Post your thoughts on the first half of the book here.

I have read this one a couple of times, so I'll reserve my judgment for the final thread. Any of you first time readers? Or is this a many-times-over re-read? If the first time, what do you think of it so far? If re-read, why does it keep drawing you back?

message 2: by Britany (new) - added it

Britany Many times over read! Loved this book. Interested to see what everyone else thinks.

Irene | 1881 comments I have also read this several times. With so many titles on my TBR list, I won't be re-reading. But, I look forward to seeing what others think.

Renee I never read this book in school, so this is my first time reading it. It's interesting that the story is told not through Gatsby, but his next door neighbour Nick Carraway. We don't actually meet Gatsby until the third chapter I think and he's a very mysterious character. Everyone seems to think they know something about him, but what is the real truth?

Before the war, Gatsby fell in love with Daisy, who just happens to be Nick's cousin. I don't think he wanted to get involved, but Nick arranged a meeting for them to come to tea so Gatsby could see her again after she had married. He still has feelings for her, and I think she had feelings for him, but am not positive as we don't really know what went on between them after Nick left the room. I do hope she has feelings for him as well though because I don't like her husband and his mistress.

Hopefully more will be revealed about Gatsby as he's still a bit of a mystery and I want to know more about him. Maybe him and Daisy fall in love again and get together? I am enjoying it so far.

You're in for a treat, Renee :) It's honestly not one of my favorite books, but it lends lots of discussion, so looking forward to what you think about it as it goes along.

Cosmic Arcata | 18 comments I have read The Great Gatsby several times. I would like to point out something in case you kinda skipped over it lightly. (view spoiler)

Irene | 1881 comments I can't access hidden spoilers. So, I am not ignoring your comment, just can't read it.

Renee After finishing the book the other night, I watched the movie that came out a couple years ago on Netflix. I was instantly pulled out of the story and the movie when the rap/hip hop music started playing. Horrible choice in music for a period piece in my opinion. Most of the music didn't seem to fit the movie in my opinion. Maybe it's too much to expect music from that period in a movie about that period. Not sure what they were going for there other than maybe aiming for a younger audience or something. I managed to watch the whole thing (only fell asleep twice) but it was nothing compared to the book.

Irene | 1881 comments Did not see that movie, but heard that criticism of the music choice by every commentator who reviewed it.

I haven't seen it and hadn't heard about the music, but from your descriptions, it sounds like it would be very out of place and take away from the story. Half of the ambiance of the book is the 20s "speakeasy" kind of feel, even without hearing actual music.
