We discuss the literature, culture and society of the British Victorian period (1837-1901) and we have many activities on the go. Please join in with existing discussions and feel free to start any of your own - there'll always be someone around to join in.
Just to help you navigate your way around the group, here are the main folders we have, with a brief explanation as to how each one works:
WELCOME TO THE VICTORIANS!
As well as this introductory post, other things you will find in this folder are:
- Leave Your Card! If you are a new member, we’d love to know a bit about you. Introduce yourself here!
- Tea in the Parlour Where we chat over a "hot cuppa" (chat doesn't have to be Victorian related, and usually isn't!)
NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
Just what it sounds like---anything new or changed will show up here
NOMINATIONS for group reads. The Moderators will set up the nominations thread each time we are going to read a new book (currently an average of 6 weeks for each book depending on its length). Once nominations have ended you will be sent a message asking you to cast your vote in the poll and the nominations thread will be archived.
GROUP READ DISCUSSIONS
These discussions will always feature near the top of the home page and are started by the Moderators and/or Group Discussion Leaders only. In this folder we discuss the books that have been voted for by the whole group. A Reading Schedule and a thread for Background Information are posted at least a week before the group read starts. After that, the book is normally divided into roughly equal sections and we discuss one section per week over 6 or 4 weeks, depending on the length of the book.
BUDDY READS
This folder is for discussing a Victorian book which hasn't won group votes, but which two or more people want to discuss anyway. Any member can start a discussion here.
BIOGRAPHIES AND NON-FICTION
From time to time we read biographies and non-fiction works related to the Victorian era, either as a group or as buddy reads. As with past group reads, you can revive these discussions at any time simply by posting your comment. There will always be someone around to reply.
POETS CORNER
For all things poetry.
AUTHORS
Want to chat about Dickens or the Brontës? Or perhaps you are a fan of a specific Neo-Vic author. Here is the place to do it. This folder is open for chat and recommendations of all authors and any member can start a new topic.
GENERAL VICTORIAN ERA DISCUSSIONS
Here is a place to discuss all things Victorian. It could be to talk about a certain genre (like Victorian ghost stories) or to discuss Victorian fashion - it's up to you!
NOT STRICTLY VICTORIAN:
Confusingly to many, Jane Austen and Edith Wharton et al are not Victorian authors. However they do still have huge followings. While this group is about the Victorians and therefore Austen’s and Wharton’s books wouldn't be eligible for nomination in the group reads, some of us still love to discuss them. Feel free to start a new topic about a book or author that doesn't quite fit the time frame in this folder.
VICTORIANS LEARNING CENTRE:
The Learning Centre is a folder where we can share information about up-coming free online courses related to Victorian history, culture and of course literature. If there is demand, we can also set up threads for discussing individual courses.
HOW TO.
This folder exists to help you get the most out of the group specifically and GoodReads in general. If you have any questions about how things work technically (eg: how to manage spoilers, how to add a link to a book or author to a post or how to change your notification preferences) post your question here. And if you’re a GoodReads expert or simply a technical whizzkid, help us out with the answers!
THE ARCHIVES:
Here you will find archived threads for all the books we have previously read as a group, organized by year. These discussions remain open permanently and are only moved into this folder when a new book discussion starts in the main thread. If you want to join in with any book discussions that we have already had, please just add your comment at the bottom and the post will automatically rise to the top - there will still be people around who will want to chat with you about it.
Above all, have fun!
