Nina | 6069 comments Speaking of British TV, what i always loved were the "All Creatures Great and Small," series and also the "As Time Goes By," with a young Judi Dench.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I feel sorry for the "expendable" ones. :)

message 203: by Werner (new)

Werner That's my sentiments too, Joy!

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, yes I enjoyed "As Time Goes By". That great British humor! :)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I'm currently listening to:
Animals in Translation: Using the Mysteries of Autism to Decode Animal Behavior*
by Temple Grandin.

For anyone interested in animals this book is a must. Audible.com may currently be offering a FREE audio-book. It can be a great opportunity to access the above-mentioned book FREE.

As with Temple Grandin's other book, The Autistic Brain: Thinking Across the Spectrum, Grandin reveals much information about how the human and animal brains work. I find her books fascinating and easy to understand.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments PS-There is a biopic film about Temple Grandin.
"Temple Grandin" (2010)
See the following links:
NETFLIX:
IMDb:
"A biopic of Temple Grandin, an autistic woman who has become one of the top scientists in the humane livestock handling industry."

message 208: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I just finished a couple of mystery thrillers. Shovel Ready by Adam Sternbergh was a 4 star read, very quirky & perfect as an audio book. My review is here:
/review/show...

Fault Line by Barry Eisler was the first book outside his John Rain series that I've ever read. I liked it better for the main character, but it's very similar otherwise. I read this as an ebook. My 3 star review is here:
/review/show...

I don't usually like to have 2 mysteries going at once in 2 formats, but it worked out well this time. Sternbergh's writing & world can't be confused with anyone else, that's for sure.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, your review mentions that you liked the voice of the reader of the audio book. A good reader can really enhance the "reading" experience. I recently listened to an audible.com version of Unsinkable: A Memoir, written and read by Debbie Reynolds. I enjoyed the fact that Debbie Reynolds read her own bio. However, one reviewer commented that Debbie's reading wasn't very good and a different reader would have been better. I disagree. The reading may not have been perfect but Debbie's droll personality shone through the entire reading experience. That made all the difference to me.

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I ordered these books from SFBC this week, got a great deal, 40% off and free shipping, cost me about $20 for all three. I can't wait to get them and read them, all 3 sound really good.

The Man in the Empty Suit /book/show/1...

message 211: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Readers are definitely a very personal choice.

message 212: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Congrats, Jackie!

message 213: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, reading about Debby Reynolds, "Unsinkable," reminded me of "Unsinkable Mally Brown," which in turn reminded me that we name our first sailboat, "Molly Brown." and it never sank.

message 214: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Mar 14, 2014 10:03AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I had to look up SFBC at acronym.com. :) I should have realized it means: "Science Fiction Book Club"! Good deal, Jackie!

What a great name for a boat, Nina! I used to keep a list of boat names I came across. I wonder where it is. :) I do remember a couple:
"Marie's Nightmare"
"Mom's Money"

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments LG library is having a book sale today, I'm going, wish me luck that I find stuff on my list.

message 217: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) May you find so many that you have trouble carrying all of them home, Jackie.

There are never too many books, just too few bookshelves.
;-)

message 218: by Jackie (last edited Mar 14, 2014 12:29PM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I got one book of my list: #3 in the Rama series by Clarke. I've been halted in this series because of this book, I expect to read it sometime soon.
And an Herb book.

The library will have a sale every other Friday going forward. Sadly, it's not organized in any way so I won't be going back for a while.

message 219: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Mar 14, 2014 04:17PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Glad you found at least 2 books at the sale, Jackie.
I have Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama in my audible.com collection. I listened to about half of it but I don't remember finishing it. At least I tried it. :) P.S. My review says I finished it.

Nina, "Allegra" is a beautiful name for a boat. We knew a couple whose boat was named "Prelude". I remember seeing a boat named "Jolly Cork". Cute! Ed's father had a motorboat called "U-go-I-go".

message 222: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I remembered our friend's boat' name:Sweet Sixteen.

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I like that quote, Nina.

message 225: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thanks for the quote, Nina. Good one!

message 226: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Inside Out by Barry Eisler is the second Ben Trevan book. I liked it even more than the first or any of his John Rain books. Excellent action & conspiracies. My 4 star review is here:
/review/show...

I just finished listening to Red Moon by Benjamin Percy. It was only a 3 star listen, unfortunately. It had a lot more potential than that, though. My review is here:

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thanks, Jim. I'll check those links out.

message 228: by Jackie (last edited Mar 19, 2014 03:53PM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Started The Second Book of Swords, really like this series. Gave the first book 4 stars.
Got my new books, can't wait to get start on those after I finish this Swords trilogy and an upcoming buddy read.

message 229: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jackie, I love your enthusiasm!

message 230: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Do you have all the books, Jackie? If not, let me know. I can loan them to you. I'll bet you'd really like the earlier ones like Empire of the East.

message 231: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Jim, I just have the 3 Swords book, I don't have the Empire of the East series. I have a lot to read right now, so I won't be reading them immediately. I can probably get them from the library. I'll look into it, if they don't have them, then I would definitely want to borrow them when I'm ready to read them. TY for offering!

message 232: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I finished the Second Book of Swords. After the abrupt ending of the last book, I expected it to pick up and continue about the war. Instead, I got a treasure hunt, set 5 years later. I consider this a side-story and want to be back to the real story but now I'm not sure what the next one will bring.

Later tonight I'll be starting a buddy read with Werner, the 4th book of the Bright Empire series, The Shadow Lamp

message 233: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jackie, I understand what you mean about "side-stories". So often an author seems to get side-tracked, going off into tangents about minor characters who aren't that interesting. The authors must be so involved in their imaginary worlds that the think everyone else wants to go off on tangents with them. That's when they lose me.

message 234: by Jen (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 182 comments I've just finished Divergent and The Shadow Rising. I'm currently listening to (and almost done with) Escape from Camp 14: One Man's Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West, and have just started reading The Forgotten Garden.

If anyone is considering reading it, Escape from Camp 14, it is thought provoking and intriguing. It's the story of a North Korean who was born into the prison camps and his escape from Camp 14, which is supposed to be the worst of the camps.

message 235: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Mar 25, 2014 06:18PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments The Forgotten Garden sounds interesting! Mysterious! I see that it's already on my to-read shelf.

message 236: by Jen (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 182 comments Joy, it's really good! I'm about 10% in, and really glad that I picked it up. :)

message 237: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Enjoy, Jenni. It's been a while since I got involved in a really compelling book. I'll have to try to get that one.

message 238: by Jen (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 182 comments I love it so far!:)

message 239: by Werner (new)

Werner Jackie, I'll be starting The Shadow Lamp tomorrow, having finished Dark and Stormy Knights today; so we'll be starting pretty much in tandem!

message 240: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments One of my very favorite books, "The Forgotten Garden."
Hope you like it as much as I did.

message 241: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Mar 26, 2014 07:15PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments That's TWO recommendations for The Forgotten Garden !

message 242: by Jen (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 182 comments Nina, I am enjoying it quite a bit. I'll need to look at other stuff that this author has written. :) My hubby has been out of town, so it's been just me with the kids... so I've only read a few pages in the last couple of days, but I love it!

Joy, you must read it! :)

message 243: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Mar 27, 2014 05:35AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jenni, I do plan to read it.

Meanwhile, I finally finished Dear James.
Below is a link to my review:
/review/show...
I wish I could have given it more than 3 stars but it had some annoying drawbacks despite the intriguing relationship between a priest and a teacher.

message 244: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Jenni, "The House at Riverton," by the same author is also quite good. Joy, here's a quote I like,"We must never confuse elegance with snobbery." Yves Saint Laurent.

Wow, Nina. That quote needs to be analyzed! LOL

message 248: by Nina (last edited Mar 27, 2014 09:15AM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Those are thought provoking quotes, Joy. Thanks for sharing. Strange unsettling things happening last week. We receive an email saying a friend of our in Italy had collapsed and fallen in her son't garden and died by the time the ambulance arrived. Four hours later we receive another message saying she didn't die but was in a coma. This morning another message telling us she did die. Always sad to lose a friend. She was 74 and they figured died because of a cerebreal hemmoirage.

message 249: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, that's very sad. I send my condolences.
