MJ | 900 comments Too many options to choose from! For a bunch of these categories I won't be able to choose a book until I'm looking for a book to read: if I choose them all now, I will want to change my mind!

I always create my plan and then change it about a million times. I try to consider it all part of the process :P

Wild was one of my favorite books from my 2015 challenge. I hope you enjoy it!

Jenna ✨DNF Queen✨Here, Sometimes... (jennabgemini) | 243 comments Mine will change a ton too I'm sure... dang I have wild on my tbr, might add it as an option alongside Beatrix Potter :)

message 5: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments I am a big plan changer too. This year I'm going to try and stick to it because I've got so many challenges. We'll see though...

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail was one of my least favorite books from the 2015 challenge so I'm also interested to hear your thoughts. But even though I hated it, I'm hopeful that it agrees with you! :D

MJ | 900 comments We shall see how I feel about Wild, since Laura says it was her favourite from 2015 and Emm liked it the least! I liked the movie, which means nothing in terms of liking the book, and I remember a lively Facebook conversation where LOTS of people hated it because of how many inexperienced newbie hikers were going to get in trouble on remote trails because of her irresponsibility (or something to that effect).

Ha I noticed that! Just shows you how differently a book can affect people. re: the FB convo you read, This is definitely a concern of mine... hubby and I are big hikers and I might find myself being critical of it however it also might be great. It amazes me how people blame others so frequently for being uninformed (or in this case, it sounds like people are suggesting that her behavior will cause others to put themselves in danger. I don't think it says anywhere movie or book that this is a hiking guide, lol... its no ones fault but their own if someone uses a story as one and gets themselves in trouble.

I think she's pretty clear in the book that she was unprepared. And she goes on quite a bit about how miserable she was because of it. I can't really see someone being dumb enough to read the book and be inspired to be equally unprepared. If so, I think they would be unprepared with or without having read the book ;)

But I know plenty of people disliked it due to her complaining/preparation. I just found it relatable since it would be tremendously difficult to predict just how hard that hike would be. Regardless, I'm interested to see which side your opinion will be on :)

No! I'm hoping to overlap as many as possible! I've been sucked into the hype of other members and their ambitiousness! I'll be impressed if I get through the group's list!

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments I have read a fair few reviews that named her lack of preparation as their chief grievance with the book, but that wasn't mine. To be completely honest, I didn't like her. I thought she a self-centered twit who had a history of engaging in risky behaviors whenever her life wasn't pleasing her and, in the process, hurting those around her. Much of her strife is a result of her own selfish concerns and actions. But that's life and if this had been a story about redemption then it would have resonated more with me. Instead she decides to engage in yet another risky behavior to contemplate all the other reckless things she has done (as well as the death of her mother). I feel impressed by her ability to complete a treacherous hike with no experience by pure concentration of willpower and persistence but, aside from that, I felt that she never grew or matured as a character. I don't feel like she "found" herself, so to speak. Even on the trail she was still trying to engage in behaviors that she herself attributed to causing some of the woes in her life. Since the author hiked the trail alone, you get to spend a lot of time in her head. I found her a very disagreeable "character" so it was difficult to enjoy this book.

She does suffer quite a bit for being ill-prepared to hike, as Laura said, so I do not understand how anyone could read this and think it sounded like an inviting idea. If so, perhaps they should read Into the Wild and see it from the other side of the coin. It could have gone quite wrong.

MJ | 900 comments After finishing For The Term of His Natural Life, I am at a loss for what to read next. This book was so depressing, I need something happy. I was planning on a Stephen King novel next, but I don't think I'll find a happy one.

message 12: by MJ (new)

MJ | 900 comments Currently reading The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins for 16. A book from the top 100 mystery novels.

This one is going slower than I expected. After reading several fast-pace novels that I was able to read within a few days, this one is dragging.

Looking through my list makes me want to delete the items I've already read, rather than crossing them out. Maybe I will copy and paste the list into another comment, and then delete from that one as I go along? I don't like having to scroll up and down to see what I want to tackle.

That is such a good point!

I've already moved one or two books from this year to next year's challenge because i know i won't finish this!

I was skeptical of this one for some reason until I picked it up. It made me laugh out loud. And cry. I've been in downsize mode for several years and I've decided to only read books on this challenge that I can get at the library. I might break down and buy this one.

MJ | 900 comments We are at the end of the year, and this is what I have left. Somewhere along the way, my bookshelf and comment list above decided not to match anymore - argh.

6. The highest rated on your TBR
The Name of the Wind

21. A book from the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Recommendations page
Orson Scott Card's InterGalactic Medicine Show

23. The next book in a series you are reading
Orson Scott Card - Earth Afire

33. The 16th book on your TBR

34. A book about mental illness

47. A book with a type of food/drink in the title
the house on mango street

49. A book with a great opening line
Rebecca

I will finish 47 - the house on mango street today, and I plan to finish 23 - Earth Afire before year's end. I put a request at the library for The Name Of The Wind a month or so ago and I will probably get a copy in February!

A copy of the book for 21 is waiting for me at the library today, and it will be my first book of 2017.
#16 on my tbr is by a Russian author (not Tolstoy), it's a 600 pager and I will not get to it this year.
I'm not even mentioning 34 and 49... oh well!!

I read a few books this year that did not fit into this list (I was in a remote field camp for two months this summer and made do with the "library" there plus the books I brought with me, so that's part of the reason I didn't stay on track).
Overall, I am happy with what I accomplished this year reading-wise.

Michelle (mich2689) | 484 comments I hope you do get your hands on The Name of the Wind soon! It's one of my favorite books ever!

33. The 16th book on your TBR

Dostoevsky's Notes from the Underground

Orson Scott Card's... (#21) will be my first book of 2017.
