Polly Zetterberg | 3 comments As an editor, I am interested in connecting with authors and providing developmental or copy editing services. I have taken a certificate program from University of Washington and Developmental Editing course from Author-Editor Clinic.
What are my best bets for connecting? referrals?

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) I recommend deciding how you want paid, when, and how much. For example, I charge $1 per page with half on hire and half after services are completed. You'll want to make up a Paypal account too, that's honestly the easiest way to get paid and for them to pay you online. Make up a contract authors can fill out for your services so that the agreement is binding as well. You can do that in Word and then save it in PDF to sign. You can make a certified signature in that program so it's all legal.

As far as your certifications, having an online document they can see will help, so if you can scan them and post them on your website (if you need a good free one that's very customizable I like weebly.com, which also lets you have two websites if you like at no charge). Being a good professional and friendly editor will go a long way, as will noting authors who've hired you in the past so that you can reference both your work for examples and have the author recommend you. Always ask if you may do so, however, to make sure they're prepared if another author asks them about you.

Another thing I like to do is ask them to see a sample of the work they'd like you to edit. That way you can see the quality of work you're tackling and you can then ask them if they'd like a sample of your work to make their decision about hiring you.

Polly Zetterberg | 3 comments Thanks, Amanda, for this information. I am aware of the payment tasks (Paypal acct.), and the rate I quote will depend on the type of editing I perform--per word, per page, or for the whole project (most likely in developmental editing).
My basic goal is to connect with active authors, to begin the editing for them. Being new in this freelance arena of work, the basic introductions seem to somehow be the most difficult.

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Best thing to get started is presenting a nice solid place they can learn about you at, once that's going you can start posting around in areas where authors go like authors groups on Facebook and here on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. As long as you appear professional and honest you should be able to start bringing folks in :)

thanks-
I do have a website (), a FB page that is largely devoted to writing and editing areas, a LinkedIn profile.....I am fairly diligent about posting, so hopefully it will all come around soon.

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) If you aren't already, join some authors groups here and on FB, that's where you'll find lots of people looking for editors. I made a blog post specifically to share around to advertise that could help too.
