Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 1036 comments I would love to see more Innes added to the list! The buddy read this month seemed quite popular. The next book in publishing order is There Came Both Mist And Snow, a.k.a. A Comedy of Terrors, but since this group read it in 2020, perhaps we should skip to the next, Appleby On Ararat? Whatever the mavens think best.

message 856: by Judy (new)

Judy (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejudyg) | 10959 comments Mod
Abigail, I would also like another Innes, but agree with the suggestion we should skip the next one as we only read it a couple of years ago, and go for Appleby On Ararat, as you suggest, especially as the order doesn't matter all that much with these. Which month would you like to do that one?

P.S. I wasn't sure what a maven is - just googled it and I see it is an expert! You are taking a leaf out of Innes' book and enlarging my vocabulary!

message 857: by Judy (new)

Judy (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejudyg) | 10959 comments Mod
Sorry, I spoke too soon - just looked and I see that Appleby on Ararat is not currently available on Kindle in the UK and also out of print in paperback. Maybe we should skip that one for now too?

message 858: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 1036 comments There are so many Innes novels—more than 30 Applebys alone—that if we don’t do them monthly, we’d be at it for years! But as you know, I’m obsessed and I have pretty much all his books, so I feel I shouldn’t influence others unduly.

If you like adding to your vocabulary, you should read his Staircase in Surrey series, published under his real name. Those had me running to the dictionary about five times a page. Love the richness of English.

message 859: by Judy (new)

Judy (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejudyg) | 10959 comments Mod
P.S. I was a bit surprised as I thought the early Appleby books were all on Kindle Unlimited, but I see the publisher has not reissued Appleby On Ararat and left it out of the numbering. Confusing!

The next one which is easily available if we skip our previous read is The Daffodil Affair - what do you think about that one, Abigail, and anyone else who is interested?

message 860: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 1036 comments Aak! I do know used paperback copies of his books are quite widespread because I searched Amazon and ABE Books to fill out my collection recently. But finding them on Kindle may prove a fairly regular problem. If I have time this morning I’ll do a check of upcoming books in the series. I think the next is The Daffodil Affair (sorry, on my iPad Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ keeps randomly switching me in and out of a version where I can’t add links; it seems to happen when I’m responding to non-USA people).

message 861: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 1036 comments Our messages keep crossing in the ether! I’m fine either way (gee, twist my arm to read more than one Innes in a month) but will wait till others join the conversation.

Judy (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejudyg) | 10959 comments Mod
Yes, our messages keep crossing, Abigail! We already have an Edmund Crispin book in September, and I know many people who like Innes like him too, so how about reading The Daffodil Affair in October? Would this also suit others? (I don't think I could manage to read one every month!)

I've just had a look and it appears that, apart from Appleby on Ararat, the books are all on Kindle up to and including Hare Sitting Up (book 18, or 17 according to the publisher.)

I have recently been given the Staircase in Surrey books, so hope to try the first of those too as well.

Rosina (rosinarowantree) | 1135 comments I'll be up for an Innes read at any time (and I can manage more than one a month, but they are nearly always re-reads by now).

I read the Staircase in Surrey a couple of years ago, and plan to re-read one day (or over several days ...)

Yes, just let me know which Innes, and where, and I will add it. We finish the Hilary Tamar books this month. I am particularly enjoying Catherine Aird and Cyril Hare.

message 867: by Judy (new)

Judy (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejudyg) | 10959 comments Mod
Thank you Susan, Abigail and Rosina - it sounds as if we should be OK to slot The Daffodil Affair in for October, unless anyone has other thoughts?

I'm also enjoying Catherine Aird and Cyril Hare, Susan - just ordered a couple more old paperbacks of the Aird titles. I've also noticed that the next Aird, The Stately Home Murder, has an alternative title of The Complete Steel - for a second I thought it was the wrong book in my omnibus edition!

Did you not mean book 6 in the Michael Innes series? Just checking.

message 872: by Judy (new)

Judy (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejudyg) | 10959 comments Mod
Hi Susan, thank you that's the right title but it's really book 8 - we read book 6 at Christmas 2020 and book 7 is out of print and not on Kindle, so the publisher has skipped it in the numbering.

message 873: by Susan (new)

Susan | 12931 comments Mod
Oh, that's a bit naughty. Shall I change the number, or will that confuse people if they look on Amazon and that's how it's listed?

Judy (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejudyg) | 10959 comments Mod
I'm not sure what is best - maybe we should call it book 8, as Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ does, but from here onwards the numbers are different on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ and Amazon and other book websites in that series, so I suppose there could be confusion either way!

I've added The Man Who Went Up in Smoke, the second Martin Beck book by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö, to our buddy read list for January as requested by Carolien and other members - if anyone wants to read the first book, Roseanna, first, you have a few months to do so. :)

message 880: by Sid (new)

Sid Nuncius | 234 comments Oh thanks, Judy! I'd forgotten about this series. I dimly remember reading The Man On The Balcony yonks ago and thinking it was very good. I'll try Roseanna and, unless I hate it, which is unlikely, will join in with TMWWUIS.

It's always rather exciting to have a new series to look forward to!

Are we continuing with Catherine Aird’s Sloan and Crosby mysteries? I will be, but I wondered, thanks very much for the updated list - I’m such a nerd, I like to start thinking about my reading goals for next year already! Very helpful to see what the group is reading - I’m definitely into the wonderful 2023 challenge reads, lots of new titles and authors for me, but not all of the Buddy reads.

Anyone else not receiving new comments in the GR threads?

Susan in NC, we have Catherine Aird's fourth book listed for mid December - A Late Phoenix (Sloan and Crosby #4) by Catherine Aird :)

Oh, definitely, Susan. We have listed for December: A Late Phoenix (Sloan and Crosby #4) by Catherine Aird
I generally put in the next when the group has read/is reading the latest.

There are only 10 books in the Flavia de Luce series, so we will finish those soon. Also the Cyrile Hare Pettigrew series only have a couple left, unless we continue with the three books in his Inspector Mallett series.

Only a few of the Clara Benson books too. I think, by next summer, we will have spaces for some more series if anyone has any in mind.

We have Murder on the Minnesota (Ocean Liner Mystery series #3) by Edward Marston listed this month, Jill. I will then add in the next. Agreed, Susan. I've read one of each and that's enough for me. 😊 I tried another Benson but couldn't really be doing with it and wasn't even tempted by another Marston.

I think the Aird books, although similarly light in some ways, have much more to them; there's significant wit, bite and thoughtfulness under the lightness which for me is lacking in Marston and Benson.
