I am adding Katherine Govier to our Alberta list. I recently saw her present at the Grimsby Author Series, speaking about her newest book The Three Sisters Bar and Hotel. She was born in Edmonton but spends her time between AB and Toronto.

Well, perhaps if I can find some more sheckles, pesos or piasters, I might get my sci-fi fantasy work finished this year. lol

Story (storyheart) I believe Thomas King's Green Grass, Running Water is set in Alberta so it's possible some of his other novels are too.

Some of Tamarind Mem is set in Calgary where the author lived at some point.

Mj Precious Cargo: My Year of Driving the Kids on School Bus 3077 by Craig Davidson is set in Alberta (on of 5 on the Canada Reads 2018 shortlist.) The story could have taken place anywhere but it was definitely set in Alberta, Canada.

Ann-Marie | 158 comments Taking a family vacation this summer to Alberta - specifically Calgary, Banff & Jasper. Thinking about books with settings in this area. Ideas?

message 19: by Wanda (new)

Wanda | 763 comments @Ann-Marie- Your question made me recall a book I read a few years back (compliments of a ŷ giveaway) called Long Change. Parts of the book take place in AB, it's themed around the oil industry and I think in my review I referred to it has Canada's version of "Dallas", it was a rather neat read. I lived in Calgary for some time and it was relatable.

Mj @ Ann-Marie - you might want to check out the Canada Reads Cross Country Challenge for 2017 & 2018 & the current year for the Province of Alberta. You may find some good ideas there.

Also this link in another GR group might be helpful.
/group/books...

I'll give it some further thought when I have a bit more time. Are you looking for books for yourself, your partner, your children or to share. Also are you looking for informational books or stories set in the province? Any special part of the province you're interested in?

Ann-Marie | 158 comments Great suggestions and questions! Its a family vacation so I’d love to inspire my kids to read too (age 9, 11 &13) as I think they will find the trip more relevant with some stories in their mind. I did a google search for one called Jasper, Wild that may be a good one for the kids.

We’re heading to Calgary (for the stampede!) then Banff and then a few days to Jasper before taking the train to Vancouver (and exploring some of BC & Vancouver island).

Particularly looking for stories set in Alberta, possibly non fiction or fiction based on elements of real life. I enjoy seeing a real life setting after reading about it :)

Gail Amendt | 136 comments If your kids are into dinosaurs, and time permits, you might also want to visit Drumheller. I will have to think about book suggestions. I do read some Alberta books, but most are history...pretty dry unless you are a history nerd.

Dan McCarthy | 4 comments Ann-Marie wrote: "Taking a family vacation this summer to Alberta - specifically Calgary, Banff & Jasper. Thinking about books with settings in this area. Ideas?" For the adults, you could pick up The Great Divide: a novelThe Great Divide . It is a fantasy thriller set in the Banff Jasper area with pivotal events set near the Columbia Icefield. Mountain adventure, mystery, ancient creatures - it’s got it all. Available on Amazon.
