Guin (guin_r) I personally can not get into either one. I have attempted to read both but for some reason they didn't keep me entertained enough to continue.

message 2: by ella (new)

ella I LOVE them both! I'm reading the Hunger Games right now for the first time, and it's amazing. I've read the first four Harry Potters, and am obsessed with it. I mean, look at my name, and profile picture.

The thing is, the Harry Potter books are really long and detailed and sometimes I'm a little bored with the part I'm at. The Hunger Games is just a lot more simpler, and I get through the pages a lot quicker.

Cannot choose. Harry Potter still. Well, it appears that Harry Potter is the chosen one. ;)

Harry Potter! Harry Potter! I'm hanging my profile's introduction.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't want to offend you, but...HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't know anyone (besides my aunt) who doesn't hate Twilight.

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah, I prefer Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

I haven't seen the movie, but I love the tv series. We're getting off topic here.

Hm..Aaron, I understand why you don't like it. My brother dislikes Harry Potter, but he liked Hunger Games. Tastes differ, I suppose.

I know many, so it's almost inevitable.

message 10: by ella (new)

ella Harry Potter is the CHOSEN ONE! Get it? ;)

message 11: by Joe (new)

Joe Schobert | 7 comments Hunger Games not even in same league as Harry Potter

message 12: by Ellison (new)

Ellison Huang (ellie_huang) I think harry potter is better

message 13: by Ellison (new)

Ellison Huang (ellie_huang) Hunger games is kinda sad with all the people dying, ya know?

message 14: by ella (new)

ella People die in Harry Potter, too. But yeah, there is more death in the Hunger Games.

Initially, Harry Potter doesn't have much of violence, but Hunger Games is belligerent.

message 16: by K.P. (new)

K.P. Merriweather (kp_merriweather) | 7 comments He isn't as violent as battle Royale. Now that there is ultra violent

Aaron(Reblast) wrote: "I heard Hunger Games is very violent. Kids killing kids and all that."

Yes, Aaron, it is a game where children kill others. They can be older than them, or younger. But on a personal opinion, I didn't find it disgusting.

message 18: by Hallie, I'm all about the books (new)

Hallie (inkyhallie) | 5470 comments Mod
Hunger Games? Well, I found it to be similar to that of Divergent. Only the best will remain, struggle for existence.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Aaron(Reblast) wrote: "I don't approve of that in a book for young adults. I find it repulsive. What message does this send young adults?"

It isn't supposed to teach young adults that the games are good. In the Hunger Games series, the games are a way for the antagonist to scare people into not rebelling.

I don't see anything I can do to change the ardent opinion of a reader, and will no longer try to do that either, but strictly stick to my belief.

message 23: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Richardson (goodreadscommellea77) | 6 comments The Hunger Games books were harsh and violent. The Harry Potter series also had some harsh and violent scenes especially in the last few volumes. That being said, LIFE is brutal, harsh and violent. Just because a writer finds a new colorful way to spin it doesn't make it less true. This is something we shouldn't hide from our kids. Just watching the news shows how dark and dangerous our world really is. They need to know that there are horrible, terrible people in the world. But they also need to know that there is good in this world also. They need to believe that they can strive to be good and faithful, trustworthy and strong. The messages in these books are not just about violence and death, they are about finding the courage to stand against those that are unjust and finding courage within themselves. Maybe the most important thing a kid can learn is EMPATHY. It is built within the pages of every fiction book. When the characters suffer, we suffer. When they triumph, we triumph. It's a wonderful way to teach our kids about the world and about themselves. Hiding them from it does them no justice.

You're perspective is indeed intriguing.

message 25: by Ellison (new)

Ellison Huang (ellie_huang) I prefer Harry Potter

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) Harry Potter. I just find his world so much more inviting and exciting than Katniss Everdeen's.

message 27: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Eisenmeier (carpelibrumbooks) | 81 comments Harry Potter. Katniss/Peeta/Gale love triangle in the Hunger Games and the whole dystopian thing turned me off; it seems like every third book has a love triangle going on, with two boys fighting over a girl. I was glad J.K. Rowling didn't have Harry and Ron both in love with Hermione in Harry Potter. It's the same with dystopian novels- every third book is dystopian. I don't mind dystopian novels or love triangles too much, but not when it's every third book.

Melissa, I didn't think about the Harry and Ron thing before.

message 29: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Eisenmeier (carpelibrumbooks) | 81 comments I probably wouldn't have either, but one of my Facebook friends posted something about how she's glad J.K. Rowling didn't turn it into a love triangle with Hermione, Ron, and Harry.

So true.

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

I honestly cannot choose. I have read them both and they are very, very good.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Melissa, to me the Hunger Games is a story about a girls path to survival, not the love triangle.

I thought the same as well. But I find many with Melissa's opinion.

message 34: by Alia (new)

Alia While Hermione brags about her logic and it's a plot point, Katniss's understanding of "odds" as some kind of ruling force like karma or fate is somehow much more interesting.

message 35: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany | 28 comments I liked them both, but prefer Harry potter. I'm a huge fan of the magical world Rowling created.

Sally | 22 comments I CAN'T CHOOSE!

message 38: by Marieke (new)

Marieke The Hunger Games is one of the fews instances where I preferred the movies over the books, so you could say I think Harry Potter's a better read. Then again, this might be mainly so because I discovered and read the Harry Potter Books as a young adult, i.e. in my teens, whereas I just recently read The Hunger Games books. Main 'complaint' which I had with the latter was mainly because it was clearly written for an audience younger than me, as a result of which I couldn't get into it as I did whith Harry Potter. Of course this isn't much of a complaint as the books are intended to cater for a younger audience.

This all being said, the question remains wether, if up until now I hadn't read the Harry Potter Books, would I be as much into them as I am now? I'd like to think so, as I have reread them a few times and still enjoyed them very much. But rereading books (or reading an new book in a serie which you already enjoyed very much) is different, I think, than picking up a new serie: you already have positive associations with it. So for me it is impossible to tell if I like the Harry Potter series better because they indeed are more detailed and better worked out (as my argument would be), or because they adhere to an already acquired taste/liking for the books.

In the end, I still prefer the Harry Potter books though

message 39: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa (isy_anne) | 4 comments When the HP books were published I wasn't really into reading...sadly true incipit.
Anyway, I only read 4 and 5 when I was about 12, enjoyed them, but then had no interest in reading more.
This said, though I did not grow up with the HP books, I grew up watching the movies as they were coming out. So when I was 20 I decided to read the whole series and LOVED it, reread it and loved i t again. but I have to say, I guess a part of me liked it so much because of the memories I link to these stories (movies, yes, but still, stories). I do not mean the writing or the story aren't wonderfully done, obviously, because they are.
This said, I have bought HGames and will read the series soon, but I don't expect the same attachment I feel for HP.

Hallie, they are nothing alike. NOTHING!
Divergent is trash compared to Hunger Games!

message 41: by Steffi (last edited Apr 26, 2017 02:08AM) (new)

Steffi (steffiw) | 18 comments I have to disagree with you there Rich, I think it's the other way around. Divergent was so much better, except maybe for the ending but its still too soon to talk about that!
I might be in the minority here but I just didn't enjoy the Hunger Games. The concept was great but I just couldn't warm to any of the characters and the love triangle was incredibly annoying.

Harry Potter on the other hand is amazing!! I'm currently reliving it with the audio books which are fantastic!

I beg to differ as well, Rich. I actually loved Divergent over Hunger Games, and the main reason would be the same as Steffi mentioned above.

However, that is a whole different topic on its own, and even though I wrote that post almost 2 years ago, I can assure you I was talking about the correspondence between the lesson I learnt from the two series.
