Pixie Rose (princesspixierose) Poetry/verse - There are plenty of books of poetry/Epic poems (like the Odyssey)

Crash Course - There is a Youtube Channel called Crash Course wherein the Green brothers give crash courses on things. Anything relating to what they discuss in their videos ranging from History to Science and even specific books.

June Wedding - Books about weddings, books that have weddings in them, books to help you prepare to take part in a wedding

I Still Believe in 398.2 - Fairy tales, folklore, books that one would find in the library at this call number or books relating to books one would find at this Call number.

Books About Books: Metafiction or books about how to read books or assist in the reading of specific books.

Allison | 179 comments May, June, July, and August are all women's names. Maybe we could do a challenge that has something to do with these months, like either an author's name, character's name, or one of those months (or any other month in the challenge) in the title?

the Believe in 398.2 sounds fascinating.

Merc (oswinssouffle) I Challenge Thee: Read a book from another persons TBR that isn't in yours. It could even be the person who posted above or below you to make it more random!

(Hopefully not) Lost in Translation: Read a book that has been translated into your mother tongue.

Famous Recommendations: Read a book that a famous person once recommended.

(I do believe we have done a challenge like that before. It was where we were challenged to read something another author mentioned. John Green mentioned Into the Wild but I never read it and recently removed it from my TBR. Lol)

HonoRORY Gilmore Girl : Read a book mentioned by or read by the character Rory from the Gilmore Girls. There are a couple lists on GR and even a blog (i believe) dedicated to reading such material.

I can't really think of any themed ones that fit a spring/summer environment. Except for reading something "hot".

Is It Hot In Here? : Read something where heat is a theme. It could be about a fire.. or passion? Maybe obsession.

message 8: by Pixie (last edited Mar 10, 2014 08:16PM) (new)

Pixie Rose (princesspixierose) Study Abroad: Read a book about someone in a country not their own.

Research: (A 25 Point Challenge) Read a novel, and then read a non-fiction work that connects obviously to the subject matter. (Example, I read Moby Dick and then I read a book about Whales, or whaling, etc.)

Midsummer Night's Dream: A book about something mentioned in the play. (Athens, Fairies, Plays, etc.)

PotterMORE: June 2014 marks 17 years of Harry Potter. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is officially a wizarding adult! Time for a re-read? Or something relating to HP, like a book about Wizards, Merlin, Boarding Schools.

The Cover Game: Read a book from the Cover Game thread.

TV away from TV: Books that are from the universe our favorite TV shows, like Doctor Who, Supernatural, Star Trek.

Bizarre, Unique, and Special holidays: (Another potentially 25 pointer) Pick 2 holidays that will happen during the challenge from this list () and read a book relating to the holiday. (Other bizarre holidays not listed are also ok, since Towel Day isn't actually on this list, and it is clearly the best holiday ever.

Also, April is National Poetry month, so that goes with one of my original ideas.

Well everyone knows I am a HP fan(atic), love the PotterMore one.

The Cover Game is also a fun one.

Allison | 179 comments I really like the Gilmore Girls idea... but maybe that's because I love the show :)

message 11: by Megan (new)

Megan I like these ideas:

I Still Believe in 398.2
May, June, July, and August are all women's names
HonoRORY Gilmore Girl
Bizarre, Unique, and Special holidays

They are different and I don't think we have done these particular challenges.

Merc (oswinssouffle) Allison wrote: "I really like the Gilmore Girls idea... but maybe that's because I love the show :)"

I see nothing wrong with that bias. I always loved the show, too, though I am a bit afraid to rewatch the series! Heh.

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
I have them all on dvd. Watched whole series at least three times clear through. Nothing wrong with reruns. There also was a fanfiction that took it another year or two longer that was quite fun.

message 14: by Adrianna (new)

Adrianna (adrilove) | 15 comments Ideas I like:

The 398.2 - sounds interesting. :)
May, June, July... sounds like fun
The award goes to.. so many good books that won the GoodReads award.
HonoRory Gilmore Girl.. yes

Great ideas!! :)

message 15: by Pixie (new)

Pixie Rose (princesspixierose) I found this list for the Rory Gilmore challenge:

Jana at ThatArtsyReaderGirl.com (miss_jana) | 125 comments My only request is that we not require too many non-fiction books. Having them count is perfect, but to require them really limits a lot of people. I like reading for fun in the summer, since I read non-fiction and textbooks all school year.

I really like the 398.2 one.

My ideas:

Road Trip: Read a book that takes place in a state or country/Province/city/etc. (if not in the USA) you have never visited.

The Deep Blue Sea: Read a book that takes place in or on the Ocean.

The last week of April is National Karaoke Week. Read a book that has song lyrics in the title or is about a singer.

April Showers Bring May Flowers: Read a book with a colorful cover.

April Fool's Day!: Read a book by an author who is using a pen name. (Like Robert Galbraith = J.K. Rowling.)

Spring Cleaning: Read the book that has been collecting the most dust on your shelf. (Or you have owned it forever and have still not read it.)

Don't Forget the Sunscreen!: Read a book with a bright, sunny day on the cover.

message 17: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
the Karaoke one is great! I will get some song stuck in my head that I haven't heard recently, and figure out it is because of something I read. :)

Also April Fool's seeing as Robert Galbraith's second is due out in June!

message 18: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (seekingoriginality) These I've seen people suggest so far and I like the ideas:

398.2 - Fairy tales, folklore, books that one would find in the library at this call number or books relating to books one would find at this Call number.

Trilogy Start or finish a trilogy

Spring Cleaning Book on your to-read list the longest

Marathon Read Book over 700 pages

HonoRORY Gilmore Girl : Read a book mentioned by or read by the character Rory from the Gilmore Girls. There are a couple lists on GR and even a blog (i believe) dedicated to reading such material. - I loved the show so I thought this one was great!

May, June, July, and August are all women's names

message 19: by Pixie (new)

Pixie Rose (princesspixierose) Looking back at the last 4 reading challenges, I pulled a list of some that I think are still really cool, and wouldn't mind showing up again:

--First and Last: Pick an author who is no-longer alive (and is therefore done writing). Read their first book and their last book.

--Take A Vacation: For this task, we are going to build a vacation. Use this () to roll the die to see what you get. Set the die to roll 2 die at a time. For this first book, you will need to read a book set on that continent. The next roll will decide what kinds of things you will be doing on your vacation. You can only roll once.
Location:
1. North America-
2. South America-
3. Africa
4. Asia
5. Australia
6. Europe
Type of Vaction:
1. History & Culture: Your vacation is all about experiencing the culture and history of a foreign land. Read a book that revolves around an important historical event or person or read a non-fiction book about anything history/culture related.
2. Cruise: Your vacation is all about having a nautical adventure. Read a book that mostly takes place on the water.
3. Romantic: Your vacation is all about having a romantic getaway. Read a book that is considered a "love story" or a romance.
4. Thrillseeker/Adventure: Your vacation is all about having an adventure. Read a book where the main character has some sort of planned/unplanned adventure or read an adventure novel.
5. Foodie Vacation: Your vacation is all about immersing yourself in the food and drink of the country you are in. Read a book where food is a central theme to the book –fiction or non-fiction.
6. Volunteer Work: Your vacation is all about experiencing another culture by helping its people. Read a book about somebody who is doing some sort of humanitarian work/missions work in a foreign country.

--For the Love of Reading: April 23 is World Book Night, an event designed to share the love of reading with those who may not have access to books.
Read 2 books: 1 A and 1 B
A: Read a book by an author with a book on the 2013 US book list. If you select Favorite American Poems, you may use any book of poetry.
B: Read a book by an author with a book on the 2013 UK & Ireland book list

--These Are a Few of My Favorite Things: Read a book about one of your favorite things, or re-read a favorite book.

--Don't judge a book by its cover: Read a book with a cover image you particularly like and show the cover. Then read one with a cover that does not entice you to read the book. Which book did you like the best?

message 20: by Allison (new)

Allison | 179 comments I have to agree about preferring to not have too many non-fiction requirements.

Some ideas I like that have been mentioned:

--June Wedding
--Trilogy
--Bizarre Holidays
--What I did on my Summer Vacation
--April Showers Bring May Flowers
--Don't Forget the Sunscreen
--Don't Judge a Book by It's Cover
--These Are a Few of My Favorite Things

I like reading a couple of books by the same author, but I felt like the First and Last was a little limiting. Maybe I just need to do a little research and expand my dead author horizons :)

message 21: by Melissa (last edited Mar 18, 2014 02:14AM) (new)

Melissa | 279 comments I liked the challenge were you pick a book from someone else's current reading challenge for yours.

May: *National Smile Month. Read a humorous book.
*Children's Book Week 12-18. Re-read your favorite childhood chapter book or read one you always wanted to read.
* Cookie Monster's Birthday 25th, read a book with a cookie, baked good, or cafe on the cover.

June: *Audio Book Appreciation Month. This one might be hard because some don't like listening to audio books, but this is a reading challenge right? So listen to an audio book.
*National Bathroom Reading Month (LOL) Just funny so I had to share. Maybe have a book that you only read in the bathroom throughout the challenge, in the tub etc.
*Fish are Friends, Not Food! Week 22-28. Read a book with a fish on the cover or a book that takes place near the ocean or a lake.

July: *National Recreation and Parks month: Read an outdoor adventure book.
* Fourth of July, read a book that has a blue, red or white cover. Or ones that has a mixture of these colors.

I like the Pottermore idea, TV away from TV,Romantic also!

Pixie Rose (princesspixierose) Pictures worth a thousand words: Graphic novel challenge

message 23: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (rachelsherman) July 28th marks the 100 year anniversary since the start of World War I. It was a war that had a huge impact upon the world and that perhaps one of the tasks can focus on it.

This summer is also the Men's world cup, perhaps a task could have a person reading a book set in one of the countries that are playing in the tournament, but isn't their country of residence. I.E. someone from the US could read a book set in Japan or Bosnia since those are just a couple of countries that qualified.

Kayla | 604 comments There are so many good task ideas!

The ones I'm especially excited about are Like a Virgin, 398.2 Fairytale/Folklore, Art Smart and the graphic novel challenge. HonoRORY Gilmore Girl is probably my favorite so far, though. I love that show and I even have a list of books seen/mentioned on the show that I had posted on my blog. :)

The Take a Vacation challenge is a great one too. Any of those past challenges that gave us options/choices to pick from were always fun to do.

message 26: by Allison (new)

Allison | 179 comments What about a task where you have to read a book by an author who has your first or last name?

message 27: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rmtb) | 62 comments Traduttore, Tradittore ["Translator, Traitor"]: I've read a few articles recently that say native English speakers are flagging compared to other countries when it comes to reading foreign/translated fiction - what about a challenge to either read a book in translation, or for those who can, in another language?

message 28: by Swissysmile (new)

Swissysmile The Dictionary challenge: open a dictionary to a random page, and close your eyes, and put your finger on a word. Google books with that word in the title. If there aren't any, do it again till you find one :) You learn new words AND you find new books, it's a win-win challenge :D
