Sure, it's set on Pern."
which answers my question: it doesn't have to be a real planet! :)

no, that would be too limiting.

I haven't read it. If it's set on another planet, it works.

Most of it takes place on the moon which isn't really a planet but it is in space. So would it be acceptable?

yep that works - key part is that it's not on Earth.

I haven't read it, but if they stay away from Earth, you're good to go.

Thanks, I think they are firmly in outer space,

I think so. I know the Martian involved some stuff on Earth, but I think it was predominantly off-Earth.

if it's not set on Earth - which could be a little tricky for non-fiction, since presumably the astronomers are on Earth.

The Thief Who Pulled on Trouble's Braids
Although I haven't read it, a friend of mine has and she says: It's steampunk/fantasy blended. Absolutely no resemblance to our world so qualifies as "somewhere other than earth".
I've been browsing through the first pages and the main character lives in a place called Lucernis. There are also characters from a place called Camlach.

If there's nothing to show where it's set, it won't work. Fantasy/alternate history/etc. doesn't necessarily take place off of earth, just because it doesn't resemble our earth - that's the very essence of fantasy.

OK!
Thanks

I haven't read it yet, but it's on my list and my impression that it involves either made-up worlds or travelling outside of Earth.
Is there anyone who's read it who can help me clarify?

If the part on Earth is minor and incidental, then that's okay.
If the part on Earth is minor and incidental, then that's okay.

It's completely incidental, quick scenes to establish why those characters then end up on the moon. Thanks!

"On the Ark, a colony ship bound outward across the stars..." and
"...set against the awesome scope of interstellar space."
Seems like it would be set 'away from Earth' so based on that I sounds like it would qualify? I initially thought it needed to be a 'planet other than Earth' but reread and see 'outer space'.

sure, set in space is fine - doesn't sound like it's on Earth at all.

yes, I've read it and everything important happens off Earth.

To celebrate Miro's round headed characters who look as if they're wearing astronaut helmets, read a book set in outer space or on a planet other than Earth. There must be some indication in the book or the metadata to show that the book is actually set somewhere other than on Earth.
