Lesley | 1589 comments Are you up for a new GROUP Challenge?
We know books can run the range from 100 pages to over 1000 pages, and simply recording the number of books read always an accurate record of reading progress - especially if you hit a run of chunky reads.

This challenge will run for the full calendar year, but I will record your monthly totals in a post immediately below this so progress can be seen readily.

These are the Rules -

Add any books you read during the challenge time frame 01/01/2014 to 31/12/2014. Even if you don't join immediately, go ahead and add books that you read starting on 01/01. We will allow backdating for this challenge.

When you finish reading a book, go back to your original comment and update it with the number of pages, book link, date read, number of pages and your new total pages.

Any book counts, as long as you read it this time-frame - book club selections, audio books, ebooks - add it! When counting audio or ebooks use the most popular edition of the paperback/hardcover on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ for the page count.

Started but DNF (Did Not Finish) a book: add it, but only add the number of pages you actually read and comment that you did so.

If you'd like to join us, copy the template below and post a new comment. Once you add your comment I will add your name to the list of Participating Members.

Good luck!:)

I loved "The Curiosity", I can't even explain why without giving away the story.
"A Closed book" is written almost entirely in dialogue, and it's a bit odd; there are passages where it gets so dull I wanted to put it down but if you stick it out the last few pages get really interesting and it has an open ending which I loved.
I hope this helps.

Don't expect the same for February ladies. This was only achieved due to January being holiday month and the weather being either wet, windy or both thus not making it tempting to be out in the garden, beachcombing or whatever.
February is back to reality and normal reading levels.

message 15: by Lesley (new)

Lesley | 1589 comments Ladies, how would we like to up the interest level in this challenge?

We could have a bonus round where points are awarded for certain added categories and the person with the most points for that month decides the bonus requirements for the next round. Each round could be every month or just every other month. Some suggestions for earning points could be

? points for each new to you author
? points for a specific nominated genre/category
? points for specific nominated cover design (book with fruit on cover)
? points for nominated cover colour - 50/75% of cover to be that colour
? points for first in series/sequel
? points for next in series/sequel
? points for classics read
? points for books with over 450 pages

The ideas are endless - next person to to decide bonus round could even be the one with the least pages read!

So, it's up to you or anyone else who wants to join in - it isn't too late! Just hit reply and have your say.

I read Dracula about three years ago. So glad I read it during the day, as it had me terrified. A great read.

Lesley | 1589 comments Okay, let's start with something nice and simple.

For every new to you author you read this month award yourself
10 POINTS

Whoever has the most points will decide the bonus round for April.
Kathleen wins with 90 points

60 points Ella's Gran
40 points Angie
90 points Kathleen
Talia
30 points Sharlene

message 18: by Talia (new)

Talia Nyx Kathleen, I'm still working on Dracula; there are some classics that I chew through in a couple of days, this one is a little meatier and with thanks to Scholastic's terrible late '80s/ early '90s newsprint paperback printing I have to wear my glasses and have good lighting as the text is well handled. I am enjoying it so far, I even had to stop and Google mamaliga - the breakfast dish he has an route to Dracula's castle, it's on my to-try list.

It's a kind of porridge or bread (depending on how thick you make it) made from corn meal - also known as polenta. I Have to go to an actual supermarket to get it, as it's not something we have at home, and I am lucky enough to get out of shopping duty 99% of the time. I'll be sure to let you know how it goes.

Lesley | 1589 comments Important note for March

This month our challenge is audio books, so just to let you know these will count in this challenge too. The number of pages you will enter for any books listened to please use the most popular edition count from Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. That is the first page you see when you search for the title.

For instance if you listened to Latte Trouble by Cleo Coyle then the number of pages would be 243 pages.

Enjoy

That's a very good idea of using the spoiler Sharlene. Keeps it more under control. Thank you.

So, if everyone keeps to just one post, but just keeps the current/forthcoming months visible by hiding previous months in a spoiler please.

That makes it easier for me to see totals etc. and update message 2 with all our totals.

message 44: by Lesley (new)

Lesley | 1589 comments Kathleen's really keen and worked out her challenge for us already so we will do it in June so here it is -

*This challenge involves titles so articles - a, an, the are not counted.
* Only using initials of your first and last names - not middle names please.

Score
10 points if the title of book begins with the same letter as your initial (either 1st or last name)

30 points if the title contains words that begin with the initials of both names.

example: if you were Kathleen Dixon and read -
Drink the Air you would score 10 points (for Dixon)
or
Kayang & Me you would score 10 points (Kathleen)
or
Dragon Keeper you would score 30 points (Dixon and Kathleen)

Hope this is clear. If not just post your question/s and one of us will respond.

Happy reading for June.
