We are halfway done with Week 30! You read a book published the year you were born.

This discussion thread is solely for your progress. (Book discussions go in individual threads.)

What did you read this week?

Did you enjoy the book?

Did you find easily the book for this week?

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 319 comments What did you read this week?
The Great Train Robbery

Did you enjoy the book?
I enjoyed it very much. I am not sure which parts are true and which are fiction. It would be interesting to find out.
This has also been made into a movie, and I am going to try to locate a copy. It has some great reviews too.

Did you find easily the book for this week?

Yes, I have always wanted to read Michael Crichton and was happy that I finally had a chance. I have added Jurassic Park to my list too.

Erica | 214 comments What did you read this week?
Deadeye Dick (1982)

Did you enjoy the book?
Yes, and I'm glad because it was the first Vonnegut book I've read, though I've felt like I should read him for quite awhile.

Did you find easily the book for this week?
Not really. There weren't many books I was interested in reading from 1982. I chose this one though because of great reviews.

Jean Cole (joc724) | 115 comments What did you read this week? Till We Have Faces by C. S. Lewis

Did you enjoy the book? It was just OK. I decided to read a C.S. Lewis that didn't have anything to do with the Narnia series. This is a retelling of a Greek myth. Maybe I needed to be more informed about Greek mythology to appreciate this book.

Did you find easily the book for this week?
I felt there were a decent number of choices for my year -- Peyton Place or Pygmalion & My Fair Lady by G.B. Shaw. I think I read Peyton Place a while ago but I kind of wish I'd chosen something other than Till We Have Faces.

What did you read this week? The Wave (1981)

Did you enjoy the book?
It's a re-read. I enjoyed it, as before, because the subject is interesting, but the writing is very average. A quick read, more for teenagers than adults.

Did you find easily the book for this week?
There were few books published this year which interested me, so I decided to re-read one I didn't remember but owned.

message 6: by Biana (new)

Biana What did you read this week?
Endless Night by Agatha Christie I read Endless Night by Agatha Christie.
Did you enjoy the book? I was a fan of Ms. Christie back in my youth. I had no idea that she wrote so late. It was a great trip down memory lane and yeah...I enjoyed it!

Did you find easily the book for this week? No. I am nearing 50 and so much of what was written back then isn't available, is completely outdated, I've read, or just bored me looking at the options. When I found an Agatha Christie, I didn't even look to see what it was about!

EllenZReads What did you read this week?
Papillon by Henri Charriere

Did you enjoy the book?
No...I actually only read about 50 pages. I did not like the story, the writing, or the main character (it's an autobiographical account of Henri Charriere's attempts to escape from a horrible prison after being sentenced for a murder he did not commit. It takes place in the 1930s. I expected it to be really interesting, but it was poorly written and he's not at all likeable.

Did you find easily the book for this week?
I found a lot of books published the year I was born (1969) but wasn't sure I'd be able to find them easily--this one was at the public library. My other choice was The Andromeda Strain--I might read that instead.

Heartburn by Nora Ephron

Did you enjoy the book?
Nope not at all.

Did you find easily the book for this week?
It took me awhile to find one that I thought I would enjoy reading.

Marta (gezemice) For this week I readThe Outsiders. I was blown away! Most dramatic book I have read, I think. My new favorite!

There were quite a few choices for my year 1967. The Outsiders was on my list anyway (read Fangirl recently and it is a major part of the plot), but other great choices would have been Rosemary's Baby, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, The Master and Margarita, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, or Endless Night.

One of my favorites, One Hundred Years of Solitude, was also published in 1967, I could have re-read it since I don't remember it very well.

/list/show/8...

Yes

Did you find easily the book for this week?
I think so, it may have taken me a while to find one that interested me, but I don't remember having a ton of trouble finding this particular book :)

Jody (jodybell) | 531 comments What did you read this week? Slapstick or Lonesome No More! from 1976.

Did you enjoy the book? It was just ok. I found his writing style equal parts enjoyable and irritating. It did make me want to read more of his work though, and I'm currently working on Slaughterhouse-Five.

Did you find easily the book for this week? There wasn't a great deal that appealed to me from 1976 - nothing great was produced that year! But I have been meaning to read Vonnegut for a while, so I chose this one.

Michelle (mich2689) | 122 comments What did you read this week? The Remains of the Day

Did you enjoy the book? It was ok.

Did you find easily the book for this week? It wasn't hard. I just googled books from my birth year and picked one that sounded appealing to me.

Valerie | 9 comments What did you read this week? Comet in Moominland

Did you enjoy the book? Yes, as it was a childtren's story from a Norwegian author, I found it quite interesting. I do wonder how old the children for whom the book was written were, as it was somewhat scary.

Did you find easily the book for this week? While 1946 was a long time ago, they did publish books so I had a lot from which to choose.
