Bitten
question
Did you see the tv series based on this book?

I have watched just the first episode, but I haven't read the book yet. I was wondering if I should read the book?

I read the books a long time ago; however, I remember enough to know that I don't like the changes. I know stuff has to change, but mainly the only thing the same are the names. Some of their personalities are different. People I respected more I don't in the tv show. It's just as bad as True Blood.
I like the show, but it is really different from the book. I remember Logan died in the first book, but he seems to be alive and kicking here. Elena's bf in toronto was a sidenote but he seems to have a prominent role in the tv series. It's better to think of the series ask having similarly named characters and places and not to compare the two. The books are much better but the tv series is nice too. kind of like comparing fast food to a steak dinner. The characters are very different from the books, Elena for example is much more petite (though really nice on the eyes) and Clay looks much gruffier. Highly recommend the books and I also recommend the series though its not as good as the competitors like "The Originals" and "Teen Wolf". Still, fun to watch. Just don't expect the characters to be any real parallel to their literary personas. I'm surprised Kelly Armstrong wasn't more angry about the changes made to her characters but it was probably part of her deal with the tv network to keep negative opinions to herself.
I've only seen the first episode so far, but I so far I'm just not feeling. It's been years since I've read the earlier books, so I'm not so critical about consistency. However, my big beef is with the special effects. They are terrible.
The books are much much better. The TV series has changed practically everything. it is an atrocity I would suggest that if yon have read the books and are a true fan of the books you skip the TV show.
The actors playing Clay and Elena are super qualified for these parts and I am soooooo pleased to see that the show has thoughtfully recruited them. Although fans could probably pick other actors that may be better suited to the role (in terms of image bla bla bla), I think that this was the right way to go. I am shocked (in a good way) that the show is so tastefully done. The actor playing Elena is like a Karate genius super black belt or something, and I think she played Superwoman in some show or movie. These skills translate well though her character and makes the show 'feel right' somehow. It doesn't purely rely on annoying and stupid effects or over sensationalising the supernatural stuff. I like that the show has an alternative and ambient feel and look forward to watching it evolve.
Now that the series is over... I'm wondering how different it is from the book? I get the feeling that the ending (with super-secret bad guy revealed and two good guys in trouble) is completely different and is a good set-up for season 2... I hope we get a season 2! I watched out of curiousity, but was all "meh" at the beginning, as the season passed the halfway mark I was hooked!
But I'm really curious as to how it compares to the book...

I loved the books but I also enjoy the TV series. If you have read the books, you have to go into the TV show knowing that it does not follow the books. You will definitely be disappointed if you don't know that in advance. The first few episodes of the TV series were a little slow, but they definitely pick it up over the next episodes and I like what they have done thus far! :-)
Just watched the entire first season and I would say skip it. The gratuitous and frankly emotionally void sex scenes were a total turn off. Honestly, they took Elena's and Clay's supposed first kiss/sex from 0-120 in 3 seconds. It didn't come off as loving or endearing, just like OH we need a sex scene and obviously the first time you kiss someone you like you just go straight to taking their pants off. They added a love triangle by making Phillip a main character, this was just irritating, and while for a while I enjoyed the expanded logan plot, his g/f made such bad choices that it got old quick. I am weird-ed out by the direction they are taking the plot with Elena being a resource to be exploited. UGGGG Sorry I am just so frustrated by the series because the book was very very very good, but the tv series makes it seem like a twighlight wanna be (the worst thing to call something in my book.)
Bitten is my least favorite book of the Women of the Otherworld series, so I didn't mind the changes very much. They didn't completely screw up Jeremy (whom I love) so that was a point for the show. Clay and Elena in the book are not characters I like a lot, so it didn't bother me that they weren't just like the book. Overall, I really enjoyed the TV show except for the bad CGI and I hope there is a season two.
I wasn't into it much until I ended up watching it in a marathon and then enjoyed it but I do agree that the special affects are awful.
The books by Kelley Armstrong are all excellent. I did watch the series and even though not always the same as the books brought back memories of the book that I had read several years ago.
I watched the first season, and disliked it quite a bit. And my husband recorded the second season thinking I liked it (don't know why), and lacking anything else to do I decided to watch it.
OMG. The second season is worse. Ever so very much worse than the first season. Words can't describe how much worse.
I would have given the first season a D. This season gets an X it's so bad. WOW.

I read the books a while ago, and now I'm puzzled where the series is going. The 2nd season has moved into prophecies, male witches and curse mythologies: matters entirelt absent from the series. The series built up a widespread otherworld without any of the thunder/doom stuff. From the 2nd season developments, how will they introduce sorcerers, or necromancers? I'm puzzled; still watching, kinda enjoying, but definitely going in a different direction than Armstrong's series.
Oh, there is no, no, NO comparison to the books, which are absolutely superb. The show was entertaining, but it was EH. But there is NO comparison to the books, imo.
I thought there would be no way SYFY could pull off what's in the books, the complicated stuff with the Cabals and sorcerers. All the stuff that goes on in the books with so many various types of supernaturals. It might take HBO to pull off a show like this for Kelley's Otherworld series. HBO did True Blood and that was good. Heh, HBO also used real wolves!
There are more books, btw - after Thirteen, there is more - there is
Forsaken and then Driven.

Definitely read the books, there are a LOT of them, books and long novellas, about 14 so far and TONS of shorts so intebetween say, book 5 and 6 might be 5.5, 5.6 and so forth. Get a list from some website. This is a complex and excellent series.

I was turned off when the television pilot opened with a sex scene. Changed the channel and wrote it off.

I'm watching it because I like the books and it's filmed in part in my home town :-)
It's true that the actress casted to play Elena provides vastly different image from what we know from the book. I guess diehard fans could have trouble with that but I think the creators chose deliberately someone who looks a little fragile to achieve the same effect Sarah Michelle Gellar had in Buffy :)
The tv series can be awkward at times but it's still worthwile if you're willing to overlook little imperfections.

The book is better then the TV series. Do yourself a favor and read the book you will enjoy it more.
I was so excited to see this thread. I had no idea they were making a TV series based on these books. I will definitely check it out but I am a little worried I will get annoyed if they change things too much. I think the more you like a book the more upset you get when they randomly change things for no good reason. Does anyone know it it will stay about the wolves or if it is likely to follow all the books in the series and include main roles for Paige, Lucas & Eve (all of whom I love).
It's not quite so bad after that second episode to me. I just hope that cause there wasn't much involvement of the author it goes the way of True Blood. That show had it's great and good moments. But sometimes it was just uberly ridiculous at times. Would hate to see that happen to Bitten, which is such a different take on the typical urban fantasy/PNR stories.
I read the books and I loved them. I was not disappointment in the show. Elena is exactly who I would of have casted. Clay I was hopping a little more Southern. But so far it's good.
I watched the first two episodes and they are totally awesome!!! for those who are interested. But I do believe that the books have to be read! They were very good books. Actually, anything by Kelley Armstrong is fabulous!
So far the tv series is pretty loyal to the books, except that Elena seems to be a photographer instead of a journalist and they have given more importance to her relationship with Logan... but it all makes sense! But you must read the books to understand why! :)

I've watched the first two episodes so far, and as a big fan of the book series, I'm also quite enjoying the show. It's definitely an adaptation, but it's an interesting and well-paced one.
Regarding Elena looking girly in the first episode --- I noticed that as well, and I believe that it's intended to be a statement as to how much she's trying to distance herself from her former (casual) self. In the second episode, she's at Stonehaven and there's a scene with her in sweats.
There are many differences in the television show. To name a few: Elena's connection with Philip is much more sexual, Clay is not gruff and antisocial, Elena seems much more connected to her Toronto life (whereas in the book she's much more isolated and lonely there).
We're only two episodes in, and at the end of each I was caught by surprise by the fact that the episode was over because I was so involved that it seemed like no time at all had passed. I'm also very happy that they're staying true to the books by going for the long plot arc from the start (as opposed to many other supernatural shows that start off with a villain of the week format which I loathe --- I'd much rather be tossed into a plot from the beginning).
Since Kelley is not involved in the production, I think you have to make the choice to appreciate the show for a separate entity inspired by the characters. I am keenly aware of the difference between books and show, yet it isn't bothering me. I'm also watching with my husband, who has never read the books, and he's enjoying it as well.
Also, I adore what they've done with credits. The shot of blood being scrubbed off the floor is incredible.

I'd recommend the books anyway. I enjoy most of the series. I like the werewolves books better than the witchy ones that appear later. The demons are pretty hot too, no pun intended. (Well, maybe a little intended.) Armstrong is a good writer and I like her mix of action and humour and romance.
The Clay-Elena dynamic really pops on the pages. On the other hand, the other characters are getting more development on the show it seems, so there are reasons to watch/read both.

Yes, definitely read the books... remember that the author has nothing to do with SyFy's adaptation so don't hold it against her.

i think this series will have to be viewed as more of a separate entity from the book a little like the walking dead is. may be good but don't expect it to follow step by step.
I think I'd like it more if I hadn't read the books
I keep seeing things and saying "that's not right" for whatever reason. Like Jeremy being Caucasian and Clay being somewhat flirty with his students in the first episode. Also - Elena's makeup really annoys me... she looks odd compared to the other people at Stonehaven.
That said - two episodes in and I can feel myself starting to get into it.

It seems it doesn't review too well. From the pictures, Elena looks more girly than I imagine her, but as a keen follower of the books I'll probably check it out anyway.
