Missy Jones (sewprissymissy) | 1 comments Just joined. Where do I find assigned books for January?

message 102: by Kaseadillla (new)

Kaseadillla | 1373 comments Mod
Hi missy - if you use a desktop computer you can find them on the homepage. If you’re using the app, go to the First comment on this thread and select the hyperlink to the club’s bookshelf - should be the top three books. Hope that helps!

Hi Sally - they have not been chosen yet, we're actually voting for them as a group right now.
Please see this link for polls if you want to vote: /poll/list/1...

Also, the BOTM FAQ has explanations on nominating, voting, and timing for choosing group books. Link is here: /topic/show/...

Let me know if you have additional questions!

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Hi, Sally!

Books for February are still being chosen, that's why you can't find them yet. :-)

There's a poll going on, ending Jan 8th. You can go there, vote and help choosing. Just click "Polls" on the top right hand corner of the desktop GR page.

message 108: by Mariana (new)

Mariana Is anyone experiencing any trouble at adding up a finished book? This is the second time it's happening to me that a currently reading book that I finish shows the read date when I'm editing but it's not added to my challenge or doesn't show the date in my shelves. Bummer

message 109: by Marcos (last edited Jan 26, 2018 01:05PM) (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Bugs like this are frequent in ŷ. They're usually fixed by the staff. Sometimes quickly, sometimes, quite the other way, it may last weeks.

I have experienced some, but much less than I see people reporting.

Recently I had a bug which prevented me form accessing the "Stats" page. I just waited for some ten days and then it was OK again.

But if a bug is unheard of or disturbs your use of GR, you can:

1. Check discussions. Most likely there's a lot of people with the same experience and GR staff will tell you what is going on and what to expect in that specific discussion thread.

2. READ the discussion before asking again something that has already been answered.

3. If you look thoroughly and don't find one discussion that fits your situation, you can start a new one.

4. If nothing sounds good, ask for help by e-mail: [email protected]

NancyJ (nancyjjj) Mariana, I don't know if this is relevant to what you're seeing, but you might be able to change your settings in My Books to show more data. such as publication date, date started, number of pages, etc. A few times I made changes but I didn't see the button below to save changes.

Jim Townsend | 41 comments NancyJ wrote: "Mariana, I don't know if this is relevant to what you're seeing, but you might be able to change your settings in My Books to show more data. such as publication date, date started, number of pages..."

When you click Settings, at the bottom left-hand side of the Settings menu is a button saying "Save your settings to your ________ shelf". It appears that the settings must be applied separately to each of your shelves.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) We searched the Help function and couldn't find the answers to these related questions.

1) I would like to copy this group's Reading list into My Movies, and create a shelf for it. How can I do that all at once (rather than click on each book one at a time? Basically, I want to use something like "batch edit" but it doesn't show up.

2) Similarly, if I see that a friend has a unique shelf with 10 books that I would also like to read, how can I copy that shelf and/or the 10 books (without clicking on them one at a time.)?

2b) Same scenario, switched people - I have a shelf just for recs for a family member. Now that he has his own account, I want to get those movies off my list and help him get it into his account.

Any suggestions? BTW is there a discussion page somewhere that is dedicated to ŷ how to questions?

Or tech questions related to ebooks, audiobooks, devices, apps. e.g. How to transfer electronic and audio books to different devices?

message 115: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Not sure what the reference to Movies is, but your first batch of questions will get answers in the Feedback Group (especially if asked separately). /group/show/...

Tech questions, I dunno. I just ask my husband because he's a geek.
Um, ebooks from the library, or from OpenLibrary.org, or PDFs, I download to my Android tablet and leave them there until I'm done with them, or until they get automatically 'returned'.
Boughten ebooks are on my kindle app in the amazon cloud, or whatever all those words mean... I can access them on any device even though I don't actually have a Kindle.

Audiobooks from Overdrive at the public library, my husband (view spoiler).

NancyJ (nancyjjj) Cheryl wrote: "Not sure what the reference to Movies is, but your first batch of questions will get answers in the Feedback Group (especially if asked separately). /group/show/......"

Thanks, I'll check it out. I meant MyBooks. My husband was probably saying something about movies and my fingers typed the word. I used to download library audio books into itunes and my old ipod, but it's not working now. I'm listening to Fahrenheit 451 on my laptop which is OK, but my phone would be better.

Unfortunately I don't think there's a way to add all of the group books to your personal bookshelf without doing it 1-by-1. I've given this feedback to ŷ before, not sure where they are on it. Cheryl's link above is what I used too!

Thank you all for the feedback, it seems to be a glitch of the page that sometimes shuffles my stuff

message 119: by Jon (new)

Jon Snow Can we nominate a book that has already been nominated, in this thread:

/topic/show/...

?

message 120: by Marcos (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Hi, Jon.

You can always renominate almost any book.

Sometimes we'd like to read one, it doesn't win, then we renominate it the following month.

Some obvious exceptions:

- if has been read, it shouldn't be renominated.
- it still can be renominated in the "Bookshelf catchup" thread, except if it has been reread recently.

BUT since you sent us for the current month thread (June), I think your doubt may be about expressing your wish to read the same already nominated book. If that is the case, you just "second" that book, by saying "I second xxxx",

You must have noticed it by now.

Hope I have been able to help.

That's exactly right, thanks, Marcos!

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) Will the group be doing anything with PBS's "The Great Amerucan Read" launching May 22 (details l )?

I suspect a lot if their list of 100 books are suited.

message 125: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 728 comments Debbie, that’s a fun idea! I took the quiz and I’ve only read 31 of the 100 books on the list!

message 126: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Wow that's an eclectic list. I've read 36, but most of those are on my to-reread list because I don't remember them. (1984) Lots more I've tried and DNF' (read first Hunger Games, no interest in series), Lots more I wouldn't ever consider (Fifty Shades, Game of Thrones).

That being said, if this group does play along somehow, I'm in.

message 127: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) Thanks for sharing! This deserves it's own discussion topic - maybe in the fun stuff category?

I read 31 for sure (not counting DNFs) but there are 10-12 titles I'm not sure about. If I didn't read them, I saw the films. Like Cheryl, there are a few I wouldn't bother reading.

message 128: by Karen (new)

Karen | 131 comments I too have read 31 of the 100 books/series that are listed. (Does anyone else find that a strange coincidence?) Although, there are some stories that I read back in high school that are VERY vague.

message 129: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I've read 38!! Now, I'm not sure how they selected these books. Some are classics, some are just books that were hot. (I refuse to read the 50 Shades of Grey series or the Left Behind series.)

message 130: by Shelley (new)

Shelley Thanks for sharing! I've read 25, mostly the children's and young adult books. Several of the others are on my mental TBR list, afew I never plan to read. There are some others I should look into, as well.

message 131: by Kerri (new)

Kerri | 710 comments I’ve read 41/100! But like others here, there are books on it I will not read, and a lot of others on my TBR list.

hmm. I think 3 of us had 31. I wonder if we're close in age at all.

message 134: by Marcos (last edited Jun 02, 2018 06:41PM) (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Well, good question. Until the last time I looked, the June books were on the group's home page under "Upcoming".

They are The Bell Jar, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine and 1984.

The reading month started on June 1st.

Usually, by this time, the discussions for the books are open. My guess is our moderator, Kasey may have had some trouble that prevented her from publishing them.

I suggest we just start reading. She'll probably be back soon.

message 135: by Marcos (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Yes, it is missing from the website as well. I failed to mention that. :-)

But the rest of what I said is OK. Some more info that may help others, especially new members, in the meantime:

1. 1984 is the catch up read for June. The other two are new reads.

2. You can always know what are the BOTM by going to the "Polls" page (link on the top left hand side) and checking which are the winners of the latest poll.

3. The reading month always starts on the 1st.

message 136: by Kerri (new)

Kerri | 710 comments Also, for those using the app (like I usually do) there is a wonderful thread under the General discussion tab called “Helpful Links for Using the App or something...since I am on the app myself I cannot post the link, hahaha! But it is my lifesaver when reminding myself what’s coming up next or looking for the polls :)

I hope she is doing alright =)

message 141: by Marcos (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Zainab, I thought of doing that, but then I refrained. I think it is better to wait some days more. That is in respect to her and her work here in the group. I think she'll be back soon, there must have been something that delayed her.

message 142: by Marcos (last edited Jun 08, 2018 11:05AM) (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Discussion for "1984" is open

In the meantime, it is interesting to remind everyone, especially new members, that past discussion threads remain always open!

So, for the time being, both discussion threads for "1984" are still open and can be used by anyone reading this month "Bookshelf Catchup" choice, 1984!

message 145: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) Marco maybe you could help out? A second moderator might take some of the burden off her shoulders. You have done so much in this group. If Kasey is having a tough time we should help her.

message 146: by Marcos (last edited Jun 05, 2018 08:44AM) (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Renee, I've got other messages like your post. Actually, I've been helping in some tasks only as a volunteer collaborator. :-)

Yes, some groups have more than one moderator. The decision on the need and the establishing of other ones is usually of the group's founder or first moderator,

Two days ago, I sent Kasey a message offering to help, but I've got no answer yet. And she is still our only mod.

There is one or another action we could take, if need be, but I still feel it is a bit early to do that. Kasey's been a terrific work, I wouldn't like to be be too fast on assuming the need to making any changes.

Like I said, let's wait some more days and see what happens. :-)

message 147: by Marcos (last edited Jun 07, 2018 09:17AM) (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Edited: This post was written in reply to another one, which was then deleted by its author. It suggested contacting GR support which would then set a new moderator.
--------------------------------------

Yes, that's the solution that we should expect.

I've actually sent a message to one member of the GR support staff, explaining the situation and asking for guidance, so that, if such action becomes necessary, it is in compliance with GR policies and what else may be necessary.

I just preferred not to mention that before so as not to cause any concern, but since you are genuinely worried about the group, as others may be, I'm telling you now. :-)

If Kasey really doesn't come back soon, I'll start a discussion thread for letting everyone know about what is to be done (like starting provisional discussions for the June BOTM).

Then, in accordance to GR guidance, I'll take the necessary actions to keep the group going on in the short term.

However, I still think it is important to give Kasey a bit more time, or credit, or the benefit of the doubt. :-) And hope she's all right and coming back soon!

message 148: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) I agree with you Marco. Kasey has been amazing. I was just worried when Nancy took it on herself to post in the moderators group as well as opening the thread here. Kasey has not been gone long enough for her to have done that.

message 149: by Zeljka (new)

Zeljka | 470 comments Only suggestion: How about calling it pre-summer break (or whatever) and wait until the end of June? If nothing changes in the meanwhile, maybe during July we could start with regular activities for August and open threads for June/July BOTMs. (Of course, that is, if Marcos or someone is volunteering :-)
That would give respectable time for K to come back.

I hope all is well and it is a technology issue.

I started to read Eleanor Oliphant is competely fine and I couldn't remember which group was reading it. I'm only on page 50 but glad to hear others are reading it.
