Ok for those of you reading Relic Use this thread to discuss the book
I'm looking forward to your thoughts

Kamas Kirian (kamas716) | 925 comments Only have a few pages left. I really like this book. I think they did an excellent job with the pacing. I love how it keeps speeding along. The last third is breakneck.

The one quibble I have is that there are simply too many characters to keep straight easily. They could have easily combined several characters and not lost anything in the story.

Something I just realized reading through this time is that sometimes D'Agosta is referred to as 'Loo'. I'm wondering if maybe his character started out as Louis and then they changed his name to Vincent at some point and missed a couple of the 'Loo' references.

I'm about 150 pages into it, and I really do like this book! I agree that the pacing is excellent. I'm learning just enough as I go along to make me want to keep reading.

I'll check back in when I get further along, and I hope more of you join us. It's definitely worth reading, and probably not what you expect.

Kamas Kirian (kamas716) | 925 comments I finished last night. I forgot they put in the epilogue about Kawikita synthesizing more of the plant and selling it as a drug. That plays a part in the sequel, Reliquary. I want to go back and re-read the series now. I picked up the last few books when they were on sale but haven't read them yet, so that would make a good excuse I guess.

I really enjoyed this book! I finished last night and now I want to read the next one. It's definitely a series I will look for when my library has it's book sale.

It occurred to me that it was the other police officers who called D'Agosta "Loo." I think it must be short for "Lieutenant."

Kamas Kirian (kamas716) | 925 comments That makes sense, short for lieutenant.

As for the next in the series...that would be Reliquary. However the one after that isn't listed in the series list. Thunderhead deals with reporter Bill Smithback rather than Agent Pendergast (hence the reason it isn't listed in the Pendergast series), but the characters end up playing small parts in later novels when Pendergast's relatives start getting introduced. While not necessary, I'd suggest reading it as well. I think Thunderhead came off better than Reliquary the first time I read them. Many of their non-Pendergast novels end up tying in someplace with the Pendergast series, at least tangentially. If I remember correctly Pendergast ends up hiring in a later novel the engineering firm featured in Ice Limit. And I think one of the characters from Riptide was related to a character in the Pendergast series somewhere.

I think when I'm done with my current book I might come back to this series. I enjoyed the series, but some of the books weren't as strong as others.

Kamas Kirian (kamas716) | 925 comments If you haven't seen the movie based on this book, DON'T! While I really like Tom Sizemore, Penelope Ann Miller and Linda Hunt as actors, and I think Peter Hyams has directed some really good movies, this movie sucked. STAY AWAY from it if you care about what you envisioned in your head about what was going on in the book.

Ang from OZ | 1690 comments I think pretty much 80% of the time the movies ruins the book experience!!

Thanks for the suggestion to read Thunderhead. I really like Bill Smithback. His attitude was a good addition to this book. I was surprised when I pulled the movie up on IMDB and he wasn't even listed as a character in the movie. And neither was Pendergast!! I couldn't believe it! And Cuthbert was a woman instead of a man! Also, I noticed they changed the name to The Relic, instead of Relic. I will definitely pass on the movie!

Kamas Kirian (kamas716) | 925 comments Had I been in charge of the movie I would have dropped the Greg Kawikita character (most of what he did could easily be rolled into Margo Green's character), combined the three museum talking heads into one character, maybe even just given all those parts to Cuthbert and Moriarty. I would not have gotten rid of two of the major characters of the series.

I agree! Your version of the movie sounds a lot better!

Started reading Reliquary and I'm hooked already. The one thing I've noticed is that D'Agosta is still a lieutenant. At the end of Relic wasn't he up for Captain?

Ah. . . I just had not read far enough. Just got to the explanation as to why he was not promoted.

Minor spoiler here re: Reliquary

***

This was something I didn't notice until I was perusing the prestonchild website one night, probably because it's really not a big deal unless you are familiar with the area, but they apparently moved the museum between the two stories. It's just something minor and was done to make the story move along a little faster.

Kamas and TarHeelGirl, I"m so sorry I couldn't join in the Relic discussions with my husband's health and my required reading I just didn't have time.

No problem, Deb. I know you have a lot on you right now. I really enjoyed the book more than I thought I would, and am really getting into the second one of the series too!
