The Alternates:
Each number corresponds with the spot on the board.
For colors: The cover has to be at least 50%
For locations: As long as the book takes part at all in the given location .
For Shelves: Any book on the given shelf
For Publication Years: I'll be using how GR has it's publication date listed.
For Authors Names: The first, middle, or last name of the author is ok.
For Cover Items: Must have the given item on the cover
For Titles: Only the first word of the title. A, An, And, and The do not count.
So if the letter is B: The Best Day would be ok. Dear Betty would not be ok.

LaurLa | 3758 comments HI team!!! I can't wait to get started!!!

Let's break some ice...

Where are you from (and what time zone is that)? Me: near Indianapolis, IN - eastern time zone

What is your favorite genre? Me: romance romance romance

Did you join this challenge for the team aspect, the help with getting caught up with series or just because it sounded like fun? Me: to be honest, this time for all three. But the first time I joined was to get caught up on series, then I learned how fun team challenges can be :-P

message 9: by Jamie (last edited Jan 11, 2016 09:45AM) (new)

Jamie | 798 comments Hi,

I live in NYC so Eastern time zone. I read almost everything but I read a lot of romances because most of the time I just want to escape! And I love series because they're usually familiar once you've read the first... same town or same couple. When I was a kid I read all of the Trixie Belden, Nancy Drews and Agatha Christies I could so my love of series has been life long.

I joined because my goal this year is to get through all the series I've started AND because I love team challenges and interacting with others who love reading.

ETA: How could I forget! One of the first books I read on my own was Little House in the Big Woods so my series love started early!!!

message 10: by NayNay (new)

NayNay I live in Ontario, Canada so Eastern time zone

My favourite genre is Historical Fiction...I love the Tudor Era anything Medieval. But I read a book sometime two a day so whatever I can get my hands on and if it is a good book I will read it no matter what genre.

I joined because of team interaction, and believe it or not to find new titles to add to my forever growing TBR list. I used to be a big series reading, but then I found I would get to frustrated waiting for the next book, or if it was a series that was out for awhile I had to read book after book. I know, I know a little OCD.

I am a little OCD myself when it comes to series! When I got my kindle a few years ago and I started acquiring more and more books, I was naturally drawn to series. Like Jamie, something about the comfort and the familiarity. Anyway, somewhere along the line I decided that I would not start a series until I had acquired all of the books in the series or, in the case of really long running series, until I had most of them because like you Nay Nay, I couldn't stand not having the next book to read right away. Of course, I still run into that with on-going series... So now my TBR consists of books that I'm 'allowed' to read because they are stand alone or are completed series and those I'm 'not allowed' to read because I don't have the entire series. Sometimes that makes me feel a bit schizophrenic!

I have found, though, that since I've gotten more involved with reading challenges (both indiv and team), I don't feel the need to finish a series one book right after another like I used to. But I still have a bajillion open series to read, so challenges like this one that incorporate both are perfect for me!

I'm in Tampere, Finland, which puts me in time zone GMT+2.

Favourite genre... oooooh boy. I read a lot of different genres, but I guess favourites would be fantasy (epic, urban, ... anything!) and historical fiction, and I won't say no to some M/M romance thrown in with either. Generally when it comes to romance of any sort, I prefer it in a fantasy/paranormal or historical context, I'm not much of a contemporary romance reader. I also enjoy mysteries a lot, preferably of the gritty, action-packed variety rather than their tamer cozy counterparts. Aaand... no, I'll stop now. XD

As for joining the challenge, definitely all three! I've played every round so far and have lots of fun every time. Looks like we've got a chatty team, which is great and a nice change from my last few teams. :) And it's a great way to finally get me to continue at least some of the huge bunch of series where I'm stuck at book 1 or 2 because I had so much other stuff to read that I kinda forgot about them. Looking forward to picking a few of those up again and maybe even start a new one!

NayNay, does that mean you're out? Either way, family definitely takes precedence over this, we totally understand.

Jamie, what's your vote on the group name?

I like First Ladies, I'd be for either that or First Class Readers out of the suggestions we have on the table so far.

We kinda need to get a move on picking a captain and all, since we're starting tomorrow... I can do it if nobody else wants to, just lemme know. (I'm not competitive enough to get up at 8am on Sundays to roll, though... so if you want to roll ASAP we're gonna need someone else to be designated roller. ;) )

message 19: by LaurLa (new)

LaurLa | 3758 comments Denise, do you want to co-captain? I'm also captaining in the regular challenge, so didn't want to take on more than I could chew. But if we want to do it together, I could do that. We could split duties between Thursdays and Sundays, or something. I'm with you about the roll. I'm usually up around that time on Sundays so could do the roll at least. Thoughts?

And my vote is for First Class Readers :-)

message 20: by Denise, Manufacturing Director (new)

Denise (destiny_chan) | 7336 comments Mod
I might end up being captain in the regular one, too - nobody wants to be captain anywhere! XD So co-captains for this one sounds good. On Thursdays at least I'm up at 9am usually (My work schedule is weird. Don't judge. :P), that's 1am Central, so I could roll early-ish on those.

message 21: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 798 comments I like First Class Readers

And apologies for not being around, I've been setting up Bingo over in the M/M group so my online time has been focused on getting that up and running.

I'm not fussy on when we roll, as I noted midnight central is 1am for me so it's unlikely I'll even be awake. If we're in the mix at the end that's different (I've been known to stay up into the wee hours for past rounds of this game) but for the bulk of the game any time is fine by me.

Normally I don't read books during this time period (WW1) but this book was well done and I really enjoyed it. For a non fiction book if flowed with ease, there were no slow parts, in fact I did not want to put it down. What really made this book interesting, was how Larson makes the characters come alive, you really connect with them, knowing what the end result was going to be you really felt for them. Also I think the research was well done. I am glad that I decided to read Dead Wake, I highly recommend it.

Magic in the Shadows by Devon Monk
Qualification: Allie Beckstrom #3
Finished: 15 Jan 2016
Rating: ★★★★

Review:
Allie's father might be dead, but he's nowhere near as gone as she'd like. Instead, he appears to have taken up residence in her head, capable not only trying to talk her into doing his bidding but even taking control of her magic for brief periods of time. That's not the only thing she has to deal with, though: One of her Hounds might be in serious trouble, there's some truly dark and twisted magic loose on the streets of Portland that appears to be targeting her, and last but not least, the Authority demands she pass a test of her control and skill with her magic or have it and her memories taken away for good.

There's a lot going on here, the story progresses at a fast pace and there's plenty of action all the way through. We get to learn a lot more about the Authority and this world's magic system, which will certainly be expanded on further in the next books. There are also a number of interesting new characters on the page in this one - I really liked Shamus and hope he'll stick around. Still not a big fan of Zayvion, so I don't really care much for the romance part, but thankfully there's plenty of story aside from that to keep me reading.

Review:
This was a duel romance as they all have been in this series but the main romance (the one described in the blurb) was not nearly as good as the 'side' romance. The author gave more attention to detail in building that relationship than in the main relationship. The main romance was a second chance trope and I didn't feel like the author really had the lovers resolve the reasons for the break-up in the first place. I was really disappointed in how these two came together - it just lacked something for me. If not for the other romance, this might now have made it to 3 stars.

Review: this is a true series in that the story is building book by book. So far we're following the same couple, Sloane and Dex although I know later there are other couples. I think Cochet does a good job balancing the mystery/suspense aspect with building the world and the relationships of the whole team. I was glad to learn more about Ash and Cael and to get more back story for Sloane. The mystery requires some suspension of disbelief but it's fun. And Dex is still hysterical.

Perfume The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind

Set in 18th-century France, Perfume relates the fascinating and horrifying tale of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, a person as gifted as he was abominable. Born without a smell of his own but endowed with an extraordinary sense of smell, Grenouille becomes obsessed with procuring the perfect scent that will make him fully human. Suskind exposes the dark underside of the society through which Grenouille moves and explores the disquieting inner universe of this singularly possessed man.

This story moved very quickly, although it did have some dry moments and some really gross moments too, it still was a very interesting read. It was an fascinating book, it would have been 5 stars but the grotesque moments personally could have done without.
