This folder is for books that either take place in Asia, or are written by an Asian author. It's up to you!

Please share your suggestions, or any resources you've used to help find your book for this category in this thread.

Amanda | 229 comments I am reading "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" because it was chosen for our book club this year.
Other suggestions:
And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini
Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden

±·²¹³Ùá±ô¾±²¹ Lopes (silkcaramel) I'm thinking either Memoirs of a Geisha or Soundless, by Richelle Mead for this one!

Sam F | 29 comments I may read The Hundred Secret Senses as I loved Amy Tan's other books, but I also am considering And the Mountains Echoed as I enjoyed his other books too! Such a dilemma :)

And the Mountains Echoed was not as good as his other two. Just my opinion.

Sam F | 29 comments Thanks for letting me know - I may go with Amy Tan's book then for now.

Memoirs of a Geisha is nice. Funny in places, interesting frank description of the geisha life. Nice love story. Loved the movie too.

Valerie | 280 comments I am going with The Bonesetter's Daughter. I love Amy Tan, and this sounds really good. Since Amy is from Oakland/San Francisco, and, a lot of her books are about Chinese-Americans that take place in America...I wanted to be sure that the book I choose by her was one that actually took place in Asia. (At least part of it does) This one does, and looks good. (Also had to be one I have not read...which that in and of itself is sometimes hard. )

This book could also be used for from Point of View of Immigrant, so if I see something else here that looks good...I might switch this over to that.

I also am thinking of going with Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat. I like to read to my granddaughter, and this book looks interesting. I like to explore children's literature as well.

Tiffany McIntosh I'm going with Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity . I just started it but will finish in 2016 so that counts, right? It reads like fiction, even though it is non-fiction. I definitely wish it was fiction sometimes.

Mal (manal_amirzahi) I have a A Thousand Splendid Suns sitting on my shelf so I'm going to go with that. The Kite Runner was emotionally devastating but an incredible read so I'm looking forward to this.

The list of countries in Asia provide the opportunity for quite a variety of reading.

Vera Theus | 7 comments I have just finished Banana Yoshimoto's N.P.
Great book!

Teresa (teremazon) This has been the most difficult category for me so far. I've had the same questions as Valerie. I wanted to read Songs of Willow Frost by Jamie Ford. I think at least a chunk of the action happens in Seattle, but perhaps some other chunks happen in Asia? I am not completely sure, but I think he is also second generation American? It might not be a very good choice. I need to keep thinking. I'm sure I'm bound to have a few candidates in my kindle that I don't even remember.

Teresa (teremazon) Found one! After combing my kindle for a while, decision made: I will be reading Waiting by Ha Jin

D | 9 comments My book is The Rice Mother by Rani Manicka.

message 18: by Frogli (new)

Frogli | 118 comments I am still undecided for this category, but I have three options already sitting on my to read shelf The Ghost Bride, The Incarnations & A Thousand Splendid Suns.

I'll probably go for one of those as I am trying to make a dent in my to read list. Unless I get distracted by something else...

Valerie | 9 comments I read The Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers. It was an assigned book for my American Lit class. It takes place in Iraq during the Iraq War. It was a haunting story.

±·²¹³Ùá±ô¾±²¹ Lopes (silkcaramel) I'm almost finished with Soundless by Richelle Mead, and so far it's an OK book. The ending is frustrating me a little, but still entertaining.

message 21: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Hillring (dakkster) The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu was excellent sci-fi.

message 22: by Mary Sue (new)

Mary Sue I read The Lover by Marguerite Duras. It was set in Indochina (now Vietnam).

message 23: by Cristine (last edited May 20, 2016 08:52PM) (new)

Cristine | 44 comments I'm reading Confessions by Kanae Minato... so far Wow!!

message 24: by Allison (new)

Allison Burke | 1 comments Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah is a great book too!

message 25: by QueenAmidala28 (new)

QueenAmidala28 It's interesting that I keep seeing Hosseini listed here; I've always classified him as a MIDDLE EASTERN author being that his culture is vastly different than that of "typical" Asian authors coming from China or Japan or even Russia. I don't classify Tolstoy or Gogol as Asian either . . .
Anyway, I recommend The Love Wife by Gish Jen , A Free Life by Ha Jin , anything by Pearl S. Buck , and Sisters of Heart and Snow by Margaret Dilloway .Oh, and two of my favorites: Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua and A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki .

message 26: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Hillring (dakkster) The Middle East is part of the continent of Asia.

message 27: by Casey (new)

Casey (casey-h) | 4 comments I read A Midsummer's Equation by Keigo Higashino, book three of the his Detective Galileo series. If you like mysteries, this series is a good pick. They don't need to be read in order, but I'd say The Devotion of Suspect X and Salvation of a Saint were both better reads.

Also, another good one was Out.
