Pink | 5491 comments Is there a classic book that you'd like to buddy read?

If you're interested in reading a specific book, outside of the group reads, then here's the place to post and find a buddy!

I plan to read Kristin Lavransdatter by Sigrid Undset starting in March -- I'll nominate for the next long read, but if it doesn't win I'd love to buddy read it with someone (or two or more).

I would LOVE to read Kristin Lavransdatter with you. I hope it wins the next long read (fingers crossed) but if not, hopefully (again fingers crossed), I can get started a month early.

Yes --- keep our fingers crossed! By March we will know if it wins for the Long Read starting in April -- if that is the case I will probably wait until April. If it doesn't win, I plan to start in March.

Bat-Cat | 986 comments Kathy wrote: "Yes --- keep our fingers crossed! But we can start our buddy read earlier. You want to start in February or March? I'm thinking a three month read. One month for each book."

Let me give that some thought and get back to you. Hopefully it will be no problem (March looks more possible than February). I've got a few longer books to finish up first.

That scenario sounds great Kathy. Consider me in on that one.

A group of us are reading The Forsythe Saga in April for our challenge lists. Anyone else who would like to join in would be most welcomed. I set up a folder for the read and hope that I have done it correctly!

Thank you, Pink. It seems a lot of us had this on a challenge list this year.

message 10: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments I think buddy reads might work out well this year for people with the same books on their challenge lists.

Philina | 1085 comments Pink wrote: "I think buddy reads might work out well this year for people with the same books on their challenge lists."

I totally agree!
It was a very good idea to start this threat and to make all the group members aware of this possibility.
I, for example, didn't know about it...

message 12: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments I've now mentioned and linked this post in the 'How our group works' thread so hopefully more people will be aware it exists! I think the more buddy reads that take place, the more people will see it's a feature and maybe join in.

Thanks, Pink. I can see myself involved in lots of buddy reads this year.

message 16: by Bat-Cat (new)

Bat-Cat | 986 comments Hi Everyone, I have been a longtime Downton Abbey watcher and am, as are many, sad that it is the final season. However, to my great joy, I recently discovered that Julian Fellowes has a new project up his sleeve that is starting April 8th!!!! I, for one, will definitely be participating in it and I thought, if there were any other takers, we might start a group read and have some fun with it. I know, I have kept you in suspense long enough. Here is the link to the website - - please let me know what you think.

What!!!!! How is this the first I've heard. I am very tempted. What a neat "period" idea!

Bat-Cat | 986 comments Kathy wrote: "What!!!!! How is this the first I've heard. I am very tempted. What a neat "period" idea!"

Yes, it looks way fun - I'm sure there will be others interested in it. And since the book is only 352 pages it works out to about 30 pages a week which is totally doable!!!!

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments Thank you Bat-Cat for mentioning this.

I don't have TV set and have never had a chance to see dT Abbey (I'm sure if like it if I had seen it :))

30 pages a week is very doable!

message 20: by Sara, Old School Classics (new)

Sara (phantomswife) | 8874 comments Mod
Very interesting. If this idea works out, I expect this will be a new way (though it is just like serials in the age of Dickens) to market new books.

message 21: by Teanka (new)

Teanka | 85 comments This looks very intriguing :). I'm saddened that the Downton Abbey series have come to an end, too.

message 23: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 5274 comments Wow! Thank you for sharing this with us Bat-Cat! And bravo to Julian Fellows for being on the cutting edge. I agree with Sara that we can expect more of this, especially since with his track record it is bound to be good and get everyone hooked!

I am a huge Downton Abbey fan, and this does soften the blow of its ending a little. I can imagine the fun of exploring maps and pictures of more gorgeous homes ...

Anyone interested in reading Moby-Dick; or, The Whale sometime in the near future - and as a buddy read??...
I have a feeling that this is a must-read classic.

Let me know...

I would love to read that but my reading dance card is pretty full for the next 3 months or so.

message 26: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 12, 2016 04:19PM) (new)

That's ok Bat-Cat, I totally understand that.
I have a to-read list that is just out of hand, a bookshelf teeming with books that are crying to be read, and a constant need to buy books online.

But...Moby Dick, I'll pick you up out of the blue if I have to... or as a planned venture with anyone else who is willing...

I just posted on the whisper sync deals thread about Moby Dick being the free kindle and audio pairing in the UK. I've just downloaded it for free, so might join in, even though I have a lot else on. March onwards would suit me. Or later in the year if that works for more people.

Kathleen | 5274 comments A few of us (me and Kathy and Desertorum and Darren so far) are planning a buddy read of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, if anyone else is interested. We haven't decided when to start--possibly May or June?

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments Will "Lonely Hunter" work for bingo? How so?

I'm am now interested in it bec Bob mentioned "word pictures." I love that.

I would be interested in reading this anytime after June.

I read Doreen the thread and see you have this set for March. Maybe i will check back in July, when i have more time and comment then. I think this book has revenge as a theme. This would be the second time i would be reading it.

message 37: by Darren (last edited Mar 11, 2016 04:58PM) (new)

Darren (dazburns) | 2104 comments May or June would be ideal for me too (for Lonely Hunter)
(I am absolutely choc-a for March/April!)

Bat-Cat | 986 comments Is there still any interest in War & Peace sometime later this year?

April, May, June -- any would work for me for The Heart is a Lonely Hunter

Bat-Cat wrote: "Is there still any interest in War & Peace sometime later this year?

I would like to try to read War and Peace again. I tried a few years ago, but life got in the way. I would be looking clear out to summer for this one though.

message 40: by Desertorum (new)

Desertorum Also for me May or June would work for The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (June might even be better but whatever works for you!).

War and Peace intrigues me...so I might be in fi it´s later in the year.

I was planning on reading The Heart is a Lonely Hunter in April, but I can bump it back a month or two no problem. I'm in whenever you all want to read it.

message 42: by Nathan (new)

Nathan | 302 comments Does anyone want to read Big Sur by Jack Kerouac?

I've read The Dharma Bums and On the Road, but both were about a decade ago. I'm curious to see if I still enjoy his style.

I'm flexible on start date. :)

message 43: by Bat-Cat (new)

Bat-Cat | 986 comments Just throwing out this idea: Moby Dick read for June onward (summer on the ocean :-) and War & Peace around September?!?!?

message 44: by Philina (new)

Philina | 1085 comments Sounds good, Bat-Cat! If I can join in late for W&P. But as this book is so long the scheduled reading period will be long enough for latecomers.

Katy (kathy_h) | 9449 comments Mod
War and Peace for September sounds great.

As far as Moby-Dick; or, The Whale, I don't think I'm ready to try that one again just yet.

message 46: by Bat-Cat (new)

Bat-Cat | 986 comments Starting W & P in October would also be fine with me. Are there some more takers?

message 47: by Nathan (new)
