I finished Cold Fire (Spiritwalker, #2) by Kate Elliott yesterday. Not as good as the first one in the series, but still entertaining. It dragged a lot in the middle though.

Have u read her 'crown of stars' series? I loved that. I thought it was cleverly written and kept me hanging on to find out what was going to happen next. I esp loved the mind city that Liath uses to remember everything. Then really couldn't get into the 'crossroads' series.

No, this is my first series by Kate Elliot. I had seen the covers for the Crossroads series and marked it as interesting, but my initial interest in her work came from a review of Cold Magic and thus I went with the newest series.
But since then I heard from a few sources that Crown of Stars is also very good. I'm going to check it out sometime.

Lola (lolasreviews) I am currently reading Reunited (The Nogiku Series, #3) by S.J. Pajonas , it's great so far, I loved the first two books in this series, so i didn't expect anythign else.

Last book I finished was Venture City Stories by Brian Engard , it's a world for the Fate Core roleplaying game and I really enjoyed it. Although you do have to read Fate Core first if you want to understand the system.

Roomies. I felt like reading some YA contemporary, I don't read loads of it but I enjoy it more than expected, for sure.

The book was sweet, but not amazing. It flitted between ratings for me, and I ended up settling on 3 stars.

I just finished Tower Lordby Anthony Ryan the sequel to Blood Song. It was brilliant. Not quite up to Blood Song but a great follow up

Good to know! I just finished Blood Song and really liked it, so I'm looking forward to the sequel.

He changed style for the second book going for a changing POV similar to ASOIAF.He moves between 4 characters instead of just Vaelin. For me it works, for some reviewers it didnt.

Yeah, I read about this change and I'm really looking forward to it, cause I actually prefer multi-pov narratives. So a book that got 5 stars from me having only one pov is quite rare, so I'm really excited to see what he does with more than one.

I liked it. It allowed the world to open out more

I couldn't finish the book, I don't know what it was but I had no interest in what was going on. I really liked the first book so I don't know why I didn't like this one, but this is now the first book in my not-finished bookshelf...

message 63: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
I liked the extra detail of this one. It is slower in the middle than the first book which might put some off but the last third and climax are brilliant.

message 64: by Roger, Knight Radiant (new)

Roger | 2032 comments Mod
I may come back to it because I really did like the first book a lot and I usually don't mind some slow spots (I've read Wheel of Times several times...). I think most of it stems from the fact that I'm not really into reading right at the moment, I have read a few books that are real light or YA but can't seem to get into deep/epic stuff...

message 65: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Some fans of the first book didnt take to the start of the second so its not just you. Maybe one to come back to when it appeals more.

Sounds like I need to read Blood Song... to be honest I've seen it around a lot and it's always drawn my attention. Yet it's not on my TBR - time to add :D

Its worth it Rinn. My favourite book of last year.

message 69: by Scott (new)

Scott (thekeeblertree) Definitely worth the read! Tons of good stuff

The second took me a little bit to get adjusted to the pov switch, but it was really awesome to get to see things from a new character as well as a couple favorites from the first. Dude tells an awesome story

message 70: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
He really does. I think I was able to adjust because his writing is so good whatever the POV choice. And one of the POV characters, newly introduced in this book, was amazingly interesting.

Agreed. She ended up being one of my favorites, her story arc was so engrossing.

The Lies of Locke Lamora I really adored this book. It was beautifully written and eloquently arranged. There was never a dull moment for me. Some of the reviews called it too dark and political but I thought both of these things made for a much more interesting world. But then again, there isn't too much that I find too dark anymore. I like it when bad things happen to characters and I want to yell/throw the book. If it results in passionate reactions then the author has done very well in my opinion.

Oooh, that was one of our previous Books of the Month, so I'm sure you can find the discussion thread in the Fantasy section if you wanted to discussion in any depth :D

That one didn't quite live up to my expectations, but I did enjoy it - especially more in the second half.

Haven't read this yet, but I just started Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Vol. 1. I'm not going to lie, the main reason I'm reading this book is because I really love the Dynasty Warriors game series.

I'm glad I'm not the only one :) I love reading critic review of Dynasty Warriors, they all say the same thing "Same game as previous versions with a few tweaks." These words just make me super happy and want to go out and buy the latest version :) When I buy a new version I know I'm just going to be button mashing my way to another 1,000 kills!

Did you read this version of it that I am reading or is there a better translation out there?

That is the version I have as well. I have these books as softcover, but read it on my Kindle, cause the e-book with all volumes costed about 3 Euro, so I got it digitally as well.

The Lady Astronaut of Mars: A Tor.Com Original
The Water That Falls on You from Nowhere

Both were interesting, albeit very short reads. Tor.com orginial fiction.

Rick Finished Lock In this morning (3am is morning, yes?). I think the next up is either The Causal Angel or The Mirror Empire

Just finished Written in Red

Loved The Water that falls on you from nowhere. I read it a few months ago, I think.

I just finished Written in Red. I really liked it, and it's making me think I should go try out some more UF.

Just finished the Fool's Assassin and I have to say I'm very underwhelmed. The characters are okay, but nothing happens in this book, I'd say a quarter of the books is about what clothes should be worn.

I have to say this may be the last book of Robin Hobb's that I read.

message 94: by [deleted user] (new)

And now I'm done reading The Color of Magic (Discworld, #1) by Terry Pratchett which was awesome. I love how it makes fun of all the fantasy tropes.

Have you got The Light Fantastic. It picks up right where Colour of Magic ends

message 96: by [deleted user] (new)

I have not. I do plan to read more of Discworld. Oh hey, maybe you can answer something for me. Do you ever find out what Rincewind's spell does? Don't tell me what just if he ever uses it or not.

I just finished The Emperor's Blades (Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne, #1) by Brian Staveley and am head of heels in love with it. I could practically reread it right this second even though I finished it just 5 minutes ago.
