A few things you can do while waiting for Landslide to begin:
a) Participate in another discussion like Rubicon or Last Call which is a buddy read.
by
Tom Holland
by
Daniel Okrent
b) Take a look at the Glossary - you will find a lot of valuable information there on LBJ and Reagan: we will be adding to the glossary as we read the book so that you have a valuable resource.
Here is the link:
/topic/show/...
c) Take a look at the Bibliography - you will find a lot of great books about LBJ, Reagan and books that the author Jonathan Darman consulted when writing this book. There are also links to oral histories, manuscripts and other written historical material which you will find interesting. You should become very familiar with this thread because if there are books and synopses that you would like to take a look at which come to mind when you are reading and discussing this selection, this is the thread where you will add them. This is another thread which is continually added to while we are discussing the book.
Here is the link:
/topic/show/...
d) If you are new to discussions and group reads, you might want to take a look at the thread called - "How to Jump into Discussions" to get some helpful hints on how to critically read and comment upon what you have read.
Here is the link:
/topic/show/...
e) Learn how we do citations and add books to The History Book Club posts and threads. Spend some time becoming familiar with these techniques and we even have a thread where you can practice and get assistance from the moderators.
Here is the link to this useful thread:
/topic/show/...
And here is the link to the Mechanics of the Board thread where you can practice if you like with the assistance of the moderators who are here to help you.
Here is the link:
/topic/show/...
e) We also have a thread set up for the author Jonathan Darmon who was supposed to be joining us for the discussion. I do hope that he is still able to pop in and answer our questions.
Here is the link to that thread and of course everybody is responsible for posting some great questions for Jonathan to answer.
/topic/show/...
f) As part of T's and C's everybody is responsible for writing a review at the end of reading and discussing the book. The review and your rating is entirely your own - we only ask that it be respectful of both the work and the author. That review needs to be placed first on the Book as a Whole and Final Thoughts thread which is a spoiler thread. A disclaimer must be placed at the end of the review indicating that you got the book free from the History Book Club. There is an example on this thread for you. This is the mandate of the FTC and not a mandate of either Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ or The History Book Club.

g) Additionally, folks are always interested in the Table of Contents and the Syllabus for the book. The Table of Contents is posted on the TOC thread already but the Syllabus will be published as soon as I know that the books have been mailed out.
Here is the thread where you can find the Table of Contents and the Syllabus when it becomes available.
/topic/show/...
h) When you post for the first time, it is normal for folks to wonder who you are if you have not posted before in a previous discussion. Make sure if you have not done this already - to allow folks to know who you are and that you are not a lurker - be sure to post a brief intro on the welcome page.

I am hoping to start the book discussion on December 1st but it might be tight - we need to know when the books are actually mailed out - that usually takes a couple of weeks for all of them to reach their mark.
It should be Bryan - the publisher now has the list so I will wait to hear back from them about when the books will be mailed out. I am hoping we can start by December 1st but we will have to see. Random House has always been spectacular about things - so I have my fingers crossed - that all will be well now.

Sorry Shana - the offer is closed. Sometimes we have those kinds of deals too - but it was a one off. We would have had more but we have a huge number of UK members and they did not take advantage of that situation. So I am not sure that we will have that opportunity in the near future.
The good news is that the book is available on Kindle, Amazon, local bookstores like Barnes and Noble and Powell's.

Lucky Group Recipients: Random House has confirmed today that the books will be in the mail this week. We will receive confirmation of the day when all books are actually in the mail and I will pass that information on to all of you.

Kim, it is too late for the free offer but not too late for you to acquire your own copy. Your local bookstore will have a copy as well as Barnes and Noble, Amazon, Kindle, Powell's etc. We hope you can join us.

The read will start on December 1, 2014, Justin. I know you will enjoy participating in your first book discussion.
Martin wrote: "I've started. The premise (laid out in the prologue), juxtaposing LBJ and Raygun, is intriguing, and I'd never before thought of LBJ's landslide as the end of an era, although that seems obvious no..."
First, Martin no spoilers. We will be starting soon.

Great Dave, Christopher, Cary, and Rebecca. Remember before December 1st do not get ahead - only read the Prologue and Chapter One.

Great Holly, Steve, Jerome and Christopher great - just don't go beyond Chapter One so you can keep up with the discussion and not have to reread. More fun that way.
Thank you David and thank you Jack. Only read the Prologue and Chapter One until December 1st and then follow the weekly syllabus.

Just keep up with us and no spoilers. I will have the further week's syllabus up later today. I jus..."
My book has arrived

Terrific Chef and make sure that you only read the Prologue and Chapter One before the first week December 1st and follow the syllabus on a weekly basis thereafter. Understood.
Also Peter Flom thank you for letting us know you also have the book.
