longer so everybody can have an opportunity to access it.

Bill Some excellent selections for the first poll of 2014. I'll set up the poll tomorrow. Thanks for your interest and excellent nominations.

message 40: by Maia (new)

Maia Osborne | 27 comments if the nominations are still open I would like to add Tokyo by mo hayder to the list if possible. I have read all her books and they are all brilliant, but Tokyo is a stand alone and based around real events, so I think would appeal to a larger audience.

message 41: by Laura (new)

Laura (laura300) | 36 comments Yes but you have to pay to download books and lots of people can't afford that. Many people get paper books from a library for free :-)

Bill Laura wrote: "Yes but you have to pay to download books and lots of people can't afford that. Many people get paper books from a library for free :-)"

As you say, Laura. We do ask in the brief at the top of each Group read to ensure all books are available in most formats.

No problem, Maia. I'll include, but you may notice that I'm probably going to use the US title, The Devil of Nanking, as it seems easier to find for poll purposes.. Off to set up the poll. :0)
