Joshua Hood, firstly thank you so much for sending a signed copy of your debut book and oh what a start!
Debut author, Joshua Hood, isn’t just a solid writer, he’s former 82nd Airborne and now a full time SWAT team member.
Clear by Fire is a blistering new military thriller about an American hero who, in order to clear his name, must take down a highly classified band of soldiers that has gone murderously rogue.
Mason Kane was a loyal American soldier and a proud member of the elite, off-the-books Anvil Program—a group of black ops soldiers who wage war from the shadows. But all that changed when his commander, as a part of a twisted scheme to force America’s continued involvement in the Middle East, ordered an innocent Afghan family murdered. Refusing the order, Mason finds himself on the run, hunted by his former comrades and labeled a terrorist by the country he served faithfully. Relying only on his survival skills and the help of female Special Operations operative Renee Hart, Kane must embark on his gravest mission yet: unraveling the conspiracy that reaches all way to the President’s inner circle and stopping the world’s most dangerous soldiers from completing their treacherous plan.
A highly realistic narrative that puts you in the middle of the action with Hood capturing the full effect of cordite detonation, smells of vengeful death, and the unbroken bonds of camaraderie in combat.
Set in the shadows of the War on Terror, this realistic, action-packed adventure puts a twist in the traditional military thriller and starts a brand-new series, and now eagerly awaiting the chapter in Mason's life.
If you enjoy authors such as Brad Thor, Lee Childs, Tom Wood,Ben Coes and David Baldacci and Chris Ryan, you're going to love Joshua Hood. Scot Harvath, Jack Reacher, Mitch Rapp, Victor, Dewey Andreas, Will Robie and Geordia Sharp have a new contemporary in Mason Kane and let's not forget the great Renee Hart.
A exciting, fast paced , action packed, character filled, brutal rollercoaster ride
Five stars , a great debut novel

It wasn't on my favorites list either.

The Gregor Demarkian series is excellent. I've enjoyed a few of them so far.

An American secret agent is tasked with stopping the complete destruction of the U.S plan..."
I Am Pilgrim was a good book but I do agree with you that the foreshadowing was heavy handed.

I'm also starting with The Weatherman which starts off with a murder and then a deadly tornado and some flashbacks to a Vietnam napalm attack that leaves a man badly disfigured. The cast of characters are basically the TV crew and weatherman. It's a little odd but I'm interested in how everything connects.
Good books I've recently read are: Child 44 a cold war mystery in the Soviet Union in 1953. It stars a member of the Secret Police who's exiled when he attempts to investigate a series of child murders. 5 Stars
Also The Cold Cold Ground which takes place in Northern Ireland in 1981 during the time of the troubles, the IRA & the UVF and involves a policeman trying to track down a killer that appears to be targeting gay men. 4 Stars

Oh! I love Stuart Kaminsky's books especially his Inspector Porfiry Rostnikov mysteries - if you haven't read them yet I recommend them. I haven't finished his other series but I'm getting to them:)

A lot of people hated that book. I liked it but perhaps its because I'm on the autistic spectrum and really knew what the struggles were. I didn't like the next book at all - The Rosie Effect - because the character development was very poorly done. imho I still identified with his struggles but the rest of the story suffered from lack of character development.

I also enjoyed both The Cold Cold Ground and Child 44.

Just started listening to

Denise, I've read a few Inspector Porfiry Rostnikov books. I agree, they're excellent.
Yesterday I finished Phantom Lady, by Cornell Woolrich. I'm now reading The Narcotic Farm: The Rise and Fall of America's First Prison for Drug Addicts, nonfiction.

I also finished The Good Goodbye which was also very good:

I'm almost finished with When the Emperor Was Divine and I just started The Last Days of Rabbit Hayes

Personally I liked it but we all have different tastes. Move on to a new one if it is that bad for you. Life is too short and there are too many good books(for all of us:)) to finish a bad one.

Skim it or maybe there are cliff notes for it, lol. Good luck.

If only I'd seen your comments before starting Pretty Girls
I gave it a 2 star but I might have been overly generous.
The more I think about it the more I realize the plot was one of the stupidest things I've read in a while requiring you to believe in giant conspiracies that span decades involving multiple people, and of course Nobody to trust in law enforcement with a main character so dense that she noticed nothing because she was too rich and her house was too big to actually explore.
Not to mention that we were treated to excessive descriptions of women being raped and mutilated. I've never read Karin Slaughter before and I think I'm going to avoid her books in the future.

Well Said Yvonne! I feel exactly the same! It was horribly ridiculous and needlessly detailed the brutal rape/mutilation/murder of young girls. And, that there were sooooooo many men involved who all happened to be in Law Enforcement. RIGHT?!?!?!?!?
Another book that was just as stupid and along the exact same lines is The Guest Room

Not familiar with this author but I saw this on sale on Amazon. Sounded good and had good reviews.

Agreed. And now that I've finally read this one, I can skip ahead and pick up the series where I left off. IIRC, I have ten titles left to read as of now. Lots of Gregor and Bennis still to come!

I enjoy Burke's books.

Just finished

I finished The Narcotic Farm: The Rise and Fall of America's First Prison for Drug Addicts, and added to my knowledge of American social/cultural history as well as the history of science. What is now a federal prison in Lexington KY used to be a prison/hospital for narcotics addicts (starting around 1935) but later it came to be a research center, where the prisoners were used as subjects in experiments so scientists could try to understand addiction. Fascinating book, it's a companion to a PBS documentary that I also watched.

Good critique, and I'm with you. I will not read her books again. There must be a lot of blood thirsty people out there who like gore rather than a good plot.

4 stars.

This sounds like an interesting series. I'm surprised I haven't heard of it.

Firstly thank you to Net Galley, the publishers and the author Kyle Mills for an advanced copy for an honest review. Apologies for the delay, and my book reading ..."
If you enjoy Vince Flynn & Mitch Rapp be sure to check out Ben Coes. The first novel in his series is Power Down. The main character, Dewey Andreas, would make Mitch proud. I'll have to check out Kyle Mills as well. Let me know what you think.

I didn't include this one in my original book choices for my challenge, but I'm soon going to be reading Phantom Lady, by Cornell Woolrich, & I have the movie, so I'll just add it on to my challenge list.
